Dando risposta affermativa pretendiamo di essere una identità (i sardi) capace di esprimere una propria visione del mondo, sia pure in lingua importata. Niente di cui scandalizzarsi, il bulgaro ebreo Elias Canetti ha scritto in tedesco i suoi capolavori, intere etnie della Mitteleuropa hanno adottato a causa di svariate vicende storiche il tedesco come lingua di comunicazione letteraria, gli afroamericani di Martinica e Guadalupe esprimono l’identità creola in un francese che arricchisce, modifica e mette in crisi i dizionari d’oltralpe. Pur non focalizzandosi su questioni di tipo linguistico, questo percorso di ricerca è nato, un po’ come una sfida, a partire da una domanda analoga a quella proposta da Atzeni: si può parlare di una letteratura del Queensland? E, conseguentemente, di altri ulteriori quesiti: in che modo tale letteratura dà voce alla presunta identità “ Queenslander ” e alla sua cultura? E’ possibile parlare di una specificità, di una ricorrenza di tematiche o di altri fattori relativamente a un corpus di testi prodotti in quella determinata area? In che modo essi ne definiscono le peculiarità? Oggi una risposta a queste domande può forse trovarsi nel volume di recente pubblicazione By the Book: A Literary History of Queensland , edito dalla UQP; il volume in questione non è semplicemente una prova ovvia della possibilità di un discorso sulla letteratura del Queensland ma, come sua ‘storicizzazione’, anche del lavoro di ricerca che per anni è stato svolto a livello locale intorno all’argomento, a partire dal pieno del dibatto regionalista in ambito australiano, negli anni ottanta, sino a oggi. Alla base della presente ricerca vi è innanzitutto un’attenzione per lo spazio fisico, per un’area geografica ben definita: lo stato australiano del Queensland; il che non preclude però tutta una serie di implicazioni connesse all’aspetto meramente geografico del suddetto spazio, siano esse di tipo storico, culturale, politico, sociale o psicologico, poiché le stesse vanno di pari passo. Spazi e luoghi sono infatti, sotto molti punti di vista, fattori di primaria importanza nella nostra esistenza poiché, agendo a livello individuale, sociale e culturale, determinano, almeno in parte, la nostra identità. Una iii prima tappa di questo lavoro è dunque legata, prima ancora che al suo specifico oggetto, il Queensland, allo spazio come oggetto del discorso critico-filosofico o, più in generale, alle teorie che da prospettive disciplinari differenti investono i concetti relativi a spazio e luogo. Ciò sia in ragione di quanto appena detto sulla preminenza dello spazio nella nostra esistenza e del suo contributo alla costruzione della nostra identità, sia perché tali discipline sono oggi considerate a pieno titolo dei possibili strumenti di analisi letteraria, per cui, facendovi riferimento, è possibile costruire delle ‘griglie’ metodologiche di partenza. Inoltre, come studio letterario, l’interesse di questa indagine è rivolto anche alle possibili implicazioni che spazio e luogo comportano in un testo narrativo, estrapolate più da altri studi analoghi, come spunti di riflessione e di confronto, che da teorie in senso stretto: l’idea di fondo che ne deriva è che in qualche modo i luoghi producano inevitabilmente le ‘proprie’ storie, esattamente come luoghi diversi suscitano ognuno un proprio ‘ sense of place ’. L’idea di un senso di appartenenza a un luogo o uno spazio che si percepisce come ‘il proprio’ è da considerarsi, per così dire, relativa in ambiti come quello australiano, in cui all’origine del presente assetto demografico e culturale vi è il processo storico della colonizzazione. In tempi recenti, e soprattutto dopo la sentenza Mabo del 1992, pare vi sia maggiore attenzione da parte degli australiani alla questione aborigena, maggiore consapevolezza del danno loro arrecato con l’insediamento coloniale e quanto si è verificato in seguito ad esso, maggiore impegno per una riconciliazione. La politica del nuovo governo di Kevin Rudd sembra fortemente orientata in questo senso, e già poco dopo il suo insediamento dopo il lungo governo Howard ha compiuto un importante passo con le scuse formali alle popolazioni aborigene per quanto commesso nel corso del Novecento nei confronti delle stolen generations e delle loro famiglie d’origine. Rispetto a tutto ciò è dunque opportuno chiedersi in che modo oggi gli australiani considerino il proprio senso di appartenenza, il proprio legame con il territorio, così come è doveroso premettere che questi debbano necessariamente essere negoziati con gli originari abitanti australiani; ciò a sua volta richiede che le idee di matrice europea connesse allo spazio nel suo senso fisico e territoriale, prima fra tutte l’ossessione per la proprietà, vengano rimesse in discussione. Il discorso teorico sullo spazio viene quindi qui contestualizzato nell’ambito australiano e, più specificamente, postcoloniale, un ambito in cui lo spazio – violato, sottratto, trasformato – ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale da un punto di vista storico, e in cui nuove considerazioni in merito a iv questo concetto rappresentano oggi il presupposto attraverso il quale può verificarsi quella negoziazione indispensabile per una rispettosa convivenza. Parlare di senso locale, appartenenza e identità significa, in un certo senso, parlare in termini ‘regionalisti’, ovvero riferirsi a una dimensione spaziale