From the General & Artistic Directors

Dear Friends,

What a year the past one has been! Throughout 2015, Seagle Music Colony celebrated its first 100 years with much fanfare by audiences, alumni and friends of the Colony from across the last century. Among the many incredible events were wonderful performances by the young artists, an exciting alumni reunion, and the biggest and best Gala in our history.

This year, we are poised to continue the excitement instigated by our centennial and charge headfirst into the dawn of our second century with another amazing season of performances as well as great plans for our long-term future. Once again, our 2016 young artists have been chosen from the very best young singers across the country. We know you will enjoy watching them perfect their craft over the summer while they entertain you during the delightful productions. Meanwhile, recent SMC alumni again populate every major summer opera program in the country, and more and more of them are making exciting debuts all around the world.

One of the most exciting things that will happen in this first year of our second century will be the world premiere of Evan Mack’s new opera Roscoe. Considering SMC’s long history of fostering composers and our recent string of successful workshops of new , we think it’s so appropriate that we begin our second century with something brand new. We hope that many of you will be able to attend and play the role of the very first audience for this exciting new work.

As we look to the future of Seagle Music Colony, we’re excited to continue the improvements to the campus with construction of a brand new nine-bedroom faculty housing that will be completed by the beginning of our 2017 season. We’re also completing a full campus master-plan that will include new artist housing, a new dining/gathering facility, and a state-of-the-art 250-seat theater located just across the drive from the Oscar Seagle Memorial Theatre. Having this vision in place for our future is the first step in continuing excellence during SMC’s second century, but in order to make it all happen we will need the help of many.

As you enjoy the performance today, think about how SMC and your experience here has enriched your life and please consider making a contribution to Seagle Music Colony to assist us with our efforts. We need your help to stay strong and vital into our next 100 years.

Enjoy the show!

Tony Kostecki, General Director Darren K. Woods, Artistic Director

From the Board of Directors

Welcome to the 101st season of the Seagle Music Colony, the world’s pre-eminent vocal training program.

The Board of Directors is excited to usher in the beginning of our second century with the implementation of our overall campus improvement plan. Site preparation has already begun for the construction of a new faculty housing facility, which will be ready for our 2017 season. Plans are also in place for the revitalization and enhancement of our campus, including the construction of a new state of the art theater across the driveway from the current theater, while maintaining the present Oscar Seagle Memorial Theater as a rehearsal space and museum. These are indeed exciting times at Seagle and we look forward to your continued support to bring our plans to fruition.

Rest assured, that our excitement about our building plans will not in any way deter us from our uncompromising dedication to producing opera and musical theater of the highest quality. Darren and Tony have once again assembled a talented group of young artists, who will continue the Seagle Music Colony tradition of presenting fresh and lively performances in our unique, intimate concert venue, which enhances your engagement with our performers. This is, and will always be, our signature pledge to our young artists and you, our audience.

We hope you enjoy this year’s performances, and be sure to speak with me, Darren, Tony or any of our Board members, about ways in which you feel you can contribute to our exciting future.

Thank you for coming. Enjoy the performance.

Plot Summary A lonely San Francisco waitress, Rosabella, has a mysterious secret admirer. After months of exchanging letters, she finally asks him to send her his picture. Fearing that she will not love him due to his old age and poor appearance, Tony -- an elderly Italian- American vineyard owner from Napa -- sends her the picture of his young and handsome ranch hand, Joe. When Rosabella finally visits Napa, tragedy occurs. Tony gets in a car crash and nearly dies. While Rosabella is furious with Tony for deceiving her, she ultimately agrees to go through with their mail-order-bride agreement. She is comforted by the younger and handsomer hired hand, Joe, whose picture Tony had sent her. As Tony heals from his accident, Rosabella ends up truly falling in love with the kind, old man. When Rosabella discovers that she is pregnant with Joe's baby, however, things get more complicated.

About Patrice Munsel Patrice Munsel was not only a star coloratura at the Metropolitan Opera but also broke all box office records in the history of musical theatre while starring in The Merry Widow in Lincoln Center. Her musical career included performing in many of the major television variety shows, specials, and dramas. She starred in the movie Melba as the famous opera singer and also had her own television program, The Patrice Munsel Show. Ms. Munsel lives in Schroon Lake year round. She actively supports the Seagle Music Colony program, and gives master classes for the singers.

