This 2012 original guide is the product of a strenuous, two-year effort led by a group of medical professionals, social researchers and theologians who reviewed hundreds of research documents, and consulted with over one thousand informants. This manual has been tested and accepted among renowned Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) scholars selected by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission (EOTC-DICAC). These esteemed scholars recognize this material as scientifically correct, theologically sound and culturally acceptable. We would like to thank the Nike Foundation for its financial assistance and contributions to CIFA. We encourage free use of this training manual in religious, educational, or community settings throughout Ethiopia. 6 i ii iii Introduction for Trainers Goals of Training This manual has been created to guide trainers in equipping faith leaders to address the harmful traditional practices (HTPs) of female genital cutting (FGC) and early marriage (EM) with their congregants. As such, the manual has been tailored to meet the unique and appropriate needs of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) faith leaders. (A second guide, identical in content but theologically adjusted, has been created for Ethiopian Muslim faith leaders.) These sessions have been carefully designed to guide faith leaders through sensitive material and discussions, so that they can effectively support their congregants in healthy decision-making regarding FGC and EM. The sessions of this Facilitator Training Manual focus on achieving the following goals among participating faith leaders by the end of the trainings: • Faith leaders will have a substantial understanding of the sociocultural, policy, health and theological underpinnings of EM and FGC. • Faith leaders will adopt the necessary knowledge to improve the health of women by spreading awareness of the dangerous effects of EM and FGC. • Empowered faith leaders and their congregations will be equipped to start dialogues and activities that result in a stronger network of Ethiopians who care for the health of their young girls and women. Preparation This Facilitator Training Manual is specifically designed to educate faith leaders and mobilize them to be advocates for girls/women by addressing the negative effects of early marriage and female genital cutting with their congregation and community. Training Days/Sessions/Hours These trainings should be conducted over the course of four full days, with each unit presented exactly as outlined in the manual. Each day is divided into sessions of subtopics, with goals, required materials, speaking guides, discussion sections, activities and an evaluation checklist. The evaluation checklist helps the trainer ensure that all participants clearly understand the session goals and can effectively act on them with their congregants. If, at the end of a session, the trainer does not feel confident that participants have achieved those session goals, it will be necessary to review that material via more discussion before moving on to the next session. ii iii Who Should Lead These Trainings? These trainings should be led by an educated, passionate, sensitive individual with a respected connection to the faith community being addressed. The trainer does not need to be an adherent of the faith itself (i.e., a Christian can lead a training for a Muslim audience), provided the leader is open, tolerant, knowledgeable about and sensitive to the beliefs of the audience). However, it is vital that any trainers leading these training sessions must: 1) Be willing to dedicate the time to familiarize themselves with the contents of this manual, and seek relevant information from trusted sources to answer any questions that may remain; 2) Have some knowledge of, and familiarity with, the faith tradition being addressed; 3) Have some knowledge of, and familiarity with, the local community in which the trainings are being conducted, and the community’s attitudes towards the practices of FGC and EM; 4) Be able to read, write, and communicate fluently in the local language of these faith leaders; 5) Be able to operate audio-visual equipment, and set up a training hall as necessary; 6) Be able to energetically lead and engage a group of people; 7) Be fully aware of the devastating effects of FGC and EM on the lives of women and girls, and be passionately dedicated to ending these practices. Ideally, before the trainings commence, the trainer should establish contact with high-ranking leaders within the faith (Church officials, Imams, other religious officials etc.), and secure some level of openness and trust. Additionally, it is advisable for the trainer to have some connections or experience working with non-government organization NGO representatives and government officials. Religious officials, NGO representatives, and government officials will be vital allies and resources, and should be invited to speak to the faith leaders in these trainings. Who Should Participate? Faith leaders whose congregations are in communities where FGC is practiced, and girls are married before the age of 18, are the ideal targets for this training. Because the goals of this training are sensitization, education, and empowerment, the faith leader trainees do NOT need to be completely convinced that FGC and EM are negative. In fact, it is good for discussion to involve faith leaders from all sides of the spectrum; multiple opinions lead to healthy disagreement and dialogue. However, the invited faith leaders must be willing to participate in the discussions about the topics, and be open to new ideas. They should be willing and able to stay for all four days of the training. iv v How Should Participants Be Invited? How to go about inviting potential faith leader participants to these trainings is entirely up to you! It helps to have an established connection with a religious or community leader who can facilitate introductions, and possibly provide names of influential faith leaders in the area. Approaching the head office/religious authority in the area with a respectful request for advice, resources, introductions, and connections is strongly advised. Once you have selected your list of faith leaders to invite, allow ample time for them to respond and make travel arrangements, which can vary depending on the location of the trainings, and the accessibility of roads, transportation, etc. However, do not invite faith leaders so far ahead of time as they could forget and/or allow other commitments to supersede. Above all, be sensitive to the needs of your faith leaders and their communities when scheduling these trainings and inviting faith leader participants. Be aware of events that may restrict travel or disruption in routine, such as religious and cultural holidays, and even harvest/rainy seasons (for example, many faith leaders in Ethiopia are also farmers, and cannot travel during the harvest season). Number of participants It is strongly encouraged that each training be conducted in a group of no more than 20 participants. Reasons for this include: 1) The sessions are meant to be interactive, giving everyone a chance to participate instead of just listening to the trainer or visitors; 1) In big groups, it is easy for a handful of the more verbal participants to take over. This would be counter-productive to the goals of the training; 1) People are more likely to agree or disagree with each other if the group is smaller. This promotes healthy discussions; 1) In smaller groups, individual attention and participation is possible; 1) Given the sensitive nature of the topic, it is even more important that the group dynamics and intimacy be at the right level in order to engage everyone and establish a level of comfort. This cannot be effectively done in the time given with a large group. Location of Trainings Because of the sensitive nature of the topics, we highly recommend that training sessions occur in a neu- tral, safe setting.

