This thesis presents an evolution of Appalachian representations—or, more appropriately, a chronology of images in stasis, as they seem to have remained fairly unchanged over time. Responses to those images, however, have changed greatly. Most importantly, responses from within Appalachia have transformed, with regional people gaining power over the types of images of the region in popular culture.

  • LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the Heels of Their
LITTLE BIG TOWN BIOGRAPHY PAIN KILLER Hot on the heels of their wildly successful album Tornado, Little Big Town’s prescription for continued success and creative drive is in their sixth album, Pain Killer. The two years since Tornado’s release have proven to be the most formative and motivational for the inspired family of artists, together since 1998. In the short time since Tornado, Little Big Town earned two number one radio hits with Tornado and Pontoon, a Grammy, two ACM and three CMA awards and an Emmy. They also found time to headline a sold-out tour, join Keith Urban across North America and host the CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock twice. These hard-earned accolades and new opportunities provided a steady dose of inspiration at every turn, leading them to a fresh and very intentional approach to their latest studio album. They co-wrote most of Tornado’s songs as a group and knocked out production in a matter of weeks, whereas the road to Pain Killer was significantly longer in the making, and much more calculated. LBT intentionally began writing and curating their songs early in their tour for Tornado in May 2013. They followed the creative energy wherever it flowed by splitting into different writing combinations. “We decided not to lock ourselves into writing as a group. We wanted a more relaxed and free approach,” says Karen Fairchild. “There was no pressure to write as certain groups at certain times. We followed the inspiration instead of forcing it.” “I don’t know that we would have written Tumble and Fall if the boys had been in the room,” she continues.

I wanted to take advantage of that by painting the walls a more dra- matic color than I would normally use,” the owner of Kendall Sim- mons Interiors says of her decision to implement Sherwin Williams Rainstorm in the space. “Chaney needed a comfortable place for her and Bree to retreat to and write, as well as a practical desk area to work from. Once those two functional needs were handled, the rest was a matter of incorporating their Emerald Blue concert posters and other music memorabilia. • SONGWRITING 101: an Introduction to Words & Music Lessons
SONGWRITING 101: An Introduction to Words & Music Lessons INTRODUCTION The following songwriting lessons are helpful in preparing students for Songwriting 101. The pre-lesson encourages students to think about what they already know about songwriting, while teaching them about the specific parts of a song. Completing the pre-lesson ensures that the Songwriting 101 session will be a productive co-writing experience with a professional songwriter. The post-lesson reinforces what students learned and allows them to reflect on the songwriting experience. The KWL chart helps students activate background knowledge and combine new information with prior knowledge. It is important to complete all columns on the chart as a class, especially the “L” column, following the session with the songwriter. Songwriting 101 teaches students the basics of songwriting as a creative outlet to express emotions and strengthen skills learned in traditional language arts classes. Songwriting 101 is a precursor to Words & Music, the Museum’s flagship school program. A step-by-step lyric- writing experience, Words & Music supports standards in English language arts and music, and culminates with an interactive performance by a professional songwriter who presents student lyrics as finished songs.