About Jim & Eileen Carnahan Jim and Eileen were first introduced to Seagle Music Colony by their neighbor on the east shore of Schroon Lake, Joan Lomnitzer. To say that they jumped into involvement with the Colony with both feet is an understatement. Jim has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2011 and serves as the chairperson of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, organizing volunteer workdays and generally overseeing the constant upkeep of the SMC campus. In this capacity, Jim can often be seen around campus working on one or more projects. Jim and Eileen also have made it a practice to attend each and every one of the young artists’ 9 am mock audition classes. For the past few years, Jim has offered his services as videographer to record the audition classes, distributing DVDs that allow the SMC young artists an opportunity to review their performance along with the faculty commentary to help them continue to improve. Jim has also volunteered to photograph and video record all the dress rehearsals for the summer productions for archival purposes and also so that the young artists can see their performances. Many of Jim’s production photos are seen on the SMC website. On top of all of this, Jim and Eileen often have small or large groups of young artists over to their home on the east shore to enjoy the beach and lake, and are also major financial contributors to the Colony. Jim and Eileen each own and operate independent analytical service companies in the Capital District and recently added a lab location in Florida that allows them to avoid the cold Northern winters.

About Hailey Clark Hailey will be remembered by SMC audiences for her stunning portrayal of Juliet during her second season with the Colony in 2010. Since her two years (2009 and 2010) at SMC, Hailey has made a major mark on the opera scene. She spent two summers at the prestigious Santa Fe Opera and has made debuts across the U.S. including Florida Grand Opera, North Carolina Opera, Saratoga Opera and Fort Worth Opera. She is now in residence in Vienna, Austria and made her European Debut in Salzburg. During the upcoming season she will make her German debut in Stuttgart.

20 The Elixir of Love

SYNOPSIS

ACT I

Nemorino, a young villager, is unhappily in love with the beautiful farm owner Adina, who he thinks is beyond his reach. The peasants, who have gathered around Adina, ask her what the book she is reading is about and she tells them the story of how Tristan won the heart of Isolde by drinking a magic love potion. A regiment of soldiers arrives led by the pompous Sergeant Belcore, who immediately introduces himself to Adina and asks her to marry him. Adina declares that she is in no hurry to make up her mind but promises to think over the offer. Left alone with Nemorino, Adina tells him that his time would be better spent in town, looking after his sick uncle, than hoping to win her love. He should do this or do as she does and change his affections every single day. Nemorino reminds her that one can never forget their first love.

Dulcamara, a traveling purveyor of patent medicines, arrives in the village advertising a potion capable of curing anything. Nemorino shyly asks him if he sells the elixir of love described in Adina’s book. Dulcamara claims he does and pulls out a bottle of Bordeaux. Though it costs him his last ducat, Nemorino buys and immediately drinks it. Dulcamara explains that he will have to wait until the next day—when Dulcamara will be gone—to see the results. Nemorino begins to feel the effect of the “potion” and, convinced he will be irresistible to Adina the next day, feigns cheerful indifference towards her. Surprised and hurt, Adina flirts with Belcore. When orders arrive for the sergeant to return immediately to his garrison, Adina agrees to marry him at once. The shocked Nemorino begs her to wait one more day, but she dismisses him and invites the entire village to her wedding. Nemorino desperately calls for the doctor’s help.

ACT II

At the pre-wedding feast Adina and Dulcamara entertain the guests with a song. Adina wonders why Nemorino isn’t there. She doesn’t want to sign the marriage contract until he appears. Meanwhile, Nemorino asks Dulcamara for another bottle of the elixir. Since he doesn’t have any money left, the doctor agrees to wait so Nemorino can borrow the cash. Belcore is bewildered that Adina has postponed the wedding. When Nemorino tells him that he needs money right away, the sergeant persuades him to join the army and receive a volunteer bonus. Nemorino buys more elixir and suddenly finds himself besieged by a group of girls. Unaware of the news that his uncle has died and left him a fortune, he believes the elixir is finally taking effect. Adina feels responsible for Nemorino’s enlistment, but her concern turns to jealousy when she sees him with the other girls. Dulcamara boasts about the power of his elixir and offers to sell Adina some, but she is determined to win Nemorino in her own fashion.

Nemorino now feels sure that Adina cares for him: he noticed a tear on her cheek when she saw him with the other girls. Adina returns to tell Nemorino that she has bought back his enlistment papers. When he again feigns indifference, she finally confesses she loves him. Belcore appears to find the two arm in arm and takes his leave, declaring that thousands of women await him elsewhere. Dulcamara brags to the crowd that his miraculous potion can make people fall in love and even turn poor peasants into millionaires.