circoscritta, presupponendo cioè che laddove vi sia un forte senso della propria identità culturale, di differenziazione rispetto al ‘resto’, esso sia marcatamente locale e non coinvolga un’area di grandi proporzioni, ma un’area che a livello concettuale possa essere considerata nella sua interezza. In altre parole, questa presupposizione si basa sul fatto che esistano delle differenze tra le realtà minori all’interno di un contesto più ampio che viene generalmente considerato uniforme, come ad esempio quello nazionale. In quest’ottica dunque il regionalismo dà voce a quelle realtà minori di cui la ‘totalità’ non tiene conto. Nel caso australiano, per via degli aspetti storici e geografici, parlare in questi termini è particolarmente appropriato: storicamente si è infatti sempre percepito un senso di frazionamento tra le ex-colonie, a dispetto della loro contiguità spaziale, e le differenze di tipo fisico costituiscono un ulteriore fattore di difformità tra le stesse. L’idea di regionalismo può forse apparire obsoleta o incongrua rispetto alla realtà odierna, come un concetto chiuso in se stesso, che non si apre cioè a contaminazioni di sorta, ma di fatto qui viene inteso anche nel suo potenziale di flessibilità e continua ridefinizione. E’ anche per questa ragione che il Queensland, un’area geografica vasta migliaia di chilometri, viene qui concepita come una stratificazione di realtà regionali, le quali possono mutare, sovrapporsi, arricchirsi, piuttosto che come una regione univoca. Lungi dal considerare i confini geografici e politico-amministrativi si è dunque scelto di privilegiare i confini mentali, immortalando due realtà regionali letterariamente significative all’interno del più ampio contesto del Queensland. La prima di queste due realtà è quella della costa tropicale del nord, vera e propria protagonista dell’opera di Thea Astley, in cui l’idea del confine mentale tra Northeners e Southeners è fortemente enfatizzata e i tropici vengono rappresentati come una realtà a sé stante.     The Genesis of Thea Astley’s The Multiple Effects of Rainshadow CHERYL TAYLOR JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY My purpose in this essay, which extends a project commenced a decade ago (Taylor 2009), is to analyse the sources of Thea Astley’s The Multiple Effects of Rainshadow, including but going beyond the list provided in the author’s ‘Acknowledgments.’ In truth, Astley’s achievement in Multiple Effects as in her other fiction far surpasses the sum of contributions that she derived from earlier writings. The mostly forgotten books that she lists as ‘[i]mpulses’ and her bequest to the Fryer Library of her newspaper sources and hand-written notes suggest that she may have welcomed a study of this novel’s genesis. The essay begins with an overview of the place of Multiple Effects in Astley’s oeuvre and the literary and political contexts for Astley’s increasing engagement with the history of Aboriginal dispossession. It then turns in detail to the novel itself and offers an excavation of the sources that inform its historical narrative. In doing this I hope to demonstrate something about Astley’s creative process: the extent and detail of her research, the ways in which her novel creatively reworks this archive, and some of the effects of that on the kind of history that Astley tells. Following the publication in 1994 of Coda, intended as the title indicates to be Astley’s last novel, the Keating Labor government awarded her a five-year Creative Fellowship of $325,000. Thus encouraged, after ‘one year of musing and two years of writing’ (Sayer 18) at Cambewarra on the NSW south coast, Astley published Multiple Effects in August 1996.

    Introduction: The work of Thea Astley Susan Sheridan sue.sheridan@flinders.edu.au I am honoured and delighted to have been invited, along with Associate Professor Jessica Gildersleeve, to edit this special issue of Queensland Review on the work of Thea Astley. I owe Jessica heartfelt thanks for her hard work and easy collegiality. Fifteen years since Astley’s death, the appearance of this collection of essays marks the development of a growing body of biographical and critical studies of her work. The essays complement Karen Lamb’s 2015 biography, Inventing Her Own Weather, and my critical monograph, The Fiction of Thea Astley (2016), as well as the collection of essays edited by myself and Paul Genoni, Thea Astley’s Fictional Worlds (2006). Most recently, Thea Astley: Selected Poems appeared in 2017, edited by Cheryl Taylor (who has an essay in this issue) and published by the University of Queensland Press (Astley’s publisher for many years). Most of Astley’s novels and story collections are in print, and they are being read in new ways, with new eyes and in new contexts. Text Publishing has brought out reprints of four of the novels in its Classics series, with introductions by novelists of today. Kate Grenville on AKindnessCup(1974) emphasises Astley’s pioneering role as a historical novelist, particularly her capacity for ‘saying the unsayable’ about the violence of colonialism. Chloe Hooper, intro- ducing The Multiple Effects of Rainshadow (1996), draws attention to the parallels between the account of the death of Cameron Doomadgee on Palm Island in 2005, which she covered in her book The Tall Man (2008), and Astley’s novel based on a massacre on the island in 1930 and its long-term after-effects.
