American Masters, now celebrating its 30th season, brings a unique perspective to our country’s cultural icons. Each episode takes viewers on a journey through the subject’s creative process. From writers and musicians to artists and actors, American Masters has covered many of the greats. American Masters has been nominated for 70 Emmy Awards and has won 26 of them. The series has also won 12 Peabody Awards and an Oscar. Each episode reveals the style and substance of its subject. This month on WYCC PBS Chicago, learn more about an architect, a director, and an athlete.

Eero Saarinen: The Architect Who Saw the Future Sunday, January 8 at 7 p.m. Saturday, January 14 at 6 p.m. Explore the life and visionary work of Finnish-American modernist architect Eero Saarinen. Some of his well-known structures include St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, New York’s TWA Flight Center at JFK Airport, Virginia’s Dulles Airport, and several colleges at Yale University. His son, Eric Saarinen, visits the sites of his father’s work on a cathartic journey.

By Sunday, January 15 at 7 p.m. Film legend Sidney Lumet tells his own story with candor, humor, and grace. He reveals what matters to him as an artist and as a human being. This episode features clips from Lumet’s 44 films, made over the course of 50 years. Lumet is known as one of the most accomplished, influential, and socially conscious directors in the history of cinema.