Its clergy maintains that Christianity arrived in the country during the first century AD (Yesehaq 1997: 13), as a result of the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch, narrated in the Acts of the Apostles (8:26-39). For most scholars, however, the history of Christianity in the region begins with the conversion of the Aksumite ruler Ezana, approximately during the first half of the fourth century AD.1 For historical and geographical reasons, throughout most of its long history the Ethiopian Church has shared strong ties with Egypt and, in particular, with the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. For instance, a conspicuous part of its literary corpus, both canonical and apocryphal, is drawn from Coptic sources (Cerulli 1961 67:70). Its liturgy and theology were also profoundly affected by the developments that took place in Alexandria (Mercer 1970).2 Furthermore, the writings of one of the most influential Alexandrian theologians, Cyril of Alexandria (c. 378-444), played a particularly significant role in shaping Ethiopian theology .3 The purpose of this paper is to highlight the enduring importance and influence of Cyril's thought on certain aspects of Ethiopian Christology from the early developments of Christianity in the country to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Its aim, therefore, is not to offer a detailed examination of Cyril’s work, or more generally of Ethiopian Christology. It was chaired jointly by His Eminence Cardinal Kurt Koch, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and by His Eminence Metropolitan Bishoy of Damiette. Joining delegates from the Catholic Church were representatives of the following Oriental Orthodox Churches: the Antiochian Syrian Orthodox Church, the Armenian Apostolic Church (Catholicosate of All Armenians and Catholicosate of the Holy See of Cilicia), the Coptic Orthodox Church, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. No representative of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church was able to attend. The two delegations met separately on January 22 and 23. Plenary sessions were held January 24-27, each of which began with a brief prayer service based on material prepared for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Although the Eritrean Orthodox Church was established only in the course of the last decade of the 20th century, it shares (together with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church) a heritage of a centuries-old tradition which goes back to the times of Late Antiquity. This young and simultaneously ancient Church is just making its fi rst steps within the institutionalized ecumenical movement, but the interaction with other Christian denominations has already played a constitutive role in its formation. Modern Eritrea is located along the south-western coast of the Red Sea, an area which once used to be the site of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum extending across the Red Sea into the Arabian Peninsula and beyond to the Gulf of Aden. Being a major player in the trade between the Roman Empire and Ancient India, China and Persia, the kingdom fl ourished from the 1st to the 7th century and attracted merchants and settlers from through- out the ancient world. It is therefore natural that the cosmopolite Kingdom of Aksum from the earliest times also had a number of Christians, but they were fi rst of all foreigners and lived predominantly in the port city of Adulis.

