We are pleased to forward on to you a brief update from the High Sheriff View in browser of Hertfordshire, Will Hobhouse: A Night on Broadway a great success! Thank you so much to all of you who came, who donated, who supported, who contributed to the programme, who came to the after party, who helped on the evening and all those who advertised. The final tally is not quite ready but it looks as if we raised £10,000 for each charity we are supporting: that is £10,000 to London Musical Theatre Orchestra (LMTO), £10,000 to the St Albans Cathedral and £10,000 to the Hertfordshire Community Foundation for ‘pass through’ giving. What a great result – thank you! We have two further events to look forward to, both at the Cathedral; the Messiah on Saturday 15 July, and then the Justice Service on Sunday 5 November. Both of these will have programmes like at the Broadway concert. The reality of the fundraising is that it is the advertising and sponsorship that makes these work for fundraising. If anyone has a contact or business who might consider some sort of support please do let us know. The more the programme carries, the more that can be given to charity. Using very large orchestral forces, and conveying the composer’s feelings about the conflict with no sense of triumphalism, the two Symphonies display a confident use of unusual and evocative effects, such as the collage of fragments of the Brazilian national anthem and La Marseillaise in the ‘Battle’ movement of the Third Symphony. In this issue there are some important announcements about our categories of membership as well as items of news and general interest. IMPORTANT: On page 4 is a letter to all those currently receiving our communications, including Alban Notes, by post. Please give this letter your urgent attention. Failure to respond may result in our postal communications being discontinued. ECA Members’ News We welcome as new members Chris Price and Alexander (Bob) Hall. They were valedicted from the Cathedral Choir at Christmas 2013. Forthcoming events – Annual General Meeting Members will recall that the ECA has changed its accounting and reporting year to 31st March to give us more flexibility to hold our reunions and AGMs. A provisional time and date for this year’s AGM is Sunday 27th April at 12.15, venue to be advised with the formal AGM Notice – please put this date in your diary. Luccombe 2014 Following last year’s very enjoyable and successful camp at Luccombe a few members have asked whether there will be another camp this year. The committee is considering the weekend of 11th – 13th July but there need to be a number of changes in that we must have a “critical mass” if we are to camp in the field; we must also have a musical quorum if we are going to sing Evensong.
