ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE AND REPRESENTATION IN THE WORKS OF ISHMAEL REED A thesis submitted to the faculty of San Francisco State University In partial fulfillment of Zo\% The requirements for IMl The Degree Master of Arts In English: Literature by Jason Andrew Jackl San Francisco, California May 2018 Copyright by Jason Andrew Jackl 2018 CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read Alternative Perspectives o f African American Culture and Representation in the Works o f Ishmael Reed by Jason Andrew Jackl, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Arts in English Literature at San Francisco State University. Geoffrey Grec/C Ph.D. Professor of English Sarita Cannon, Ph.D. Associate Professor of English ALTERNATIVE PERSPECTIVES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE AND REPRESENTATION IN THE WORKS OF ISHMAEL REED Jason Andrew JackI San Francisco, California 2018 This thesis demonstrates the ways in which Ishmael Reed proposes incisive countemarratives to the hegemonic master narratives that perpetuate degrading misportrayals of Afro American culture in the historical record and mainstream news and entertainment media of the United States. Many critics and readers have responded reductively to Reed’s work by hastily dismissing his proposals, thereby disallowing thoughtful critical engagement with Reed’s views as put forth in his fiction and non fiction writing. The study that follows asserts that Reed’s corpus deserves more thoughtful critical and public recognition than it has received thus far. To that end, I argue that a critical re-exploration of his fiction and non-fiction writing would yield profound contributions to the ongoing national dialogue on race relations in America.

  • Grzanka Dissertation
ABSTRACT Title of Document: WHITE GUILT: RACE, GENDER, SEXUALITY AND EMERGENT RACISMS IN THE CONTEMPORARY UNITED STATES Patrick Ryan Grzanka, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Associate Professor Sheri L. Parks, Department of American Studies White guilt is a culturally and historically contingent emotion rooted in White people’s recognition of unearned privileges and collective and/or individual roles in the perpetuation of racism. Situated within the context of neoliberal multiculturalism, this interdisciplinary dissertation investigates contemporary manifestations of White guilt in popular discourse and the lived experiences of young White adults in the United States. As a form of identity-based affect, White guilt may aid in the development of antiracist White people; however, because White guilt retains a focus on the White subject, it may offer limited potential to transform social relationships and systems of inequity. Three interrelated studies compose the methodological work of this project and undertake the task of empirically grounding White guilt so that we may better understand its forms, limits and consequences. The first study interrogates journalists’ coverage of three moments of controversy in the early 21st century: Anderson Cooper’s “emotional” reporting during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Don Imus-Rutgers University basketball scandal and Isaiah Washington’s firing from Grey’s Anatomy after allegedly calling a co-star a “faggot.” Reporting on these episodes illustrates how multiculturalism manages and defers racial guilt and shame while simultaneously eliding the intersections of identity that structure experience. The second study is the creation and initial validation of a survey-based measure of White guilt (the Test of White Guilt and Shame or “TOWGAS”), which attempts to reconcile several limitations of extant research on racial affect – namely, the persistent conflation of guilt and shame.

Newman Increasingly, public opinion shows Republican and Democratic presidential candidates are some of the most onerous in recorded history, and Americans want to see third-party options alongside them. Half of Americans use televised news to stay informed, but the two-party horserace leaves little room for the multiple candidates on the ballot.

  • Don Imus and the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team
Kennedy School of Government C15‐08‐1920.0 Case Program Crossing the Line: Don Imus and the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team On April 4, 2007, in the early minutes of his morning radio talk show, host Don Imus jokingly remarked on the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, which had lost a national college championship game the previous night. Picking up on a comment by his producer and longtime sidekick, Bernard McGuirk, who had described the Rutgers players as “some hard‐core hos,” Imus said, “That’s some nappy‐headed hos there.” The remark was, wrote public television host Gwen Ifill, “a shockingly concise sexual and racial insult”—a “ho” was, in street argot, a whore, and “nappy‐headed” a derogatory allusion to the texture of African‐American hair— “tossed out in a volley of male camaraderie by a group of amused, middle‐aged white men.” 1 This was by no means the first time Imus and the regulars on his show had inserted racial and sexual innuendo into their early morning banter. “Imus in the Morning” had long been, in the words of Newsweek, “a mix of the high‐minded and the profane,” 2 a show where serious conversations with prominent politicians and journalists alternated with what was often characterized as crass “locker‐room” humor. Over the years, Imus and his cohorts had directed gibes at homosexuals, blacks, Jews, and other ethnic minorities while poking fun at prominent figures in sports, entertainment, and politics. Occasionally, there was a public outcry over some of the more egregious insults, forcing Imus to defend himself against charges that he was a bigot; but eventually the uproar—which seldom made headlines—would die down, and Imus, whose popular four‐hour show was nationally syndicated through CBS Radio and simulcast on MSNBC‐ TV, ultimately emerged unscathed and unrepentant.

  • ANALYZING SELF-IDENTITY in MAINSTREAM HIP-HOP MUSIC and FILM to EMPOWER the HIP-HOP GENERATION for CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP1 Brandon Winstead, Ph.D
BREAK IT DOWN!: ANALYZING SELF-IDENTITY IN MAINSTREAM HIP-HOP MUSIC AND FILM TO EMPOWER THE HIP-HOP GENERATION FOR CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP1 Brandon Winstead, Ph.D. student Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary What’s da hook? An Introduction On April 4th, 2007, Don Imus, on his radio show Imus in the Morning, referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, which is comprised of two white and eight African American players, as “nappy headed-hos” immediately after the show’s executive producer, Bernard McGuirk called the team “hard core hos.”2 After these comments became public, reactions came from all different directions. Black activists and community leaders such as the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson called for Imus’ firing and demanded that he be suspended from the radio waves. Representatives from other organizations, radio stations, television networks, and magazines also asked for Imus to apologize and called on executives at MSNBC® and CBS® to cancel his broadcasts. Within two weeks, both CBS® and NBC Universal® terminated his employment. In the days between Imus’ remarks and his firing, figures in the media began to raise questions about racism and sexism in American society in general and in hip-hop music in particular. Fox New®, CBS®, NBC®, CNN®, and C-SPAN® brought in record executives, Hip-Hop artists, and African American cultural critics to discuss the relationship between hip- hop music and its promotion of violence and the denigration of black women. The discussion became so popular that even the producers of Oprah couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to debate about the relationship between hip-hop and misogyny.
