Books-By-Mail BOOKLIST
Books-By-Mail BOOKLIST Sep/Oct, 2012 Large Print Best-sellers/Best-selling Authors — Fiction Archer, Jeffrey The Sins of the Father With war between Britain and Germany on the horizon, Harry Clifton has joined the merchant marines to escape long buried family secrets that have just come to light. The very day that Britain declares war on Germany, a U-boat sinks Harry's ship. While recovering on a passing American cruise liner, Harry seizes the chance to escape his tangled past by stealing the identity of an American killed in the explosion. But upon landing in America, he quickly finds how mistaken he was when he — as his taken identity, Tom Bradshaw — is arrested for murder. Without any way of knowing the details of the charges, or of contacting his family across the Atlantic, or of even proving that he is anyone other than Bradshaw, Harry Clifton is trapped behind bars and chained to a past that is far worse than the one he had hoped to escape. Atkins, Ace Robert Parker’s Lullaby When 14-year-old Mattie Sullivan asks Spenser to look into her mother’s murder, he’s not completely convinced that the police investigation four years ago was botched. Mattie is gruff, street-smart, and wise beyond her years, left to care for her younger siblings and an alcoholic grandmother in a dilapidated apartment in South Boston. But her need for closure and her determination to make things right hit Spenser: They’re the very characteristics he abides by. Mattie believes the man convicted of the crime is innocent and points Spenser to the drug dealers who she saw carrying her mother away hours before her murder. -

Sharpless, Lawyer from Pennsylvania, includes trip to World's Fair. Catawissa, PA. 1893. An 1893 pocket diary for John R. Sharpless, a twenty-two year old man who was studying to become a lawyer. While doing so he was working for William H Rhawn, a prominent attorney from Sharpless' hometown of Catawissa, PA. Sharpless writes short, detailed, entries on a daily basis, until he stops abruptly on October 29. Each entry includes the weather, both temperature and description, as well as a list of everything he had done that day. The majority of Sharpless' life at that point revolved around the law, either in the form of various cases he was working on for his boss, Rhawn, or studying for the bar exam. Additionally a large portion of the diary is dedicated to his courtship of Lois Gearhart, the woman who, a few short years later, would become his wife. Other topics include various social activities with his friends and family, such as card games, billiard games, sleigh rides, or fishing trips (he was avid angler). Two events of note take place during this year, the first of which is his trip to the Chicago World's Fair (aka World's Columbian Exposition) with a group of his friends, including Lois Gearhart. -

Criticism Volume 13 | Issue 3 Article 7 1971 Book Reviews Criticism Editors Follow this and additional works at: http://digitalcommons.wayne.edu/criticism Recommended Citation Editors, Criticism (1971) "Book Reviews," Criticism: Vol. 13: Iss. 3, Article 7. Available at: http://digitalcommons.wayne.edu/criticism/vol13/iss3/7 Book Reviews Spenser's Anatomy of Heroism by Maurice Evans. London: Cambridge Uni· versity Press, 1970. Pp. viii + 244. $5.95. Maurice Evans' Spenser's Anatomy of H eroisnz forms a corrective to much recent criticism of Spenser. It tries to see the whole of Tbe Faerie Queene against a definition of the heroic poem. For this definition Evans goes to writers like Tasso, Sidney, Puttenham as well as to Hallett Smith's discussion of the genre in Elizabetban Poetry (1952), and the reader has, on beginning the book, the expectation of another intelligent study like Evans' earlier English Poetry in the Sixteenth Century (1967). One is willing to agree with him that "recent Spenserean criticism, although doing ample justice to the myths, the verbal techniques and the rhetoric of the poem, had tended to play down what once seemed the element of most importance, namely its didacticism," and to welcome his placing "the emphasis once more upon Spenser's didactic inten tion "-" to fashion a gentleman." Yet, one soon finds that Evans, in pursuing his definition, has slighted the audience for which the didacticism was intended and that his final reading of the poem slights even his definition of the genre in pursuing a rather eclectic methodology whose value resides too often in its unstated premises and the strength of Evans' own sinewy, individual and accurate insights. -

Parker's Lullaby (Spenser) before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Robert B. Parker's Lullaby (Spenser): 21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Not Parker, but not badBy bkI was a little fearful as I started reading Lullaby. After seeing what Michael Brandman did to Jesse Stone I worried that Spenser would be lost as well. Ace Atkins work is reminiscent of the early Spenser. A bit more gritty and the writing less refined. The sentences were choppy with too many "I said" and "she said" as Atkins tried to copy Parker's melding of many short statements rather than descriptive sentences. Choppy. I felt that the characters had lost a little of what Parker had developed them into, but not so much in a bad way. The intimacy of Spenser's relationship with Susan seemed to have lost ground, becoming more about sex than two people who loved and supported each other unconditionally. Again, it was like the early Spenser books, with tight relationships, but dialed back in ways.