24 ROSCOE

Synopsis ACT I Scene 1: V-J Day, The Ten Eyck Hotel, Albany, New York. Roscoe Conway, a lawyer by trade and the behind-the-scenes operator of the Albany Democratic machine, conducts business as usual amid the revelry. A vision of his deceased father Felix reminds him how to run the Party best. Roscoe again steels his resolve to quit politics. Scene 2: Later that night, at the Fitzgibbon Steel Mill. Roscoe has been summoned to deal with the suicide of his best friend, Elisha Fitzgibbon. A vision of the dead Elisha speaks to Roscoe. Roscoe finds an old photograph and recalls his love for Elisha's wife, Veronica. Veronica arrives at the mill, grief-stricken. Scene 3: After Elisha's funeral, populated with colorful personalities from the Party underbelly, Veronica summons Roscoe to her home. He reveals to her that Elisha's death was a suicide. She tells him that her sister, Pamela, is suing for custody of her son Gilby, whom Veronica and Elisha raised after Pamela gave him up. After much hesitation, Roscoe agrees to take the case. Scene 4: Roscoe appears in court to defend Veronica and Gilby. As Felix and Elisha offer commentary from the realm of the dead, we see how Roscoe's young love for Veronica fell apart, and how he ended up in a brief and unhappy marriage to Pamela. Amid the melee, the judge orders the case postponed. Roscoe clutches his heart, overcome by sharp chest pains. Scene 5: As payroll policemen stake one of the Party-controlled whorehouses, deceased gangster Jack "Legs" Diamond recounts in a ballad the story of his own assassination. Meanwhile, at a cockfighting pit, Party boss Patsy squares off against his brother Bindy in a fixed cock fight. While trying to broker peace between the brothers, Roscoe collapses from a massive heart attack. Scene 6: Roscoe lies in convalescence at Veronica's home. They kiss. Veronica's older son Alex arrives home from the war. Once the golden boy mayor who left for the front, Alex must now fight for re-election. Mustering all his strength, Roscoe vows to help Alex win. Meanwhile, their fathers, Felix and Elisha, join them from the beyond in a rousing quartet to life, death, victory, loss, and the inevitable passage of time.

ACT II Scene 1: Alex campaigns for Mayor. As he lays a wreath at a new Veterans' Memorial, Roscoe sings the praises of the Albany Machine, passed from father to son. Roscoe remembers his father, Felix, and the scene flashes back twenty years to Felix's deathbed. Felix sings the praises of the Albany Machine, passed from father to son, trades barbs with the priest brought in for last rites, and dies - but not before willing the family brewery to Roscoe, sealing Roscoe's place in the Prohibition underbelly. Scene 2: Mac, going behind O.B.'s back, informs Roscoe that Patsy's cops are about to raid the Notchery in retaliation for Bindy's theft of $40,000 in the fixed cockfight. Roscoe goes to the Notchery to urge Bindy to return the money. Suddenly, police break in: not Patsy's payroll police, as expected, but State Troopers sent by the Republican governor. As he is hauled out in handcuffs, Roscoe gives an improvised press conference, casting the Democratic Party and the good people of Albany as victim. Scene 3: Bindy grudgingly returns Patsy's $40,000. O.B. confronts Mac for leaking news of Patsy's raid. Still consumed by jealousy over credit for killing "Legs" Diamond, Mac assassinates O.B. Distraught by the death of his brother, Roscoe remembers his generation's political high tide: the 1932 Democratic convention. At the convention, Elisha ruminates on his campaign for Governor. Roscoe and Veronica steal a moment of forbidden intimacy. Elisha's opponent Lehman is declared the nominee. Alex, who is being groomed for a bright political future, steps into his Aunt Pamela's hotel room, revealing the incest that begat Gilby. Scene 4: Alone in the courtroom, Roscoe deduces that Alex is Gilby's father. In an effort to protect Alex from scandal, Roscoe claims that Elisha fathered Gilby in a forcible encounter with Pamela, and that Pamela blackmailed the family. Veronica retains custody, and Roscoe & Pamela part on humorously acrimonious terms. Scene 5: In the great Tristano Lodge, Roscoe sings a lullaby to Gilby and then takes him upstairs to bed. Alone downstairs, Veronica packs up some of Elisha's things, realizing that her marriage is finally over. Roscoe comes back downstairs. In an ecstatic duet that recapitulates their young love theme, they undress and slowly turn out the lights. Scene 6: A chorus celebrates Alex's election as mayor of Albany. Alex reproaches Roscoe for depicting Elisha as a rapist. Roscoe retorts that he knows the unmentionable secret of Gilby's true parentage. Alex declares the Fitzgibbon family off limits to Roscoe. Veronica approaches Roscoe, and breaks off their romance. Crestfallen and tired, Roscoe boards The Night Boat, where he walks among gambling tables populated by a wordless chorus of the dead.
