Using biometry and statistical analysis we determined the proportion of miniature queens in Plebeia remota that were either mated (14%) or virgin (45%). Mated queens were mostly normal- sized which indicated that they were more successful. Nevertheless, the presence of miniature mated queens heading colonies confirmed that they also are viable. The egg-laying capacity of mated queens of differ- ent sizes was determined using colony exchange experiments. The results showed that egg laying is not influenced by size differences. Therefore, miniature mated queens may be as successful in laying eggs as normal-sized queens. Em uma colônia encontramos duas rainhas grávidas, sendo que apenas uma delas punha ovos; a principal atividade da outra rainha era o trabalho com cerume na região do tubo de entrada da colmeia. As principais atividades dos machos na colônia eram as relacio­ nadas com o néctar: foram observados machos desidratando néctar e trabalhando como receptores de néctar. Possivelmente o néctar seja desidratado para consumo próprio. Estes fatos não foram observados anteriormente nos Apidae sociais, onde machos não trabalham. ABSTRACT This work presents some new aspects of the activities of virgin queens, pregnant queens and males of Schwarziana quadripunctata. Some work with cerumen was performed by the queens of Schw ar­ ziana quadripunctata. Two pregnant queens were found in a colony: the activity of the oldest was related to the oviposition; the youngest queen worked with cerumen in the canal entrance. The chief activities of the males of S. quadripunctata inside their colony are related to nectar. Some males were seen working with cerumen and other working as nectar receivers and dehydrating nectar. Possibly this nectar was dehydrated for their own nourishment. In other social Apidae, the males don’t work.

In this work, we measured the genetic diversity of the stingless bee Plebeia remota based on molecular data obtained by analyzing 15 microsatellite loci and sequencing two mitochondrial genes. Population structure and genetic diversity differed depending on the molecular marker ana- lyzed: microsatellites showed low population structure and moderate to high genetic diversity, while mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) showed high population structure and low diversity in three populations. Paulo 1:299-312, 1976 Observations on a Queenless Colony of Plebeia Saiqui (Friese) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponinae) VERA LUCIA IMPERATRIZ-FONSECA MARIA AUGUSTA CABRAL DE OLIVEIRA Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências da Universidade de São Paulo ABSTRACT Observations on building, provisioning, oviposition and operculation in a queenless colony of Plebeia saqai (Friese) are described. The normal aspect and behaviour showed by the orphan bees could be explained due to the fact that the colony had a great number of worKers. By the third month, modifications in the processes and in the behaviour were observed and queen-liKe behaved worKers were found. Nectar dehydrating and worK with cerumen are mentioned as being also male activities. Other observations are also described as the reutilization of empty cells and problems of oophagy, as well as the shape and the size of the combs. RESUMO O presente trabalho descreve observações feitas em uma colônia órfã de Plebeia saqui (Friese), com relação a construção, ao aprovisionamento, a oviposição e à operculação das células. Durante três meses as operárias apresentaram uma construção de células regular, que poderia ser resultante do grande número de abelhas existentes na colmeia, ou uma característica do gênero. Por volta do 3.° mês os processos de aprovisionamento e oviposição modifi­ caram-se e houve o aparecimento de operárias que se comportaram como rainha. Foram observados machos na colônia, filhos das operárias, que executavam trabalhos com cerume e desidratavam nectar. São descritas outras observações referentes a reutilização de células vazias, oofagia, forma e tamanho de favos. Cep 44031-460 eraldont@ulfs·br ABSTRACT.- This paper focuses on the ethnotaxonomy and significance of bees and wasps to the Pankarare Indians living in a semi-arid zone of the Northeast of the State of Bahia, Brazil. The survey was conducted with the Pankarare from Srejo do Burgo village. Data were obtained by using ethnoscientific methods and through open interviews with natives and a native specialist in ethnoapiculture. A total of 23 folk species were recorded within the folk category "abria," the label used for both Apidae and Vespidae. Considering the ethnotaxonomic aspects, "abeias" are classified in two groups as "fierce bees" and "mild bees". They are also sub-divided into three intermediate taxa depending upon whether or not they sting and, ifso, if they can sting repeatedly. Eleven folk species are sources of medicine. Wild honey is the main raw material used in the treatment of illnesses and as food. Honey is also an important source of income for the Pankarare. These insects play significant roles in the social, economical, and cultural life of this group. RESUMO.- Este artigo focaliza a etnotaxonomia e importancia de abelhas e vespas para os indios Pankarare, grupo residente em uma regiao do semi-arido do Nordeste do Estado da Bahia, Brasil. 0 estudo foi realizado com os Pankarare da aldeia Brejo do Burgo.

    H U M a N I M A L I A 6:1 Natasha Fijn Sugarbag Dreaming: the significance of bees to Yolngu in Arnhem Land, Australia Introduction. We pile out of the dusty four-wheel drive troop carrier and begin walking in separate groups of two or three, bare feet crunching through the dry grass. The only other sounds are occasional resonant taps from an axe testing whether a trunk is hollow; or when the women periodically call to each other to keep within earshot amongst the scattered stands of stringybark trees. It is easy, open walking through country. The extended family group I came with care for the land by setting fire to the grass during the drier months, particularly at this time of year, sugarbag season. I observe while the women in their brightly coloured skirts with their young children or grandchildren look closely at the trunks of the trees and up into the canopy at the blue sky beyond, scanning for signs of the tiny black stingless bees. Today offers good conditions for finding honey. If the conditions are too cool or windy the bees tend to stay in their nest, not venturing out to forage. We hear a yell in the distance indicating that a nest has been found and walk to the small, scraggly-looking tree. The teenager, who located the bees, begins to chop down the tree to get at the nest inside. Children hold onto their jars and containers in keen anticipation of the rich, sticky honey within the tree. Once the women have opened up the nest, they do not only consume the liquid honey but collect everything with the beaten end of a stick: the wax, larvae, pollen and the odd entrapped stingless bee.
