ON THE BENCH MICHAEL SCHWARTZ Associate Head Coach •Texas, 1999 • Fourth season at Tennessee; played two years under Barnes at Texas and was a member of the 1999 Big 12 Championship team (then became a GA on Texas’ staff). • Spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa, helping the Golden Hurricane advance to the NCAA Tournament. • Prior to that, he spent four seasons as the lead assistant under Rodney Terry (another Barnes pupil) at Fresno State, including one year as associate head coach. • No stranger to the Southeast and East Coast, Schwartz spent six years on staff at Miami (Fla.) in the ACC. DESMOND OLIVER Assistant Coach • Dominican College, 1992 • Fifth season at Tennessee; before joining the Vols, he spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Charlotte. • This is his 24th season in the Division I coaching ranks; he has experience in the Atlantic 10, Big 12, Ivy League and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. • Also boasts five years of previous SEC coaching experience at Georgia from 2004-09. • A native of Buffalo, New York. KIM ENGLISH Assistant Coach • Missouri, 2012 • Joined the Tennessee staff in April 2019 after two years as an assistant coach under Tad Boyle at Colorado and was an assistant at Tulsa during the 2016-17 season. • In May 2018, the NABC included English on its 2017-18 Under Armour 30-under-30 listing, one of only five selections from “Power Five” programs. • The Pistons selected English with the 44th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, and he appeared in 41 games during the 2012-13 season. • Was a four-year letterman at Missouri (2008-12), earning All-Big 12 honors; Mizzou won 107 games durng his career (winningest player in program history). GARRETT MEDENWALD Director of Sports Performance • Wisconsin-Whitewater, 2013 • Fifth season at Tennessee; he had three previous years of experience working alongside head coach Rick Barnes at Texas from 2012-15. • As a football running back at UW-Whitewater, he helped lead the Warhawks to back-to-back national championships in 2010 and 2011. • An elite powerlifter, Medenwald was a national qualifier in Olympic weightlifting and was a coach and co-founder of the UW-Whitewater Olympic Lifting Club. • Native of Green Bay, Wisconsin (lifelong Green Bay Packers fan). CHAD NEWMAN Athletic Trainer • Tennessee, 1994 • 24th season with the Tennessee basketball program. • Under his care, the Vols have advanced to postseason play 15 times, including 11 NCAA Tournament berths and six Sweet Sixteen appearances. • 2009 Tennessee Athletic Trainer’s Society (TATS) Athletic Trainer of the Year. • Native of Chattanooga, Tennessee BRYAN LENTZ Director of Player Development/ Video Coordinator • Lenoir-Rhyne, 2000 • Second season at Tennessee; is a North Carolina native. • Had four previous years of experience as a member of Rick Barnes’ basketball staff at Texas. • His father, John Lentz, was a legendary head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne and was Barnes’ roommate during college. • Spent the 2014-18 seasons as an assistant coach at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. MARY-CARTER EGGERT Director of Basketball Operations • Tennessee, 2011 • A two-time Tennessee graduate, Eggert is in her fifth season working in a basketball operations role. • One of only two women currently holding the role of director of basketball operations with a men’s program at a major-conference school. • Spent three years on UT’s media relations staff, working closely with the Tennessee football program from 2012 to 2014. • Native of Richmond, Virginia AUBIN GOPORO Director of Student-Athlete Development • Florida Tech, 1996 • A native of the Central African Republic, Goporo is in his third season as a part of the basketball staff • Coordinates community outreach and service efforts and also serves as a student-athlete mentor for personal and professional development. • Served as the Director of Student-Athlete Development last season at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. • Spent 15 years at the helm of the boys basketball program at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne, Florida. I.J. POOLE Assistant to the Head Coach • Texas, 2015 • In April 2019, Poole returned for his second stint on Rick Barnes’ Tennessee staff. • He previously was a graduate manager at Tennessee from 2015-17; this is his fifth overall year working with Barnes, as he was a two-year student manager at Texas. • Prior to returning to Tennessee, Poole worked for two seasons on the full-time staff at Appalachian State. • In 2017-18, he served as App State’s director of basketball operations. He then was promoted to assistant coach for the 2018-19 campaign.
