PREFACE

This book is the result of ,vork done because of the ,vriter's desire to obtain a knowledge of his o,vn ancestry, and that he might be in a position to hand down facts on this subject to his children. The main f ~mily tree is found in Chart I and that tree for recent generations only is complete in all_ its branches. Notes as to the probablt__ancestry of \Villiam \,\iood of Earlsferry will be found on pp. 51-5j. Charts II to VI contain trees ,vhich are supplementary to the \Vood tree, and in some cases those charts are follo, ved by lists ,vhich further supplement the \Vood tree by furnishing a com plete statement of the descendants of certain colla~~~l ancestors._ These lists follo,v the charts to ,vhich they ·respectively refer, and they contain in full the descendants to the end of 1909 of the following individuals : List I. John Kane (1759-1819) and his ,vife Maria Cochvise (b. 1775). List II. Samuel Redmond ( d. 1825) and. his wife Anne Ramage (d. 1848). List III. Goold Hoyt {1j6g-1841) and his wife Sabina Sheaff. List IV. James '\Vilmer ( 1775-1831) and his wife Ann Emerson. List V. Jacques Benoit Felix de Chazoumes (Ii95- 1868) and his ,vife ?viarie Louise de Brugiere (18o4-1864).

In preparing the charts among the authorities ,consulted were the "East N euk of Fife" by Rev. \V'alter \Vood, second edition published in 1887; "Biographical Dictionary of Eminent 1Ien of Fife" by M. F. Conolly, published 1866; "Autobiography of William \Vood," printed for private circulation 1895 ; "Hoyt, Haight and Hight Families" by Pavid '\V. H~yt, pri~ted 1871; "Historic Families of· America" by \Valter \V. Spooner, printed 1907; "Old Kent; the Eastern Shore of Maryland" by George A. Hanson, printed 18j6; ''.A.merican Genealogy" by Jerome B. Holgate, published 1848; "Distinguished Families in America descended from '\Vilhelmus Beekman and Jan Thomasse. Van Dyke" by \Villiam B. Aitken, published 1912, "Notice Gen- 8 THE ivooD FA~IILY

ealogique sur les f am ill es du F evre et Ar~is de Chazoumes en Forez et Lyonnais" by A. Steye~, besides public documents in the Public Library, the British Museum, in Edin burgh and many private documents and letters _in the possession of members of the family. The lists of collateral descendants ,vere prepared partly from the authorities above mentioned, but largely from data obtained from various members of the family as the result of an active correspondence involving the writing of many hundreds ·of letters. The great importance of accuracy in such work wa_s cons_tantly kept .in vie,v, and every effort was made to avoid errors. It may be~ ho,vever, that mistakes ,vill ·be found, due either to the writer himself or· to inaccuracies in the sources upon ,vhich he was forced ·to depend, although ,vherever practicable he· has obtained a statement of the same facts from t,vo or more sources. __ No individuals appear, in either charts or lists, ,vho were born after the end of 1909, that being the end of the period covered. For the purpose of identification of individuals of similar name, and for other reasons, the years of birth have been given as far as the writer has been ab.le to obtain them, but a complete state ment of the dates of deaths has· not been attempted, only those ,. dates of deaths being included which were obtained f ram sources readily available. . . In cc;>nsulting the lists it will be observed that each individual bas a number in the column at the left of the name. This number ,vill be found again in brackets at the right of each of his or her descendants, thus making it· easy to follow any single line_ direct from parent to child. Thus, for example, on page I I in the First Generation ,vill be found the name "2 Oliver Gren ville Kane." In the Second Generation appear the· names ''16 John Grenville Kane (2)" and "17 Pierre Came Kane (2)." ·The individual numbers of John Grenville Kane and Pierre Came Kane are 16 __and 17, respectively, whi.le the number (2) to the right of each shows they are the children of Oliver Grenville Kane, his individual number being 2. . Gathered merely for the. information of his children, it was not the writer's intention to p~blish this material, but. he has been asked by so many members of the family for copies of the facts obtained that he decided to seek the assistance of the printer. -JA~ES \\"oc.o (a) CH.-\RT I 1 r781-18c6 l died unmarried ,-bv. ,,. .,,_!.YJ:2 '\Vc-oD j lf:A:i1.\" ',\",::;;:, :=) ' J:81.;:-:~8:: ,._ _ u, ,~------· ,., ,.,,, ,, , m. LIST I

