1 SA Abortion to Birth Community Survey OCTOBER 2020 2 ACL SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY SURVEY NOTES The Australian Christian Lobby has surveyed over 1000 voters in State seats to gauge public support for attempts to change the laws in relation to abortion in the state of South Australia. The survey clearly shows that the parliament is acting without the support of the community. MPs who support this proposal are demonstrating how out of touch they are with their electorates and are at increased electoral risk. While the results differ depending on the electorate, there a number of key points that are broadly consistent… ●• In every seat MPs who support late term abortion are likely to lose a substantial number of votes. ●• Across the state, public opinion is overwhelmingly against late term abortion. ●• There is a massive level of support for banning gender selection abortions. ●• In every seat surveyed, there is greater than 50% support for criminalising bullying or coercing a woman to have an abortion. ●• There is NO community consensus on abortion in general. Results show that support ranges from a low of 48% to a maximum of 63%. The ACL is calling on all SA MPs to act in accordance with community expectations and oppose Abortion to Birth. A full copy of the community survey has been sent to all MPs and has been posted on the ACL website. 3 ADELAIDE Rachel Sanderson MP LIBERAL PARTY 291 COMPLETED SURVEYS 61.5% 72.9% less likely to vote for of Liberal voters less likely to an MP who supports support an MP in favour of late term abortion late term abortion AGAINST LATE 58% TERM ABORTION FOR ABORTION 17.1% UP TO BIRTH FOR CRIMINALISING 51.1% ABORTION COERCION AGAINST ABORTION BECAUSE OF 87.6% GENDER SELECTION 63.2% 24.7% GENERALLY GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE UNSUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION OF ABORTION 4 ENFIELD Andrea Michaels MP AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY 203 COMPLETED SURVEYS 69.9% 69.6% less likely to vote for of Labor voters less likely to an MP who supports support an MP in favour of late term abortion late term abortion AGAINST LATE 67% TERM ABORTION FOR ABORTION 9.8% UP TO BIRTH FOR CRIMINALISING 51.1% ABORTION COERCION AGAINST ABORTION BECAUSE OF 79.3% GENDER SELECTION 58.6% 28.5% GENERALLY GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE UNSUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION OF ABORTION 5 FROME Geoffrey Brock MP INDEPENDENT 187 COMPLETED SURVEYS 74.8% 50% less likely to vote for of Independent voters less likely an MP who supports to support an MP in favour of late term abortion late term abortion AGAINST LATE 65.7% TERM ABORTION FOR ABORTION 8.5% UP TO BIRTH FOR CRIMINALISING 63.8% ABORTION COERCION AGAINST ABORTION BECAUSE OF 87.7% GENDER SELECTION 48.6% 36.3% GENERALLY GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE UNSUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION OF ABORTION 6 LEE Stephen Mullighan MP AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY 234 COMPLETED SURVEYS 72.6% 66.2% less likely to vote for of Labor voters less likely to an MP who supports support an MP in favour of late term abortion late term abortion AGAINST LATE 67% TERM ABORTION FOR ABORTION 11.9% UP TO BIRTH FOR CRIMINALISING 52.9% ABORTION COERCION AGAINST ABORTION BECAUSE OF 81.1% GENDER SELECTION 54.2% 29.4% GENERALLY GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE UNSUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION OF ABORTION 7 NEWLAND Richard Harvey MP LIBERAL PARTY 225 COMPLETED SURVEYS 78.2% 78.4% less likely to vote for of Liberal voters less likely to an MP who supports support an MP in favour of late term abortion late term abortion AGAINST LATE 70.6% TERM ABORTION FOR ABORTION 9.7% UP TO BIRTH FOR CRIMINALISING 55.7% ABORTION COERCION AGAINST ABORTION BECAUSE OF 82.2% GENDER SELECTION 48.8% 32.4% GENERALLY GENERALLY SUPPORTIVE UNSUPPORTIVE OF ABORTION OF ABORTION 8 The South Australian Parliament has started to debate changes to abortion laws, and we’d like to get your opinions.
