  • Foundations for Music-Based Games
Die approbierte Originalversion dieser Diplom-/Masterarbeit ist an der Hauptbibliothek der Technischen Universität Wien aufgestellt (http://www.ub.tuwien.ac.at). The approved original version of this diploma or master thesis is available at the main library of the Vienna University of Technology (http://www.ub.tuwien.ac.at/englweb/). MASTERARBEIT Foundations for Music-Based Games Ausgeführt am Institut für Gestaltungs- und Wirkungsforschung der Technischen Universität Wien unter der Anleitung von Ao.Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Peter Purgathofer und Univ.Ass. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Martin Pichlmair durch Marc-Oliver Marschner Arndtstrasse 60/5a, A-1120 WIEN 01.02.2008 Abstract The goal of this document is to establish a foundation for the creation of music-based computer and video games. The first part is intended to give an overview of sound in video and computer games. It starts with a summary of the history of game sound, beginning with the arguably first documented game, Tennis for Two, and leading up to current developments in the field. Next I present a short introduction to audio, including descriptions of the basic properties of sound waves, as well as of the special characteristics of digital audio. I continue with a presentation of the possibilities of storing digital audio and a summary of the methods used to play back sound with an emphasis on the recreation of realistic environments and the positioning of sound sources in three dimensional space. The chapter is concluded with an overview of possible categorizations of game audio including a method to differentiate between music-based games.

  • Understanding Visual Interfaces for the Next Generation of Dance-Based Rhythm Video Games
Understanding Visual Interfaces for the Next Generation of Dance-Based Rhythm Video Games Emiko Charbonneau∗ Andrew Miller† Chadwick Wingrave‡ Joseph J. LaViola Jr.§ University of Central Florida Abstract We present an experimental study exploring how to best guide users when playing RealDance, a next generation dancing game proto- type. It uses four Nintendo Wii remotes, attached to the wrists and ankles, to create a 3D spatial interface utilizing the entire body to more closely mimic real dancing. Since RealDance requires a player to use both arms and legs, the player needs to know which of their four limbs to use, where they are expected to move, and when they are expected to move in the dance sequence. To understand the best way to present this information, we implemented three visual interface methods: Timeline, Motion Lines, and Beat Circles, that are based on existing rhythm video games but extended to support RealDance’s 3D interaction requirements. Our study explores each visual interface’s effectiveness in convey- ing dance sequence information and assisting the player in pro- viding a rewarding experience. Our evaluation is based on points scored in the game, and post-questionnaires used to solicit reac- tions about each visual interface including which was preferred and why. The results of the study show that players had significantly Figure 1: The RealDance system in action. The Motion Lines in- higher scores when using Motion Lines and Beat Circles than with terface is pictured. the Timeline. The results also indicate that players found Motion Lines and Beat Circles significantly easier to follow than Timeline and icon position significantly less confusing than the Timeline in- to the novelty of increased physical exertion in the case of Dance terface.

  • Infinite Lives Canonvorming Bij Videogames
Infinite Lives Canonvorming bij videogames Bjorn Schrijen (S4134281) Masterscriptie Letterkunde Onder begeleiding van prof. dr. Jos Joosten en dr. Martijn Stevens 2015 Abstract As with most other forms of culture, an implicit canon exists for video games. Though most players and video game scholars will have a general idea about which titles constitute this canon, there has been no academic research yet about the exact contents of it, or – more importantly – about the processes that lead to canonization. This knowledge could however be very interesting, as it would not only give insight in the way the game industry works, but possibly also in processes of canon formation for other media. This thesis therefore tries to gain insight in the way an implicit video game canon is formed. In order to do this, the game industry is observed from a theoretical framework based on the works of Pierre Bourdieu. Canonical games are defined as games that retain a high amount of both symbolic and economic capital over a long time, and the different parties within the game industry are seen as actors that can allocate these forms of capital to specific games. By systematically studying the different actors and existing writings about them, several hypotheses are drawn about the influence of each actor on canonization. These hypotheses are then tested using a dataset containing 77 games that can be considered canonical. This set was created by combining ten very diverse lists with the best 100 games ever made. As most of these lists are already the result of multiple people’s votes, and only the games are selected that appear in a majority of the lists, this dataset gives a fairly good impression of the implicit game canon.
