Little known, but an outstanding readBy BractonThis novel is one of the earliest detective novels written, having first been serialized in a weekly magazine. The narrative is presented through statements and documents collected by a private investigator acting on behalf of an insurance company. The question, posed almost immediately, is whether Baron R., a mesmerizer, caused the deaths of three people. Victorian and Edwardian detective fiction can be very often be a tiresome read. Not so with this novel; the narrative moves quickly, the dialogue is crisp, and I was soon engrossed by the tale. I could easily suspect Baron R. of foul play; my interest was maintained by wondering how his involvement could be brought home to him. This novel is as good as anything written 60 or 70 years later in the much-ballyhooed Golden Age.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Concept In Mystery WritingBy AndrewI was intrigued to find something entitled "The First Detective Novel", and after reading this book, I think it is aptly named. Detective fiction has come a long way since the mid-1800's! Although the mystery is not officially solved, the reader definitely knows the solution (from early in the book). The presentation of facts is given in a straightfoward manner, but the plot is definitely lacking. I have given this a four star just because the facts are so well presented and because it, most likely, is the first attempt at writing a detective novel/mystery. It is actually more like a case-study and a report which accompanies the study, than a novel.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dense Writing StyleBy Montana MackayThis is a strangely presented novel and I am struggling to work through it. The plot is interesting (delicate young woman perishes, husband is blamed) but the language (written in 1862) is more stilted than what I am used to. Much more stilted even than Dickens or Trollope or Austen. There is enough intrigue to tempt me forward to figure out what happened to this frail young woman, but the going is dense and at times meandering. Not sure I'll be able to finish. Can you name the first detective novel ever published? For years, many believed it to be Wilkie Collinsrsquo;s The Moonstone, published in 1868. Others speculated it might be Eacute;mile Gaboriaursquo;s first Monsieur Lecoq novel, Lrsquo;Affaire Lerouge. Actually, the firstmodern detective novel predates both of these by several yearsmdash;Charles Warren Adamsrsquo;s The Notting Hill Mystery, originally published as an eight-part serial in Once A Week magazine in 1862 under the pseudonym Charles Felix, then as a single-volume novel in 1863 by Bradbury Evans, is considered to truly be the first. ldquo; The book is both utterly of its time and utterly ahead of it.rdquo; [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams PDF [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams Epub [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams Ebook [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams Rar [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams Zip [qjbsS.ebook] The Notting Hill Mystery By Charles Warren Adams Read Online.
