History of Art at Mount Holyoke College, 1872-1914 Robert L. Herbert, 2018 Preface and acknowledgements In this study I’ve drawn extensively upon Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz and Arthur C. Cole (see Bibliography), whose excellent work supersedes early studies of the college. However, they do not address the history of art except in passing, so my contributions come from careful readings of Mount Holyoke's course catalogues and archival records. Among several colleagues who have directly helped me, I must single out three for unusual contributions. Bettina Bergmann, Helene Phillips Herzig ’49 Professor of Art, gave me advice about antique casts and relevant bibliography. Austin Clark (see Bibliography) wrote a splendid Master's thesis on history of art at the college with Bergmann's guidance. Like Horowitz, he wrote a sterling piece of cultural history that lets me focus on a chronological account of art history at Mount Holyoke while deferring to him and Horowitz. Chris Bennett, Director of Lincoln Library, Lake Erie College, gave generously of his time to compose ten pages of previously unknown records from all Lake Erie documents that referred to Louise Fitz-Randolph. From: Thom Hecht Dancing Archives – Archive Dances Exploring Dance Histories at the Radcliffe College Archives August 2013, 208 p., 32,80 €, ISBN 978-3-8376-2479-3 This book presents the first in-depth archival exploration of a lost history of dance as an extracurricular activity at Radcliffe College, the women’s liberal arts college of Har- vard University, during the first half of twentieth century. Using archival story-ing, an innovative methodology that brings the researcher’s lived experience at the Radcliffe College Archives into the historical discourse, three archive stories were created. These vivid narratives thrive in the researcher’s personal encounters with the surroundings of the archive and the interpretation and reading of what is to be found giving pro- found insights into what it means to walk in the footsteps of Radcliffe dance history. Thom Hecht received a Ph.D. in Dance from Texas Woman’s University and held an appointment as Visiting Fellow at Harvard University (2010-2012). http://www.ucalgary.ca/hic • ISSN 1492-7810 2010/11 • Vol. 9, No. 1 The Moral and Religious Ideals of Students at Vassar College and Wellesley College, 1865-1900 Ángel de Jesús Cortés Abstract This article examines the moral and religious ideals of students at Vassar College and Wellesley College during the period 1865 to 1900. Students of this persuasion recorded their musings on ideals such as beauty, purity, and sincerity in literary publications, class notes, student papers, and reminiscences. Although Idealists’ lofty preoccupations do not deny the larger social forces transforming collegiate culture, it does suggest the presence of an intellectually serious undergraduate whose interests were decidedly normative. Introduction College students of the late nineteenth century (1865-1900) are often remembered for the pranks or games they played or the riots they instigated.1 Although some scholars have tried to distinguish between different types of students, and admitted that a small species of “grinds” took their studies seriously,2 the impression persists that the majority of students considered college as “a necessary evil, a price to be paid for admission to the greatest show on earth, campus life.”3 The origins of this recollection stretch back to at least the early twentieth century, when Henry S. Canby described the undergraduate mind as “a slab of course-grained wood upon which the cabinetmaker lavished his stain. Its empty pores soak in the polishing mixture, no matter how richly it may be applied, and in many instances we fail to get the expected gloss.”4 Half a century later, Laurence R. -

Schuster, LMU München Dissertationsprojekt: „Entering State: Women’s College Alumnae as U.S. Diplomats” Abstract zum Dissertationsprojekt Was verbindet Madeleine Albright mit Aurelia Brazeal, Barbara Mae Watson und Jeane Kirkpatrick? Sie alle gehören zu den Frauencollege-Absolventinnen unter den ersten US- Diplomatinnen – eine Gruppe, die im Verhältnis zur geringen Zahl dieser Colleges in den USA überproportional groß ist. Das Projekt erforscht die Bedeutung ihrer Ausbildung für die ersten Frauen in den elitären Kreisen der US-Diplomatie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Elitedenken kennzeichnet diese Welt nicht nur auf sozio-ökonomischer und geschlechtsspezifischer Ebene, sondern auch mit Bezug auf race. Es gilt also Bildung und diplomatischen Rang entlang dieser Aspekte zu beleuchten und die Hürden nicht-weißer Frauen aufzuzeigen. Das Projekt bietet einen neuen, innovativen Zugang zu Diplomatie- und Hochschulgeschichte, ihren Subjekten und Quellen, indem es den Bildungsweg und die Diplomatin ins Zentrum rückt. Über einen vielseitigen Quellenkorpus, der unter anderem Nachlässe, Interviews und College Archive umfasst, ist das Projekt in der New Diplomatic History und deren breitem Diplomatieverständnis verankert. Text und Fragestellungen Der anschließende Text gibt einen Einblick in die frühe Geschichte der sogenannten ‚Seven Sisters‘, der Gruppe der historischen Frauencolleges im Nordosten der USA. Die Gründungen dieser Institutionen sind eng miteinander verknüpft: sie entstanden zwischen 1865 und 1889 und nahmen aufeinander Bezug. Außerdem nahmen spätere Einrichtungen die Colleges dieser Gruppe häufig zum Vorbild. Heute werden sowohl einzelne Institutionen als auch die Gruppe kollektiv oft als prominente Beispiele für diesen Einrichtungstyp herangezogen – obwohl einige von ihnen mittlerweile koedukativ arbeiten. Insgesamt sind die Seven Sisters von großer Bedeutung für mein Dissertationsprojekt, das sie zahlreiche, hauptsächlich weiße US- Diplomatinnen ausgebildet haben. -