DESCENDANTS OF

John Kane (1759-1819) and Maria Codwise

TO THE END OF 1909

NOTE

It will simplify reference to this List if it be und~rstood that the num ber to the lef.~ of an individuai's name is that individual's number in the List, while the number to the right is the individual number of his parent. By the use of these numbers it becomes easy to trace the direct line of descent from parent to child, or of ascent from child to parent.

NoTES ON ANCESTRY OF \'V1LLIAM \Vooo OF EARLSFERRY. There has never been any question in regard to the descent of the family f rem \ Villi am \Vood of Earls£erry ( 1656-after 1720), but although the family tradition has ahvays been that \Villiam \Vood · of Earlsferry ,vas himself descended from Admiral Sir Andre,v \Vood of Largo ( and in this connection the Largo coat of arms has been in use by the family as far back as ,ve have any records) there has been some question as to ,vhich one of certain of the descendants of the Admiral ,vas the direct ancestor of \Villiam \Vood . of Earls£ erry. The ,vriter has accordingly examined such documents as he has been able to obtain ·which bear on this point. "In an 'Extract from unpublished account of the \Voods of Earl sferry and Elie' by the late Rev. \Valter \Vood, author of the 'East N euk of Fife,' there appear the follo, ving lines: 'The first of the family of ,vhom I have any certain laio,vl edge, is \Villiam \Vood, merchant in Earlsferry. The tradi tion in the family has ahvays been that he ,vas of the \Voods of Grange, ,vho ,vere themselves a branch of the \Voods of Largo. It rather favors this tradition that the property which he possessed in Earlsferry ,vas bounded by property belonging to the deceas.ed Andre,v \\iood and of James \Vood of Grange. For probably the ,vhole three properties were originally one, belonging to \V·ood of Grange, and after wards parcelled out among his descendants.' "

The paragraph quoted above appears in a letter ,vritten in 1912 by Rev. J. Wood Bro,vn, ,vho ,vrote the preface to the second edition of the "East N euk of Fife," and ,vho in that pre face states that the father of \Villiam \'Vood in Earls£errv ., ,vas Alexander \Vood ''in Carmurie." Rev. J. \\~ood Bro,vn ,vrites in the letter quoted _above that he ,vas · led to the· conclusion that the father of \Villiam_ \Vood of Earlsferry ,vas Alexander-\Vood "in Carmurie'' by the discovery of an old brooch bearing the inscription "A. \V. born ye 17th l\farch 1653." He continues as follo,vs: · "This brooch belonged to my uncle's· sister, ,vho told me she had it from her mother, l\!ary \Vood of Grangehill, ~nd 52 THE f-VOOD F.411!/LY

