chap 2 22/3/04 12:12 pm Page 50 2 The most perfect state: French clerical reformers and episcopal status As a general council of the church, Trent offered a framework within which a resurgent catholicism could take shape. To a man, its delegates took it for granted that the clergy would lead the laity, and that bishops would supervise and govern all the faithful. While the conciliar decrees were designed to respond, therefore, to the specific abuses and inadequacies of contemporary religion, they drew equally on what were assumed to be eternally applicable principles of hierarchy and authority. The church had always possessed its lead- ers and its followers; that was both a practical necessity and God’s plan. Both had to be accommodated in permanent rules that would preserve the church until the end of time. While this projection of episcopal leadership was to pro- voke opposition from some quarters, many reformers rose to the challenges that it had identified by building on its platforms of hierarchy and reform. Lead- ing theologians and reformers embarked on extended explorations of what ‘reform’ meant and how it could be achieved within a hierarchical church. Their imprint could be seen before the end of the sixteenth century, but no one was to have more impact than the French reformers of the seventeenth century. This ‘school of priesthood’ developed a sacerdotal theology and training methods which were still standard sources for the formation of Catholic priests during the twentieth century; through the seventeenth and eighteenth cen- turies, its members’ understanding of the ministry was widely diffused both within and outside France and they gradually succeeded in implementing many of their aims for clerical renewal within the French church. -

The title of this symposium, "L'Age d' Or: The Roots of Our Tradi tion," invites us to explore the French school of spirituality. The term "French school of spirituality" is quite controversial. Some historians disagree with the name; others deny the existence ofsuch a school; still others do not think that Saint Vincent or Saint Louise belonged to it. It is necessary, then, to clarify ideas on the subject. All historians of the church in France would agree, I think, that the seventeenth centuryin that country, like the sixteenth in Spain, was the golden age, Ie grand sieclei of spirituality or, better, the golden age of Christian renewal. Eleven days after the death of their Society's founder, the priests of Saint-Sulpice gathered to elect his successor. Just as, on 2 April 1657, Vincent de Paul had been invited to accompany Jean-Jacques Olier at his deathbed, so too, on 13 April, had he been asked to accompany Olier's young community at this momentous meeting. We possess only a fragment of the discourse that Vincent delivered. It is written in the hand of M. de Bretonvilliers, who would soon be elected as Olier's successor. Speaking of their founder and his friend, Vincent said to the grieving Sulpicians: "The earth holds his body, heaven hi s soul, but his spirit resides in yoU."l Surely Vincent himself felt much the same grief as did the members of Olier's society. -

17th Century French Spirituality Rodrigue Page 1 of 29 This introduction will have four parts, first, in order to appreciate the spirituality of seventeenth-century France, a description of the state of religious practice at the end of the sixteenth century; second, a brief summary of De La Salle’s contact with the French School of spirituality; third, a selection of passages from De La Salle’s meditations to show how he made use of the principal themes of that spirituality, and fourth, how he developed an original spirituality for the community of Brothers he established, which is pertinent to all Christian teachers today. I Religious Practice in France at the End of the Sixteenth Century Before illustrating the spirituality of De La Salle with selections from his meditations, it seems advantageous to describe the state of religion in France at the end of the sixteenth century, in order to understand better the spirituality of the seventeenth century, which was in large part a reaction to that condition. This will also help understand better the spirituality of the Founder. “To speak of the decadence of religion in France at the end of the sixteenth century has become commonplace, both for historians and biographers.” After 40 years of civil war, the social structure was riddled with the worst disorders, and the practice of religion had become increasingly abandoned. At all levels of the Catholic hierarchy, made up of men from the upper class, there was every sort of intrigue and complicity to maintain privilege and gain promotions to higher status and greater financial benefit. -

Introduction Louis Marie de Montfort is undeniably linked to what is generally known as the French school of spirituality (at times called seventeenth century spirituality, the Bérullian school, the Bérullians). He received his formation at Saint-Sulpice Seminary (1692-1700) and later kept in close touch with his directors of formation; as a result, he is one of the best heirs and witnesses of the French school. H. Brémond has justly called him “the last of the great Bérullians.” It must be noted at the outset, however, that although Montfort retained the main characteristics of the doctrine and teaching methods of Cardinal de Bérulle and Jean-Jacques Olier—among the many and varied spiritual writers used as his sources—he did it in a way distinctively his own. JOHN EUDES (1601-1680) Robert Fastiggi, PhD St. John Eudes united devotion to Mary with devotion to her Son, Jesus Christ. For Eudes, the hearts of Jesus and Mary are inseparable. He recognized that the union of their two hearts is the most intimate union that ever existed. The heart of Jesus dwells in his Mother’s heart, forming a perfect union of the two hearts as one mystical heart. Eudes promoted the Feast of the Admirable Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to express the mystical union of the two hearts.
