This article synthesizes evi- dence from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Phoenicia, Greece, and Jerusalem to explain the reason for this duality. Many scholars suggest that the symbol of the serpent was used anciently to represent Jesus Christ but that Satan distorted the symbol, thereby creating this para- dox. Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

I argue that the complex status of tyche in Aristotle's texts, when combined with its appearance in the Platonic dialogues and the framework of Greek myth and poetry (poiesis), underscores the seriousness with which the Greeks consider the role of chance in human life. -

SPURGEON, AT THE METROPOLITAN TABERNACLE, NEWINGTON. “And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, Arise, get you to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain you.” 1 Kings 17:8, 9. THE prophets taught as much by their doings as by their sayings—they were as truly prophesying to the people by the miracles which they worked, as by the messages which they delivered. There was of- tentimes a symbolic meaning in their actions; in fact, they were constantly teaching the people by out- ward symbols, which, alas, those people were usually of too dull an understanding to interpret, but which, nevertheless, were a sign to them! In the case of Elijah, a prophet of concise speech who said but little, but said that with a voice of thunder, I do not doubt that the narratives connected with his life, are meant to be to us a kind of acted prophesying, full of richest meaning. Let us see what we can gather, this morning, from the inexhaustible barrel, and unfailing cruse of the widow of Sarepta. I know not how it is that I feel bound in spirit to preach upon this incident this morning, but this widow seems to have followed me for the last two or three days with all the importunity of the widow in the parable who would take no denial; and I trust that there may be some here for whom I bear, under sacred compella- tion, a message from the Lord. -

The archaeology of Le banon has been somewhat neglected over the years, despite its importance for our understanding of the region in the medieval period, mainly because of the civil war (1975-1990), which made excavations and surveys in the country impossible and led to the widespread looting of sites (Hakiman 1987; Seeden 1987; Seeden 1989; Fisk 1991 ; Hakiman 1991; Ward 1995; Hackmann 1998; Sader 2001. -

It is one of a number of names associated with the chief goddess or female divinity of those peoples. Her symbols were the lion, the horse, the sphinx, the dove, and a star within a circle indicating the planet Venus. Pictorial representations often show her naked. She has been known as the deified evening star.[2] Astarte was worshipped in Syria and Canaan beginning in the first millennium BC and was first mentioned in texts from Ugarit. She came from the same Semitic origins as the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar, and an Ugaritic text specifically equates her with Ishtar. -

Shifting Networks and Community Identity at Tell Tayinat in the Iron I (ca. 12th to Mid 10th Century B.C.E.) , , , , , , , , Open Access on AJA Online Includes Supplementary Content on AJA Online The end of the 13th and beginning of the 12th centuries B.C.E. witnessed the demise of the great territorial states of the Bronze Age and, with them, the collapse of the ex- tensive interregional trade networks that fueled their wealth and power. The period that follows has historically been characterized as an era of cultural devolution marked by profound social and political disruption. This report presents the preliminary results of the Tayinat Archaeological Project (TAP) investigations of Iron I (ca. 12th to mid 10th century B.C.E.) contexts at Tell Tayinat, which would emerge from this putative Dark Age as Kunulua, royal capital of the Neo-Hittite kingdom of Palastin/Patina/Unqi. In contrast to the prevailing view, the results of the TAP investigations at Early Iron Age Tayinat reveal an affluent community actively interacting with a wide spectrum of re- gions throughout the eastern Mediterranean. The evidence from Tayinat also highlights the distinctively local, regional character of its cultural development and the need for a more nuanced treatment of the considerable regional variability evident in the eastern Mediterranean during this formative period, a treatment that recognizes the diversity of relational networks, communities, and cultural identities being forged in the generation of a new social and economic order.1 -

Scale 4:1. 65 n January 1930, a University of Michigan team excavating in IIraq at Seleucia-on-the-Tigris, the eastern capital of the Hel- lenistic Seleucid kingdom, uncovered a cache of clay sealings that now reside in the Kelsey Museum (McDowell 1931, 26). These are pieces of clay or bitumen, which carry impressions of individuals’ seal rings. Such items, commonly known as bul- lae, were used to close and notarize papyrus documents in the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, and Early Roman eras. The Michigan team’s 1930 finds proved to be the first of two private archives located beneath the second/first century BCE block of Parthi- an houses excavated in their six seasons at Seleucia. The sealings from the two archives came to a total of 166 pieces (McDowell 1935, vii, 10–14).1 Seventy years later another Michigan team discovered a roughly contemporary archive (open from 200 to 145 BCE) of more than 2,000 seal impressions at Tel Kedesh in the Upper Galilee of modern Israel (Herbert and Berlin 2003, 51–53). Meanwhile, an Italian team excavating at Seleucia in the 1960s and 1970s found a large public archive building of Hellenistic date containing upward of 25,000 sealings (In- venizzi 1985; Bollati and Messina 2004); these carried dates of between 257 and 154 BCE (Messina and Mollo 2004, li).