that it ,vas an old fan1ily piece. I sho,ved it to my uncle ( the author of 'East X euk of Fife') ,vho copied the inscrip tion but never ,vorked the matter out; that ,vas left for me to do. It seen1ed to me, and seems still, that the connection must be looked for through the ..-\. \\;_ of the brooch, ,vhom I assumed to be a ,voman, and therefore, as born in 1653 probably a sister of our \\iilliam. \Vith this new idea I returned to the registers and found in that of Kilconquhar an Agnes \Vood baptised in -- June 1654. Her parents ,vere Alexander \Vood in Kilconquhar and Agnes Pearson in Elie, ,vho are thus described in the register of their mar riage ,vhich I found in the Kilconquhar Session Record under date of 23 April 1650 ( ?1652). In the Elie Register for 1656 the same couple, no,v described, how·ever, as resident 'in Cannurie' had a son baptised called \\Tilliam, and in 1658 a daughter called Christen. Finally on 10th July 1661 they had a son baptised John: '\Vitnesses John Pearson, Andre,v and James \\'ood.' This last entry ap pears in the Kikonquhar Register. The discrepancy ,vhich you ,vill notice bet\veen the ' ...\.. \ V. born ye 17th 1!arch 1653' ( text of inscription on brooch) and th~ entry of Agnes \Vood baptised --June 1654 (Kilconquhar Record) is in ore apparent than real ; the former ref erring to_ birth and the latter to baptism. If you ,vill read again pp. 185-6 of 'East N euk' you ,vill see the disturbed condition of the country at that time, and ,vill understand that a child might well have to ,vait n1any months in those days before it could be safely carried to church. I have lit_tle doubt that i\gnes \Vood is the A. \V. of the brooch, and as she has, as she should, a brother \\Tilliam, and as A.ndre,v and James \Vood ,vitness the baptism of her brother John, the probability that this \\Tilliam is ours tends to become a certainty. For thus appear again the names, if not the very persons, of that Andre,v and James \V.ood ,vho held properties imme diately adjoining the house and land aftenvards occupied by our \Villiam \Vood in Earls£ erry."

Assuming that the father of \Villiam \Vood of Earl sferry was Alexander \\T ood "in Carmurie," the question then arises as to the pare_ntage of Alexander \ Vood in Carmurie, and in this connection the history of the Carmurie property becomes of interest. An occasional reference to the chart facing page 58 will make the follo, ving remarks clearer. In the· middle of the I 6th century the "barony" of Carmurie was o,vned by the Dishingtons· of Ardros. \Villiam Dishington before 1543 married Elizabeth Crichton, but he appears to have APPE1.VDIX 53 died ,vi thin a f e,v years, and his ,vido,v after 1548 married Ale..."{ander \\rood of Grange, the second son of .A.dmiral Sir Andre,v \\"'ood of Largo. The Rev. J. \"Vood Bro,vn ,vrites: "I find Elizabeth Crichton described as 'Lady Cannurie' in 15j5." She died in 1581. ("East Xeuk of Fife," pp. 183, 215, 216.) Alexander \Vood of Grange sold the .lands of Grange to his nephe,v James \\1ood of Lambeletha1n (p. 184, "East Neuk of Fife"). It \\'Ould appear that in some ,vay the Cam1urie prop erty also passed to this same James \\rood from Elizabeth Crich ton, for in the printed "Retours" (Inquis. Special No. 1529) under date 22nd October, 1596, Alexander \\rod. of Lambelet ham appears as heir to James \ \✓-" od of Lambeletham, his father, in ( amongst other lands) "Drummeis and Carmurie" in Kilconquhar. This Alexander \Vood of Lambeletham (,vho in 1596 o,vned Carmurie) had a son James \Vood, ,vho ,vas his heir. \Villiam vVood, an uncle of this James \\:--ood, is spoken of as his "tutor," or, as ,ve ,vould say, guardian. \Vi!liam \\rood had a son, David \\Tood, his heir ("East Xeuk of Fife," pp. 18-1-, 185). Thus it ,vould appear that the members of the fan1ily probably connected ,vith the Carmurie property in the early part of the 17th century ,vere the hvo brothers ..Alexander and \Yilliam \Vood and their respective sons James \V·ood and David \Yood, and it would appear probable that Alexander \\Tood "in Carmurie" was descended from one of these four men.* On this point the Rev. J. \\iood Bro,vn ,vrites as follo,vs:

"Neither the ..A.lexander \\Tood of the "Retours,'' ,vhose will is registered in 1606, nor \Villiam \'iood, Tutor of Lambeletham, ,vho died in or before 1613, can have been the father of .A.lexander \\rood in Carmurie, ,vho, as mar ried in 1650, must be supposed born about 1625. To imagine him the son of James \Vood of Grange (and Lambeletham) who married ~Iargaret 11 unro c. 1620 ('East N euk of Fife,' p. 185) does not contradict any obvious fact, and agrees

