Throughout 2015, Seagle Music Colony celebrated its first 100 years with much fanfare by audiences, alumni and friends of the Colony from across the last century. Among the many incredible events were wonderful performances by the young artists, an exciting alumni reunion, and the biggest and best Gala in our history. This year, we are poised to continue the excitement instigated by our centennial and charge headfirst into the dawn of our second century with another amazing season of performances as well as great plans for our long-term future. Once again, our 2016 young artists have been chosen from the very best young singers across the country. We know you will enjoy watching them perfect their craft over the summer while they entertain you during the delightful productions. Meanwhile, recent SMC alumni again populate every major summer opera program in the country, and more and more of them are making exciting debuts all around the world. One of the most exciting things that will happen in this first year of our second century will be the world premiere of Evan Mack’s new opera Roscoe. Considering SMC’s long history of fostering composers and our recent string of successful workshops of new operas, we think it’s so appropriate that we begin our second century with something brand new. We hope that many of you will be able to attend and play the role of the very first audience for this exciting new work. As we look to the future of Seagle Music Colony, we’re excited to continue the improvements to the campus with construction of a brand new nine-bedroom faculty housing that will be completed by the beginning of our 2017 season. We’re also completing a full campus master-plan that will include new artist housing, a new dining/gathering facility, and a state-of-the-art 250-seat theater located just across the drive from the Oscar Seagle Memorial Theatre. Having this vision in place for our future is the first step in continuing excellence during SMC’s second century, but in order to make it all happen we will need the help of many. As you enjoy the performance today, think about how SMC and your experience here has enriched your life and please consider making a contribution to Seagle Music Colony to assist us with our efforts. We need your help to stay strong and vital into our next 100 years. Enjoy the show! Tony Kostecki, General Director Darren K. Woods, Artistic Director From the Board of Directors Welcome to the 101st season of the Seagle Music Colony, the world’s pre-eminent vocal training program. The Board of Directors is excited to usher in the beginning of our second century with the implementation of our overall campus improvement plan. Site preparation has already begun for the construction of a new faculty housing facility, which will be ready for our 2017 season. Plans are also in place for the revitalization and enhancement of our campus, including the construction of a new state of the art theater across the driveway from the current theater, while maintaining the present Oscar Seagle Memorial Theater as a rehearsal space and museum. These are indeed exciting times at Seagle and we look forward to your continued support to bring our plans to fruition. Rest assured, that our excitement about our building plans will not in any way deter us from our uncompromising dedication to producing opera and musical theater of the highest quality. Darren and Tony have once again assembled a talented group of young artists, who will continue the Seagle Music Colony tradition of presenting fresh and lively performances in our unique, intimate concert venue, which enhances your engagement with our performers. This is, and will always be, our signature pledge to our young artists and you, our audience. We hope you enjoy this year’s performances, and be sure to speak with me, Darren, Tony or any of our Board members, about ways in which you feel you can contribute to our exciting future. Thank you for coming. Enjoy the performance. /VB3 / A/ O,(s0-02 A SURVEY OF THE RESEARCH LITERATURE ON THE FEMALE HIGH VOICE THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the University of North Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By Roberta M. Stephen, B. Mus., A. Mus., A.R.C.T. Denton, Texas December, 1988 Stephen, Roberta M., Survey of the Research Literature on the Female High Voice. Master of Arts (Music), December, 1988, 161 pp., 11 tables, 13 illustrations, 1 appendix, bibliography, partially annotated, 136 titles. The location of the available research literature and its relationship to the pedagogy of the female high voice is the subject of this thesis. The nature and pedagogy of the female high voice are described in the first four chapters. The next two chapters discuss maintenance of the voice in conventional and experimental repertoire. Chapter seven is a summary of all the pedagogy. The last chapter is a comparison of the nature and the pedagogy of the female high voice with recommended areas for further research. For instance, more information is needed to understand the acoustic factors of vibrato, singer's formant, and high energy levels in the female high voice. PREFACE The purpose of this thesis is to collect research about the female high voice and to assemble the pedagogy. The science and the pedagogy will be compared to show how the two subjects conform, where there is controversy, and where more research is needed. Information about the female high voice is scattered in various periodicals and books; it is not easily found.

  • S. HUROK Presents MARIAN ANDERSON
    S. HUROK presents MARIAN ANDERSON America's Great Singer LADY FROM PHILADELPHIA Manan Anden,on' history•making tour of the Far Ea>t Inspired this draw1ng by joseph Hir ch which RCA Victor made into the cover for it recording of "The Lady from Philadelphia." Once, perhaps, in a generation a phenom enon appears in the music world: that rare artist, who in his own lifetime, becomes sur rounded by the aura of legend. Jenny Lind, Paganini, Liszt, Caruso, Pavlova, Chaliapin were such fabulous figures for their contem Edward R. Murrow, Miss Anderson and S. H urok poraries; such a legend for our own time is before the great inger's departure for the Far Ea t. Marian Ander on. It is not Mi s Anderson's remarkable voice alone which has brought her to this estate, but also some unique, almost mysterious quality that makes her singing seem to par take more of the spirit than of the display of a mere physical gift. Possibly it i this spiritual quality that has made Marian Anderson so important to our uncertain era, for her art both stems from and communicates a deep faith, infinitely touching and reassuring in its certainty. Thi quality, the splendor of her voice and the rare dignity and modesty with which she has conducted her brilliant career have brought her the tributes of the world's great: governments, kings, univer ities, cities and organization . T oscanini said, "Yours is a voice heard once in a hundred years." ibelius told her, "The roof of my house is too low for your voice." Stanislavsky brought her white lilacs in the depths of a Moscow winter.
