12 My Hometown stpetersmo.net Volunteer Program Celebrates 20 Years! So much has happened in the past two decades, but some things never change: Since the City of St. Peters began its Volunteer Program in 1994, we’ve had a steady contribution from volunteers in our community—incredible folks who are here just to help the City put on programs, provide services and keep taxpayer costs down. Consider these numbers over the past 20 years: •The City’s volunteers have logged 152,000 hours! That’s almost as many as the total hours (174,720) that have passed in those 20 years. •We figure that volunteers saved more than $1 million in salary if you add up all of their contributions. That’s an average of more than $50,000 per year! •Many volunteers are in it for the long haul. We have seven volunteers today who have been helping since the beginning of the Volunteer Program, 11 more volunteers who have been with us for 15-plus years, and another 16 volunteers with 10-plus years of service. And, the program continues to remain strong. Last year, St. Peters received 7,000 volunteer hours! Volunteers helped with community events, office tasks, boards and commissions, cleaning trash from streets, trails and streams, and more. Celebrate So, why do our volunteers keep coming back to help? We asked them, and here are some of their responses: St. Peters “I enjoy the time that I volunteer and being around a lot of people.” Among “The opportunities are so varied and the staff is exceptional.” Volunteer “I love my City and I want to do my part to help out whenever I can to show my appreciation.” Opportunities “It keeps me active in my retirement.” Above, a volunteer blast from the past at the Halloween Two upcoming events that always “I feel there is a need and my work is appreciated.” Carnival; below, Julie McMahon honored for 4,000 hours need plenty of volunteers are our Mayor Len Pagano praised our volunteers at a recent recognition Celebrate St. Peters celebration at ceremony.