* On page 484 of "Biographical Dictionary of Eminent l!en of Fi_fe" it is stated that \Villiam \Vood, the guardian, "appears to ha\"e had" three sons, Andrew, David and James, and that Andrew and Da\·id settled in Earls ferry, while James resided in Elie and y.;as the father of ,villiam -Wood of Earlsferry. It seems probable, however, that this statement is incorrect. 54 THE ivooD FA-~f/LY

well ,vith the neighborhood of \Villiam ( of Earlsferry) Alexander's son, and James \Vood of Grange (probably the later James the Rutemaster, 'East Neuk of Fife,' page _185) in their Earlsferry properties."

This does not appear unreasonable, but on the other hand, it is of course possible that the Cannurie property passed to \Villiam \Vood, the guardia-!}, and to his son David \Vood, ,vho may have been the father of Alexander \Vood "in Carmurie." The cir cumstantial evidence that \Villiam \Vood of Earlsferry ,vas the son of Alexander \Vood "in Cannurie" and ,vas through him descen_ded from the \\ioods of Grange and Admiral Sir -~ndre,v \Vood of Largo is strong, but the ,vrit~r thinks it only proper to point out that the question as to the exact line of descent is not decided by any direct eYidence in his possession, though such evidence may be obtained in a more extended examination of the very voluminous records of the Fife district than the writer has found it possible to undertake.

The Family of Wood: Admiral Sir Andrew Wood of Largo. "The name of Wood occurs at an early period in Scottish annals. William de Bosco [ \ y· ood] ,vas Cancellarius Regis, and is mentioned from I IjO to 1246. The \Voods of Craig in Augus of Bonnyton in the same county, and of Golpny in i\berdeen, ,vere all of them ancient families, probably springing from one com mon stock. The \Voods of Largo, the only branch belonging to the County of Fife, ,vere founded by Admiral Sir Andrew \Vood, the first Laird of Largo." "This n_oted ocean ,varrior_ is gen erally stated to have been born about the middle of the fifteenth century at the· old kirkton of Largo. The only evidence bearing on this point: ho\vever, is a charter in his favor in 1490, giving to him and his ,vife the cotelands 2:nd milne lands of Largo, ,vhich formerly belonged to Helen Arnot, daughter and heiress of the deceased John Arnot of Largo, and the spous~ of the deceased \Villiam \\'ood, and ,~hich ,vere resigned by her. Such a charter might, of course, follo,v on a purchase of these lands by Sir Andre,v f ram Helen \Vood, but it is also possible that William \Vood and Helen \'V ood (Arnot), ,vere the father and APPEJ.\TDJX 55 mother of the Admiral. Sir Andre,v may have been descended from the ,Yoods of· Bonnyton in .A..ugus, as Abercrombie says he was. There appears, at any rate, to have been son1e acknc,vl edged affinity behveen the families, for as early as 15 I I there is confirmation of a charter by Sir .A.ndre,v \Vood of Largo, in favour of \Valter \Vood of Bonnyton.'' Pp. 482 and 485, "Biographical Dict!onary of Eminent l\Ien of Fife." Of Admiral Sir Andre,v \Vood "The East N euk of Fi£e" contains many picturesque details (pp. 63-85) of ,vhich the fol Jo,ving are a f e,v. He "is famed in the history of his country no less for his faithful adherence to his sovereign ,vhen aband oned by his nobles, than for his courage and naval skill." "His genius for naval ,varfare had been cultivated by his frequent encounters w·ith French, English and Portugese pirates, in defence of his ships and merchandise as a Leith merchant-trader." "Prior to 1487 he appears to have entirely giYen up trading as a merchant, and to have devoted himself to the service of the King." He possessed and commanded hvo armed vessels of about 300 tons each, called the "1Iayflo\ver" and the "Yello,v Caravel," and it is these vessels ,vJ-1ich appear in his coat of arms, the third and larger vessel being supposed to be the vessel commanded by the English captain Stephan Bull, ,vho in July 1490 set sail from London ,vith "three vessels, manned by picked mariners, a body of crossbo\v and pikeman, ,vith various Knights ,vho volunteered their services, intending to intercept Sir Andre,v on his return voyage from Holland,· ,vhither he had been convoying a fleet of Scottish merchantmen." Bull cast anchor east of the 1',Jay, and one summer morning, directly after da,vn, t\vo ships ,vere descried coming under sail by St. Abbs Head. These proved to be \Vood's ships, and "the sun had no,v risen, and shone full upon the English vessels, displaying their magnitude to the eyes of the Scots. By skillful manage ment \Vood got to ,vind, vard of the foe, and immediately a close _and furious combat ensued, ,vhich lasted till night. The shores of Fife ,vere, during the ,vhole· day thronged ,vith spectators, who by their shouts and gesticulations expressed their alternate hopes and fears. During the night the combatants lay by to refresh and refit; at the da\vn the trumpets ·sounded again to arms. . • . At length the valour and seamanship of \Vood pre vailed; the three English ships ,vere captured and brought into THE ivoon F_4.J.1[/LY

