Summer Reading Guide for It's Trevor Noah: Born a Crime Summer Reading Guide for It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime (adapted for young readers) In several interviews, Trevor Noah explains that his book is about his mother and for his mother. He dedicates it to her, thanking her for “making [him] a man.” What stories and anecdotes about his mother does Noah share with us? What do we know about her? What matters to her? What decisions does she make? What does she experience in her life? How does she respond to adversity? How does she shape Noah’s character and life—how does she make him a man, and what exactly is a man according to this book? Noah’s book also chronicles the evil and insanity of apartheid, or apart hate, as he calls it. It will be important for you to understand what apartheid is, so you may want to read “Apartheid History” in the back of the book (281-292) before you begin on page 3. Can you define apartheid in three or four sentences? What are the similarities and differences of apartheid in South Africa and Jim Crow laws in the United States? Many have said famously that “those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.” What important lessons or take aways can we apply to current social justice issues? What role does Nelson Mandela play in ending apartheid? Let’s also examine this book as writers. Notice how Noah structures his book. Look at the chapter titles on the Contents page. Flip through the book and notice how he begins or ends chapters with a historical explanation or an editorial comment. As you read, notice how this structure changes—helps?—your understanding and enjoyment of the book. As a comedian and television host, Noah clearly knows how to tell stories. Notice how he tells his stories with the printed word. What details does he include? What is his writing voice and style? What aspects of his stories do you enjoy, respect, respond to most? What are your favorite passages in the book? As you read, be sure to mark up (underlining or annotating is best!) all of the contenders for your favorite moment. Be ready to discuss your top three or four when classes begin. (One of mine would be page 182 when Noah adds to the old aphorism about “teaching a man to fish.”) .

Ingram Abstract This thesis explores why traditional climate change communication often fails in the mainstream news media and how late-night comedy television circumvents these problems. These late-night shows provide humorous news coverage that holds politicians and the press accountable for enabling denialist rhetoric. The first chapter sources data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication to outline the issues of climate change and public understanding of climate science. The second chapter describes how rhetorical analysis can identify effective or ineffective climate communication strategies. It also discusses the emotional factors that surround climate change, and how humor strengthens communication and unifies individuals toward a common goal. The third chapter addresses the issue of politically spun news and information biases in climate reporting. It details how political figures influence news coverage of climate change and spin the news to reinforce their own agendas. The fourth chapter provides examples and analysis of climate change related segments from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update.” The fifth chapter applies the principles of late-night comedy and climate change communication to potential government policy and more mainstream television news.

Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

As the British Empire fell, the Afrikaner rose up to claim South Africa as his rightful inheritance. To maintain power in the face of the country’s rising and restless black majority, the government realized they needed a newer and more robust set of tools.

Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. This autobiography will introduce you to Apartheid of South Africa through the perspective of the sagacious, hilarious comedian Trevor Noah. Some of you have studied South African History in IB History and this will fortify what you already know, but from a new perspective. If this is your first introduction, that is perfectly fine! Our first unit of the school year will focus on South African poetry and this will help set you up for that unit. Materials: You may use this online PDF of the book, or you may buy your own copy if you wish. Instructions: Please take notes as you read. You’re going to read about an experience that, at times, will feel unrelatable. Other times, you may be able to closely relate. For each chapter, record 3-5 notes in your notebook or in the book itself, on what you learn about Trevor Noah. What are the experiences he recalls and why?
