RLS is a neurological movement disorder characterized by throbbing, pulling, creeping, or other unpleasant sen- sations in the legs and an uncontrollable urge to move them. Symptoms occur primarily at night when a person is at rest and can increase in severity during the night. Moving the legs relieves the discomfort. The most distinctive aspect of the condition is that lying down and trying to relax activates the symptoms. Most people with RLS have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Left untreated, the condition causes exhaustion and daytime fatigue. Many people with RLS re- port that their activities of daily living are strongly affected as a result of their sleep deprivation. Restless Leg Syndrome is generally a lifelong condition for which there is no cure. Neverthe- less, current therapies can control the disorder, minimizing symptoms and increasing periods of restful sleep. Select Rehab Physical and Occupational Therapists can help manage the symptoms of RLS by creating a plan of care which includes: targeted exercises, walking, stretching, mas- saging the affected limb, or applying hot or cold packs. In addition, Select Rehab therapists can work with residents to treat impairments associated with the underlying condition such as diabe- tes and peripheral neuropathy. This can provide relief from RLS symptoms. Please join your Therapy Team at Chandler's Square in The Captain's Crossing on Monday, June 4th at 10:30am. June Educational Lecture Steve Goertz has been working for Cap- tionCall for almost five years and has in- stalled over 1900 captioning phones. He loves his job because it allows him to make a difference in the quality of people’s lives. CaptionCall allows people with hearing loss to understand phone conversations with its large cap- tion-enabled screen. It provides amplification and sound quality while displaying captions on a large, easy-to-read screen. He looks forward to demonstrating the CaptionCall phone and how you can get one at no cost for the phone, installation, training and the service. Sounds to good to be true? Come see for yourself on Friday, June 15th from 2:30pm -3:30pm in the Chandler’s Square dining room.