Dundee, ,vhile Bull ,vas taken to Edinburgh, and presented to the King • . . As a mark of royal favour, Sir Andre\v received ~ charter under the Great Seal, of date r4th l\Iay, 149r, in \vhich license is given him to 'build a castle at Largo ,vith iron gates, on account of the great services done, and losses sustained by the said Andre\Y, and for the services it i.vas confidently hoped he ,vould yet render: and because the said Andre,v had, at great personal expense, built certain houses and a fortalice on the lands at Largo, by the !Lands of E,zglislz11ze11, ca-ptured by Jzi,n, with the object of resisting and expelling pirates, ,vho had often invaded the Kingdom and attacked the lieges.' " 0.f the above battle ,ve read in the "Biographical Dictionary of Eminent l\Ien of Fife," "Then ensued that famous naval combat of ,vhich historians give ·so full an account, and ,vhich the _minstrals of the day celebrated throughout Europe.

'The Scotsmen fought like lions bold, And many English sle,v ; The slaughter that they made that day, The English folk shall rue.

The battle fiercely it ,vas fought Near the craig of Basse; \Vhen next ,ve fight the English loons, 1fay nae ,vaur come to pass'."

The Admiral "is described by l\fr. Tytler as 'a brave \varrior and skillful naval commander an able financialist, intimately acquainted ,vith the management of commercial transactions, and a stalwart feudal baron, ,vho, ,vithout abating anything of his pride and his prerogative, refused not to adopt, in the manage ment of his estates, some of those improvements ,vhose good effects he had· obsen·ed in his travels over various parts of the continent.' "-"Biographical Dictionary of Eminent l\Ien of Fife," page 488. Sir Andre,v appears to have prospered,- for in 151 r- there is a charter by ,vhich King James confirms a sale of certain lands " 'to an honourable man, Andre,v \\-ood of Largo, and his spouse, on account of a certain sum of money gratuitously and ,vholly dis charged for me, in mea magna exigentia et urgente necessitate.'" APPENDIX 57

" 'From the time of the defeat of Stephen Bull, Sir Andre"" held a place very near the throne, and his ,vise counsels, especially in commercial matters, ,vere much listened to by the King.' " . In 1513 Sir Andre,v resigned his lands to the King and on the 2r August of that year received a ne,v charter " 'granting to him and his ,vi£ e the lands of Largo as before described, the lancJs of• Fa,vfields and Frostlees and Bre,verslands, united into a barony for ever'" . . . "Sir Andre,v, no,v an aged man, appears to have. retired aft.er this from public life, and to have spent his remaining days in his castle of Largo. Sir Andre,v married Elizabeth Lundin before 1487, and he died in 1521.
