    pathways to free education 1 On process The origin of an idea is almost impossible to trace however the sparks that help concretise, or allow ideas to emerge in clearer form, are often easier to trace. In the case of Pathways to Free Education the work of this popular education collective emerges out of the challenges in the mass student-worker action in South Africa in 2015 in particular. After a conversation with anti-apartheid activist and committed journalist Zubeida Jaffer where she reflected on the role of publishing and “writing where you are” in the struggle, the idea of a more targeted effort to engage in the processes of pamphleteering to tease out, open discussion and debate around issues facing the movement at a time began to flower across many independent contexts across the country. Ours is merely a drop in the ocean of the work being conducted across the city, region, country and globe amplifying the urgent needs to address the roots of oppression and in particular the devastating impacts of colonialism. This booklet has been put together explicitly for the purposes of facilitating discussions, reading groups and the hosting of independent popular education spaces. The content has in some sense been collaboratively developed but due to many factors, not the least of which being time, energy and resources, much of the work that has been done here without as much communication across chapters and pieces as we might have liked. The intent, as seen in a number of the chapters, has been to raise discussion within the booklet itself to undermine the very notion that because “it” is written or published “it” is valuable or “true” knowledge.

    Freilach 1 Jennifer Freilach 15 March 2016 HIST 461: Final Draft Hollywood’s Vietnam: How Critics and Audiences Responded to the Vietnam War Genre Introduction In 1975, Julian Smith, author of Looking Away; Hollywood and Vietnam, said, “Vietnam was like a movie that had gotten out of hand: gigantic cost overruns, shooting schedule run amuck…and the last [auteur] swearing it was finally in the can, but sneaking back to shoot some extra scenes.”1 Vietnam may have been like a Hollywood movie for Smith, but more importantly, Hollywood movies served as a tool to understand the war in Vietnam. Previous cultural historians already established a relationship between politics and the film; however, the majority of literature on the subject overemphasized the on-screen elements of a film, like dialogue, and overlook other aspects, like film reviews published in newspapers. The perception and reaction to a film is just as important, if not more so, than an auteur’s intention. Existing literature on Vietnam War film widely agreed that Hollywood looked away from it while the war was in progress. This idea traces back as early as 1975 in Smith’s book, Looking Away.2 Since its publication, numerous historians either directly referenced Smith or reflected a similar assessment of Hollywood. Without a doubt, Smith’s evaluation of Hollywood film was correct at the time of publication; however, Looking Away was at a historical disadvantage. 1 William J. After graduating from the University of Southern California and serving in World War II, he worked in promotions and advertising at Disney and 20th Century Fox. He then pursued screenwriting and his first credit came in 1955, as co-writer of the film 5 Against the House. He worked steadily for forty years as a film and television writer and producer.
