Most surviving charters were written for monasteries, which had many properties and privileges and gained considerable expertise in preserving their charters.     Pre-Conquest laws and legislators in the twelfth century* Bruce O’Brien The early twelfth century has received much attention from English legal historians—mostly because the texts and manuscript copies of Anglo-Saxon lawcodes produced before c. 1125 have been seen as evidence both for pre-Conquest law and for the impact of the Norman Conquest on English law. The late twelfth century is conversely a neglected period in the history of Anglo- Saxon lawcodes, despite the large number of Latin, Anglo-French, and English texts created or copied between c. 1150 and c. 1200 which claim or were thought to represent the law in England before 1066. There are cogent reasons for this neglect. Scholars looking for records to show the consequences of the Conquest on law would say that they did not need to look beyond the evidence provided by the retrospective and present-minded creations of the post-Conquest period, and certainly not at the later copies of these same sources, except when these were needed to produce editions. Those interested in the developing common law of the late twelfth century would aver that they were interested in texts that were statements of contemporary law, and especially texts of Henry II’s assizes, the treatise known as Glanvill, charters, and fiscal and judicial rolls, which allowed them to study the stages of the careful crafting of the new system known to us as the common law. The later twelfth-century copies of Anglo-Saxon laws satisfy neither interest. They appear to be late memorials of pre-Conquest law and self-evidently disengaged from contemporary legal developments.

INTRODUCTION This paper is an attempt to reflect on the methodological approaches that I bring to ‘reading law’ in my current project on understandings of individual rights in the legal and theological texts of the twelfth- and early thirteenth-century Middle Ages, entitled ‘Sacred Rules, Secular Revelations: The Conceptions of Rights in Pre-Modern Europe’.1 It is first necessary to say something about my own intellectual background, which informs the methodologies that I employ in this research. I am an historian and lawyer. Following my undergraduate training in law and history, I worked as a lawyer in private and in-house roles off and on for more than five years. In one of these ‘off’ periods, I completed my PhD in the discipline of history, although the subject matter of my thesis dealt with legal history, intellectual history, history of law, and the history of ideas. For a time I taught medieval history in Australia and the United States. In a subsequent, but not contiguous, ‘off’ period, I published this PhD thesis as a monograph (Taliadoros 2006b).     Concealed Criticism: The Uses of History in Anglo­Norman Literature, 1130­1210 By William Ristow Submitted to The Faculty of Haverford College In partial fulfillment of the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in History 22 April, 2016 Readers: Professor Linda Gerstein Professor Darin Hayton Professor Andrew Friedman Abstract The twelfth century in western Europe was marked by tensions and negotiations between Church, aristocracy, and monarchies, each of which vied with the others for power and influence. At the same time, a developing literary culture discovered new ways to provide social commentary, including commentary on the power-negotiations among the ruling elite. This thesis examines the the functions of history in four works by authors writing in England and Normandy during the twelfth century to argue that historians used their work as commentary on the policies of Kings Stephen, Henry II, and John between 1130 and 1210. The four works, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, Master Wace’s Roman de Brut, John of Salisbury’s Policraticus, and Gerald of Wales’ Expugnatio Hibernica, each use descriptions of the past to criticize the monarchy by implying that the reigning king is not as good as rulers from history. Three of these works, the Historia, the Roman, and the Expugnatio, take the form of narrative histories of a variety of subjects both imaginary and within the author’s living memory, while the fourth, the Policraticus, is a guidebook for princes that uses historical examples to prove the truth of its points. By examining the way that the authors, despite the differences between their works, all use the past to condemn royal policies by implication, this thesis will argue that Anglo-Norman writers in the twelfth century found history-writing a means to criticize reigning kings without facing royal retribution.

Ted Evergates has been conversant with the extensive charters and administrative registers of Champagne since the days when computers were programmed with punch cards and his magisterial The Aristocracy in the County of Champagne, 1000–1300 contains many rich fruits of his research.[1] While specialists in medieval France rely on his well-annotated editions of cartularies, including two compiled during the tenure of Countess Blanche and replete with transactions between lay parties,[2] teachers and a new generation of medieval historians are indebted to his 1993 Feudal Society in Medieval France: Documents from the County of Champagne, the first anthology of French records published in English, and his 1997 examination of the “Duby thesis,”’ “The Feudal Imaginary of Georges Duby.”[3] In recent years Evergates has turned to biography, with his 2016 study of Count Henry the Liberal, and, in the book under review, Henry’s wife, Countess Marie of France, who outlived her husband by some seventeen years.[4] This biographical approach, in Evergates’s skilled hands, is to be welcomed not only by scholars, but also by students at all levels--and indeed by general readers or those whose main interests in women’s and social history lie in other times or places.

    Salisbury, Wiltshire: archaeology and history (notes for visitors, prepared by the Royal Archaeological institute, 2017) New Salisbury is the successor to Old Sarum (see separate on-line entry), resulting from the relocation of the cathedral to the more spacious and quieter site by the River Avon. There are five parts in these notes: Part 1 is on the cathedral itself, Part 2 on the surrounding Close, Part 3 on the city, Part 4 on recent research and Part 5 on the water-meadows. Part 1: Salisbury Cathedral The laying-out of a new cathedral close in the bishop’s manor of Milford was probably undertaken in the later 1190s under Bishop Herbert Poore (1194-1217). A rectangular area, surrounded by a wall, was first created for the consecrated ground of the churchyard, to contain the cathedral, cloister, chapter-house and cemetery. Because of the chaos of King John’s reign, no work was started on the cathedral until a Papal licence was given to Bishop Richard Poore (1217-28) on 29th March, 1218. Work on laying out the plan of the vast new cathedral (c. 475 feet long) and the digging of its foundations down to the gravel bed 5 feet below the ground surface was almost certainly started immediately, and on 28th April 1220 five or more main foundation stones were laid, possibly those with consecration crosses (photograph: Tatton-Brown and Crook 2014, 39; a brass cross would have been in the inset, and the stone painted). Work then continued rapidly on the eastern chapels, and they were consecrated on 28th September 1225.
