The Thai authorities estimate that at least 8,150 are likely to have died. The first location where the tsunami was noticed was on the Similan Islands, a famous diving site located about 70 km from Phang Nga town in Pha Nga province or 13 km from central Khao Lak. The sea around these islands when the tsunami struck was reported to have strong currents and divers underwater felt as though they were in a washing machine. Some flooding also occurred inland, though no casualties were reported. The popular tourist resort of Phuket was badly hit. Some 250 people were reported dead, including tourists. The tsunami struck the west coast of Phuket island, flooding and causing damage to almost all the major beaches such as Patong, Karon, Kamala, and Kata beach. The smaller but increasingly popular resort area of Khao Lak some 80 km north of Phuket was hit far worse with 3,950 confirmed deaths, however, the death toll in Khao Lak may have exceeded 4,500. The severity of the situation in Khao Lak is probably explained by the fact, that unlike the high-rise hotels of Phuket, the village of Khao Lak only had low built bungalows instead of high-rise concrete hotels. There was no warning of the first wave so people had no idea it was coming. These days, Thailand is better prepared for tsunamis as they are 2 hours away from being hit again if there is a new tsunami. Khao Lak also has an extensive area of flatland only a few meters above the sea level, on which most bungalows were situated. Khao Lak experienced the highest run-up of any tsunami wave height of any location outside Sumatra. Due to the topography of the seabed, coastline and reefs offshore, the tsunami waves piled on top of themselves and in doing so, create the infamous ' disappearing sea effect ' which enticed many tourists to their deaths. This effect is also known as the tsunami drawback. Bhumi Jensen, grandson of Bhumibol Adulyadej ( HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej ) was among those killed in Khao Lak. Hundreds of holiday tourists on the Phi Phi Islands were washed out to sea. Tuk-tuk drivers were quick to offer assistance, driving victims to hospitals, higher grounds and away from the surging waters. The nearby Ko Lanta Yai, however, wasn't afflicted as badly. At some places in Phuket and Phang Nga provinces, elephants were used to move and lift heavy wreckage to search for victims and to clear roads. These included six male Indian elephants which had previously been used in making the movie Alexander. On a beach in Thailand, a man was leading an elephant to entertain tourists, when the tsunami came. The elephant's natural instinct to flee the sea saved the life of a young girl who was upon his back. Background History Camillian Social Center Takuapa is the non-profit organization providing care and rehabilitation for the children living with disabilities under the St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand. The organization which is run by the catholic priest (Camillian religious order) provides treatment program for free without charge with holistic approach, physical, mental, social and spiritual dimensions to the children living with disabilities in the tsunami affected area of Takuapa district in Phang-nga province. On December 26, 2004, Tsunami hit the western coastal line of Thailand on Andaman Sea and it claimed the lives of about 5,000 people, causing damage on properties, houses’ livelihood and psychological of the victims. Takuapa district and Khao Lak were hardest hit by the tidal waves. St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand the non-profit organization was one of the first to help the victims. The St. Camillus Foundation of Thailand decided to make a three years project to help these populations. The project included a dispensary with the constant presence of General Nurses, scholarship for more than 200 children and a monthly mobile clinic with doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, psychologists in order to reach the distant islands and villages damaged by the tsunami. During these outing we came to know the necessity of the people and we could help in many aspects: we built schools, gave boat to the fisherman. Houses to the homeless, After the emergency was over we wanted to stay in the area, above all for Burmese refugees and HIV positive, AIDS afflicted. We make an office for these necessities. CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES. Taking care of these people we came to know the necessity of children living with disabilities and we started a day-care center for them and now our presence it is constant in the area. The Camillian set up this center called “Camillian Social Center Takuapa (the name of the district) to give a better quality of life to disabled children. Almost all the other organizations left, but we still remain in the area, because always there is needy for disable. Reason for COMING TO THE PROJECT Project We, Camillian Social Center Takuapa, have agreed upon the project after discussing in the meeting. This is the new project which can encourage the interested neighbouring communities to start Sufficiency Economy and also develop the skills for children disabled such as Dream Coffee, the banquet of a catfish in concrete ponds, the banquet of a frog in concrete ponds , The project is to raise and sell chicken eggs, eggs, frogs, fishes and lime that grow in concrete containers. Children and young people with disabilities living here, along with the staff, will work in the project for their own advantage in learning and to have the possibilities to do something when they will leave the centre. Project Goals Any project with children and even more with children with disabilities can’t be out sufficient; but it is indispensable to try to reduce the expenses, otherwise they should depend always from others. And to reduce the expenses is the major goal of this project. In one year time we will have already a benefit from this project. When the project will work completely we hope to reduce the expenses half of the precent necessities. Another important goal will be the involvement of the disable in the work, They will be in charge, under the supervision of the take care personal, for many aspect: like to feed the chicken, the fish… to clean, to water the lemon trees.
