The Forging of a White Gay Aesthetic at the Saint, 1980–84 Feature Article Tim Lawrence University of East London Abstract An influential private party for white gay men that opened in downtown New York in 1980 and closed in 1988, the Saint was a prolific employer of high-profile DJs, yet their work has gone largely unanalysed. This article describes and contextualises the aesthetic of these DJs, paying particular attention to the way they initially embraced music recorded by African American musicians, yet shifted to a notably “whiter” sound across 1982 and 1983, during which time new wave and Hi-NRG recordings were heard much more regularly at the spot. The piece argues that this shift took place as a result of a number of factors, including the introduction of a consumer ethos at the venue, the deepening influence of identity politics and the encroaching impact of AIDS, which decimated the venue’s membership. These developments led Saint DJs to place an ever-greater emphasis on the creation of a smooth and seamless aesthetic that enhanced the crowd’s embrace of a synchronized dancing style. DJs working in electronic dance music scenes would go on to adopt important elements of this approach. Martha Wash About Martha Wash has a voice that made millions dance. She is a two-time Grammy nominated American R&B, pop, soul, and house singer, record producer, songwriter, activist and music industry executive with a career spanning over thirty years. As one-half of the duo Two Tons O’ Fun – later the Weather Girls – she sang with the legendary Sylvester and recorded the enduring multi-platinum hit “It’s Raining Men.” Wash quickly rose to become the Queen of Clubland, with 13 songs peaking at Number One on the Billboard Dance charts. In the 1990s she spurred legislation that made vocal credits mandatory on CDs and music videos after being denied proper credit (and royalties) for C+C Music Factory’s anthem “Gonna Make You Sweat”, and Black Box’s “Strike It Up” and “Everybody, Everybody.” During this era Wash was the Midas of dance music, with eight songs featuring her vocals reaching Number One on the international pop/dance charts. Wash remains active as a touring and recording artist, and in 2015, she produced First Ladies Of Disco's Top 10 Billboard dance single "Show Some Love", which was released on her own label Purple Rose Records. He is the weak place of the popular religion—the vulnerable belly of the crocodile.1 (Percy Bysshe Shelley 1819) Tonight for the first time, at just about half past ten—for the first time in history—it’s gonna start raining men. (The Weather Girls 1982) N THE 1970S AND EARLY 1980S, AMERICAN DISCO CLUBS PROVED TO BE the vulnerable belly of the crocodile. New York City was in tur- Imoil at the onset of the 1970s. From 1966 to 1973, the city’s murder rate rose 173 percent. There was a growing bureaucracy and steadily decreasing social services. The city had a three billion dollar budget deficit by 1975. Gang violence and race agitation threatened middle-class whites who often expressed their fear by absconding to the suburbs. But others found a more esoteric form of escape. Disco was a function of ‘‘baroque indulgence’’ in the face of this overwhelming social and economic breakdown (Shapiro 4– 13). Indiscriminate sex, heavy drug use, dancing, and drinking all served as a form of motivated escapism—a sort of protest through studied nonchalance that girded its acolytes against the decay that grew around them.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com By the time Sylvester died on December 16, 1988 of AIDS-related complications, he had firmly cemented his reputation as one of the most original and talented musicians to come out of the disco arena. According to Anthony Lamar Rucker, while Sylvester represented to mainstream America the Black and gay cultural origins of disco music, his body of work included not only crucial contributions to the disco songbook, but also ballads that proved he was a versatile stylist who brought a realness and depth to all his material. Inspired himself by flamboyant musical icon Little Richard (Richard Penniman), Sylvester's own wild and outrageous personality influenced contemporaries such as Bette Midler and The Village People and paved the way for gender-bending performers such as Prince and RuPaul. In tandem with his brazenly showy onstage personality, however, Sylvester's unique voice and skilled musical arrangements bestowed a lasting quality on his work, which remains a seminal hallmark of disco and dance music. Sylvester was born Sylvester James into a middle-class family in Los Angeles, California, probably in 1946, though 1944 and 1947 are sometimes given. He was raised by his grandmother, blues singer Julia Morgan, who taught him to sing and exposed him to a wide variety of music, including blues, jazz, and gospel. At age eight he entered the gospel circuit and began building a career as a gospel singer, but as he entered adolescence he found it increasingly difficult to hide his burgeoning homosexuality.
