It seems fitting that I would develop a dissertation topic on suntanning in sunny Santa Barbara, where students literally live at the beach. While at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), I have had the fortunate experience of learning from and working with several remarkable individuals. First and foremost, my advisor Bruce Robertson has been a model for successfully pursuing both academic and curatorial endeavors, and his encyclopedic knowledge has always steered me in the right direction. Laurie Monahan, whose thoughtful persistence attracted me to UCSB and whose passion for art history and teaching students has been inspiring.

ADAM AND THE ANTS Adam and the Ants were formed in 1977 in London, England. They existed in two incarnations. One of which lasted from 1977 until 1982 known as The Ants. This was considered their Punk era. The second incarnation known as Adam and the Ants also featured Adam Ant on vocals, but the rest of the band changed quite frequently. This would mark their shift to new wave/post-punk. They would release ten studio albums and twenty-five singles. Their hits include Stand and Deliver, Antmusic, Antrap, Prince Charming, and Kings of the Wild Frontier. A large part of their identity was the uniform Adam Ant wore on stage that consisted of blue and gold material as well as his sophisticated and dramatic stage presence. Click the band name above. ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN Formed in Liverpool, England in 1978 post-punk/new wave band Echo and the Bunnymen consisted of Ian McCulloch (vocals, guitar), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums). They produced thirteen studio albums and thirty singles. Their debut album Crocodiles would make it to the top twenty list in the UK. Some of their hits include Killing Moon, Bring on the Dancing Horses, The Cutter, Rescue, Back of Love, and Lips Like Sugar. A very large part of their identity was silohuettes. Their music videos and album covers often included silohuettes of the band. They also have somewhat dark undertones to their music that are conveyed through the design. Click the band name above. • Paul Mccartney, 1980-1999
Paul McCartney from Wings through the 90's McCartney II Columbia FC‐36511 May 21, 1980 About ten years after recording McCartney by himself, Paul got several songs together and recorded them‐‐again alone‐‐on somewhat of a lark. Then Paul embarked on his ill‐fated 1980 tour of Japan (which resulted in his being jailed for drug possession). After returning to the safety of his own home, he was urged to release the album, and he did. The album contrasts well with McCartney, for this second production contains numerous instruments and electronic tricks that were not present on the 1970 release. Side One is particularly interesting. The solo version of "Coming Up" is followed by the fun track, "Temporary Secretary" (released as a single in England). The almost‐lament, "On the Way," is then succeeded by "Waterfalls," Paul's second (US) single from the album. "Bogey Music," from Side Two, is also a standout. John Lennon heard a song from McCartney II and thought that Paul sounded sad. When the album was released in the US, a bonus one‐sided single ‐‐ the hit version of "Coming Up"‐‐was included with the LP. This hit was enough to propel the album to the #3 position on the charts, during a time when disco was now on the wane. "Waterfalls" Columbia 1‐11335 Jul. 22, 1980 The lovely ballad about protectiveness was one of the standouts from McCartney II. After "Coming Up," it received the most airplay and the most positive response from Paul's friends. As a single, though, the song fared poorly, only reaching #83...one of Paul's worst showings to date.
