Tributes have been paid to former Barnton Manager Terry Murphy, a much loved friend who sadly passed away suddenly last Saturday. Terry had been taking part in the weekly Parkrun in Carey Park, Northwich – something he had enjoyed doing almost every week since it began. An absolute legend in local football circles, he was also passionate about the town he lived in and served the Winnington & Castle ward on Northwich Town Council. Terry is survived by his loving family of wife Anne, children Debbie and Lee, and four grandchildren.

Born in Liverpool on 14th January 1940, Terry later moved to Cheshire and began work at Saturday 2nd December 1961 ICI shortly after leaving school. He was playing for the works football team when he joined Football League Division Four Mid-Cheshire League side Knutsford, and was just 17-years-old when he scored twice on his Gresty Road, Crewe Crewe Alexandra 1-1 Chester debut as an inside-left in a 6-1 win at Wilmslow Albion in April 1957. Riley 12 Hennin 80 Brian Williamson 1 John Hardie His potential was noted by Stockport County, where he spent a short spell before returning Jimmy McGill 2 Ron Hughes to Knutsford for the 1958-59 season. In 1960 he joined Northwich Victoria, then in the Don Campbell 3 Fred Donaldson Cheshire County League, before signing as a professional with Crewe Alexandra a year later. Stan Keery 4 Derek Hennin He was given his senior debut by boss Jimmy McGuigan in the no.6 shirt in a 1-1 draw with Eric Barnes 5 Ray Gill Chester at Gresty Road in the Football League Fourth Division on 2nd December 1961 (see Terry Murphy 6 Malcolm Edwards match details, right). He returned to the Cheshire League to play for Witton Albion, before Billy Haydock 7 Peter Fitzgerald Chris Riley 8 David Cartlidge later excelling in a long career coaching and managing. Locally, Terry won the Mid-Cheshire Frank Lord 9 Fred Morris Sunday League title in his first nine years in management with three different clubs: Broken Barrie Wheatley 10 Billy White Cross, The Railway (where he even won four trophies in one season) and Greenbank. Jim Pennington 11 Mervyn Jones In the Cheshire League he coached and managed Rhyl, before moving to Runcorn as trusted assistant to close friend John Williams in 1980. The pair formed a formidable partnership as their team won the Northern by a 16-point margin (in the days of two points for a win) in 1981, before later completing a treble with the NPL Cup and NPL Shield. They topped this the following year by leading Runcorn to the Alliance Premier League title at the first attempt, the height of the original club’s achievements. He later had a spell with Williams at Altrincham in 1987-88. Terry also took charge at what were mid-Cheshire’s big three semi-professional clubs during his career, namely Northwich Victoria, Witton Albion and Winsford United, as well as the three main Mid-Cheshire League clubs in Barnton, Lostock Gralam and Middlewich Town. Here at Townfield Lane, Terry began Barnton’s run of seven consecutive league titles in 1996-97, a trophy haul that included a treble in 1997-98. He later won three league titles and eight cups in seven years at Middlewich Town, and his son Lee proudly played under him for both clubs in those successful spells. Terry had been Director of Football at Witton, and the club continued to use his exceptional scouting abilities at Wincham Park. Terry was always a great ambassador for football, particularly in the local area, and supported the idea of the creation of fans- owned 1874 Northwich. He was a regular at games of his former clubs, and retained an encyclopaedic knowledge of players and current form throughout several levels of the non-league game. It would be safe to say that he knew the vast majority, if not all, of the players who have come through the local ranks. Terry remained a regular and welcome visitor to Barnton, where we would all love to see him and listen to him talk about the game he loved. One of the last competitive games he attended at Townfield was back in May when he watched his grandson Alex play for Davenham as they won the Mid-Cheshire Youth Cup. Barnton Chairman Steve Lloyd summed up Terry’s influence: “Let’s be honest, for all us wannabe managers within the Mid-Cheshire area, Terry Murphy was the one we all looked up to, the one we wanted to replicate. This man was a benchmark, a true local football phenomenon, I am absolutely devastated at his passing.”

Our Head of Football, Mike Alcock, played for Terry for many years, and was also his right-hand man with several successful teams. Above all, the two struck up an enduring close friendship, so it is appropriate that we should leave the last words to Mike: "I can't put into words how I felt when I got the news Terry had passed away. Barnton won't feel the same not having him up there anymore, the tributes and lovely messages just go to show what he meant to everyone. It's a very sad time but he will never be forgotten. The memories, the stories, the laughs. It was an honour to work with you in football and to be your friend. RIP Mate" WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS

Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester & District Sunday Football League in their Under-16s Division. As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later. In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire FA Cups. Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium itself has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. Lining up for United that evening were future Premier League and international strikers Jovan Kirovski and Jonathan Macken. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle Town on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendary foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. Cheadle Town are an FA Charter Standard Community Club acknowledging the most advanced level of club development and football provision. At the turn of the year in 2018 a new future for the club was heralded when it became part of the Little Sports Group, owned by ex-Cheadle Town player Craig Brennan. In May 2018 the club were awarded a £50,000 improvement bursary from Buildbase that will enable them to realise their vision to improve the matchday experience and develop footballing facilities for the surrounding area. 2019/20 FIXTURES, All fixtures are North West Counties League First Division South matches unless stated Date H/A Opponents Score Crowd 1 2 3 4 5 6 03.08 A Ellesmere Rangers 3-0 68 Lyons Botell^ Stafford Ikusemori Ford Worsley 06.08 A Vauxhall Motors 0-4 102 Lyons* Botell^ Stafford Ikusemori< Ford Worsley 10.08 H Wythenshawe Town 2-1 51 Lyons Richards^ Crofts Ikusemori< Ford Rizzotti 17.08 H Cheadle Heath Nomads 0-2 54 Lyons Richards Crofts Ikusemori Ford Rizzotti 20.08 A Wythenshawe Amateurs 0-3 142 Lyons Botell Crofts* Dwyer R Ford Rizzotti 23.08 H Cheadle Town 19:45 Fri* 26.08 H West Didsbury & Chorlton 15:00 Mon 10.09 A Abbey Hey 19:45 Tue 14.09 A St. Martins 15:00 Sat 21.09 H Abbey Hulton United 15:00 Sat 28.09 A FC Oswestry Town 15:00 Sat 05.10 H Abbey Hey/Bacup B (1DC:2) 15:00 Sat 12.10 H Alsager Town 15:00 Sat 19.10 A Rylands (MLC:1) 15:00 Sat 26.10 A Sandbach United 15:00 Sat 02.11 H Eccleshall 15:00 Sat 09.11 A Stone Old Alleynians 15:00 Sat 16.11 H Cammell Laird 1907 15:00 Sat 23.11 H Abbey Hey 15:00 Sat 30.11 A Maine Road 15:00 Sat 07.12 H Sandbach United 15:00 Sat 14.12 A Wythenshawe Town 15:00 Sat 21.12 H Ellesmere Rangers 15:00 Sat 26.12 H Stockport Town 15:00 Thu 28.12 A Cammell Laird 1907 15:00 Sat 04.01 A New Mills 15:00 Sat 11.01 H Stone Old Alleynians 15:00 Sat 25.01 H Maine Road 15:00 Sat 01.02 A Cheadle Heath Nomads 15:00 Sat 08.02 H St. Martins 15:00 Sat 15.02 A Alsager Town 15:00 Sat 29.02 A West Didsbury & Chorlton 15:00 Sat 07.03 H Vauxhall Motors 15:00 Sat 14.03 A Abbey Hulton United 15:00 Sat 21.03 H FC Oswestry Town 15:00 Sat 04.04 A Eccleshall 15:00 Sat 11.04 H Wythenshawe Amateurs 15:00 Sat 13.04 A Stockport Town 15:00 Mon 18.04 A Cheadle Town 15:00 Sat 25.04 H New Mills 15:00 Sat TBA H Vauxhall Motors (CSC:1) TBA H Winsford United (MCSC:QF)

They played in that league (renamed the Cheshire Association Football League in 2007) until 2014, and at that time were one of only two clubs to have been in the league throughout its 66-year history, the other being Knutsford. Barnton won the league on eleven occasions, including seven consecutive league titles between 1996–97 and 2002–03; a run began under the leadership of the legendary Terry Murphy. The pinnacle of the club’s success came with winning the National League Systems Cup while representing the Mid-Cheshire League in the inaugural competition of 2003–04. They beat West Cheshire, Liverpool Combination and South Western League opposition along the way before defeating the Cambridgeshire County League 2–0 on their home soil in the final. As a result of this they went on to represent England in the UEFA Regions Cup in Slovenia and Bosnia where they won four, drew one and lost one of their games, narrowly failing to reach the final stages of the competition.

The club submitted an application to join the North West Counties Football League for the start of the 2014–15 season. They were successful in their application and their place in the newly formed Division One was confirmed on 29 May. A few days later, Andy Burgess was appointed as the club’s new manager, with Ian Ross stepping down to concentrate on his role as chairman. However, Burgess left the club by mutual consent in November and forward Colin Quirk was placed in temporary charge. Within a week Allan Glover was appointed as the new manager, but he was succeeded by Leon Knight in March 2015. The club finished seventh in their inaugural season in the North West Counties Football League, just outside the Division One Play-Off places.

During Barnton’s second season in the First Division, the club accepted Leon Knight’s resignation as manager in early March, and appointed Danny Meadowcroft as interim manager until the end of the season. The team then went on to lift the Reusch First Division Cup and also gained promotion to the North West Counties League Premier Division by beating Bacup Borough in the Division One Play-Off Final. The club then said goodbye to Ian Ross who stepped down as Barnton chairman after four years, and the management team also moved on to pastures new.

In May 2016, Steve Lloyd and Mike Alcock took over as Barnton’s new management team, with Tim Burton as the new chairman. After a promising start to the campaign, the team then picked up just one point from twelve matches to find themselves firmly in the bottom three. However, some quality additions to the squad in autumn sparked a revival, and the Villagers ended 2016/17 comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

Despite picking up points from some hard-earned drawn games early in 2017/18, Barnton had to wait until November for their first league win, which came away at West Didsbury & Chorlton. Unsurprisingly, the team were firmly ensconced in the relegation places for the remainder of the campaign, with the second win only arriving at fellow strugglers AFC Darwen in March. The inevitable demotion was confirmed shortly afterwards, although the team did manage to win a further two games once the pressure was off to eventually finish second bottom.

In 2018/19 Barnton finished in 12th position in the newly-created First Division South of the North West Counties League, and under a new management team. Steve Lloyd moved up to become chairman, with Mike Alcock joining him on the senior committee. James McShane took over the reins as player-manager, ably assisted by Garry Moore, Liam Page and Adam Judge.