    AOOIC Communiqué 2016 The Anglican-Oriental Orthodox International Commission held its fifth meeting from the 24th to 29th October 2016 at the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia, Antelias, Lebanon. The Commission greatly appreciated the welcome to the Armenian Catholicosate by His Holiness Aram I of the Holy See of Cilicia, and was grateful for the kindness and hospitality offered by the Catholicosate brotherhood members and staff. At the opening session, the Commission was welcomed by His Holiness the Catholicos, who addressed its members, and encouraged the continuation of its work towards full visible unity in the face of existing and ongoing differences and disagreements. Having completed its work on the Procession of the Holy Spirit at its 2015 meeting, the Commission continued its reflection on the second part of its Agreed Statement on pneumatology, ‘The Sending of the Holy Spirit in Time (Economia).’ This second part considers the action of the Holy Spirit in the life and mission of the Church making it one, holy, catholic and apostolic. The Co-Chairs signed the second part of Agreed Statement that will be sent to our churches for reflection and comment, after which the Commission will produce the full statement, ‘The Nature and Work of the Holy Spirit,’ in its final form. The Commission discussed the present situation of Christians in the Middle East and heard reports on the difficulties facing churches, particularly in Syria and Iraq, and the situation of refugees in Lebanon. There was a consideration of the most practical ways in which the Anglican Communion in its various countries could respond effectively to the challenges facing Christians in the Middle East.

Goodin, McGill University Alemayehu Wassie, Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia Margaret Lowman, California Academy of Sciences Abstract Remnant Afromontane forests in northern Ethiopia are under threat from development pressures both within Ethiopia and from international interests. These biodiversity hotspots are currently protected by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC), which views the forests as sacred. The academic literature is divided on how to provide food security in this drought-prone nation. This article examines these tensions in the academic literature before turning to the eco-theology of the Ethiopian Orthodox, which both protects these forest fragments and strengthens the communitarianism of traditional Ethiopian society. A case is then made for the continued management of these forests by the EOTC. Keywords: food security, eco-theology, sustainability, famine, Orthodox Christianity Introduction Remnant eastern Afromontane forests survive in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, which are currently protected by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC). These “church forests” (as they are known) are biodiversity preserves of critical importance for the future of Ethiopia, and also spiritual enclaves that are home to churches, monasteries, and other ecclesial lands actively managed by the EOTC clergy, who maintain the forest resources in a sustainable way for their subsistence needs. The active management of these forests for 1 Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Forests centuries by the EOTC have not diminished their ecological value. This is because the stewardship of these forests reflects a body of knowledge gathered from intergenerational and adaptive management by those religious leaders living on these lands, representing a form of traditional ecological knowledge.

The aim of fasting is to make the desire of the body to obey the will of the soul, to seek forgiveness of guilt and to increase the reward of the soul. Fasting has perpetual relation with religion. Even though the way it is practiced differs from religion to religion, anyone who has religion practices fast. Especially in the Old Testament, fasting had a prominent place in the lives of the Jewish people. Whenever the Old Testament prophets sought to communicate with God, they neither ate food nor drank water. (Ex. 34:28). The wrath of God that comes about as a result of sin can be averted through solemn prayer and rigorous fasting. (Jon. 3:7-10; Joel 2:15). In the New Testament also, fasting is not a law made by man. It is our Savior Jesus Christ himself who made it the beginning of His messianic ministry in his earthly life. (Mt. 4:2; Lk. 4:2). Our Savior Jesus Christ has taught that fasting has the power of driving away evil spirits.

To achieve this goal, the thesis has primarily dealt with various themes of creation theology based on the biblico-liturgical texts of the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥədo Church (EOTC). As a second method, the thesis has also analyzed the theological and cosmological presuppositions of the use of created matter in the Ethiopian liturgy. The eclecticism and complexity of the Ethiopic liturgical texts has led to the consultation of numerous biblical and apocryphal sources in the thesis, and this was mainly done to identify the sources of the EOTC’s theology of creation as reflected in the liturgical texts and biblical exegesis of the church. Having closely studied the EOTC’s liturgical texts and its sacramental praxis, the thesis demonstrates that both the eucharistic and non-eucharistic services of the Ethiopian liturgy embody creation motifs and incorporate created elements.
