Brooklyn, 1876-Mount Kisco, NY, 1956. Born Edith Helen Seymour, Helena originally sang as Helen Jenynge (I guess pronounced Jenning, her married name at that time) and recorded for Berliner in 1898 under that name. It was originally thought that “Jenynge” was some sort of Berliner misspelling, but she appears in at least one New York Times article in 1898 under this name. She subsequently sang as Edith Helena. In the early 1900s she appeared in Europe, apparently in concert, and recorded there for Beka. Upon returning to the U.S., she appeared in variety and vaudeville programs. One, at the Paradise Roof Gardens in Manhattan, 1903 included Miss Helena as well as “Aga” (the mysterious floating woman), Agnes Mahr (“the eccentric danseuse”), Riccabona’s horses (doing “tricks”) and Gilette’s dogs (performing “amusing, clownish stunts”). Such was show biz at the time. Helena had a few Victor recording sessions, beginning in 1903, and one for Edison cylinders, concluding her commercial recording career in 1921 with an Edison Diamond-Disc. She appeared in opera, most notably with the Century Opera Company in English language productions of various works, including the heroines in Madama Butterfly and Rigoletto. In later years, Helena worked from her home as a seamstress but in the 1950s she had a great success as a singer on the TV show, Life Begins at Eighty. 1807. 12” Blk. Pats. • EASTMAN NOTES JUNE 2004 Draft: Final Date: 6/15/2004 INSIDE
NOTES JUNE 2004 A MAGAZINE FOR ALUMNI OF THE EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC FROM THE EDITOR The right “stu≠” Dear Eastman Alumni: We like Notes’ new look, and it seems you do too. Response has been unani- mously favorable; perhaps we should consider a Steve Boerner–David Cowles NOTES presidential ticket for 2008. I’d vote for them; these two artists made “Notes Volume 22, Number 2 nouveau” a pleasure, and I’m glad the pleasure was conveyed in the magazine June 2004 itself. I write the stuff, but they (and our photographers) make it look good! We also had a tremendous response to our “Eastman Alumni on CD” feature; Editor see pages 33¬34. And enough of you commented on different editorial aspects of David Raymond Notes (not always favorably) that we have a “Letters to the Editor” section, which Assistant editor may be a first for us. Christina Casey This issue of Notes is admittedly filled with history, but Susan Conkling’s re- Contributing writers minder of the great women who shaped both American music and Eastman, and Martial Bednar Amy Blum Paul Burgett’s reminder of four black composers who Christine Corrado played an important part in Eastman history, are stories Contributing photographers worth telling. As is the story of the success of Howard Kurt Brownell Hanson’s Merry Mount at the Met in 1934—a remarkable Gelfand-Piper Photography event, when you think about it. I should add a special Bob Klein Photography word of thanks here to David Peter Coppen, the Sibley Carlos Ortiz Don Ver Ploeg/VP Communications Library Archivist, who is always helpful with providing Amy Vetter historical photographs and other materials for Notes, but Photography coordinator outdid himself for these three articles.

The “Slavic Spirit” and the Opera Scene in Olomouc, 1830–19201 Jiří KOPECKÝ Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts of Palacký University Olomouc Univerzitní 3, 771 80 Olomouc, Czech Republic E-mail: [email protected] Lenka KřUPKOVÁ Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts of Palacký University Olomouc Univerzitní 3, 771 80 Olomouc, Czech Republic E-mail: [email protected] (Received: June 2017; accepted: September 2017) Abstract: In 1830, a new theater building was opened in the Olomouc Upper square. The stable theatrical life enriched enormously the cultural life of the city and en- couraged the development of publishing activities in the field of music journalism and publishing. The public debates on the artistic value of theater performances, on abilities of particular artists and on other subjects gained new quality after the 1860 October diploma because Czechs living in and around the traditional German town put pressure on theater directors and demanded Czech plays on the stage. The fights for the national repertoire on the stage of the Olomouc Provincial Theater are demon- strated in this essay in two contrary ways: at first, the introduction of Czech dramas into the German scene during the 1860s is discussed, then the intensive promotion of German operas during the 1880s and 1890s when internationally played Slavonic operas were performed in all theaters. The director Carl König (1862–1868) offered a contract to many artists who were able to speak both German and Czech, so he could open an independent subscription for the Czech public. The relatively tolerant atmos- phere allowed König’s company to give performances in both languages and connect the Olomouc theatrical life to the Prague Provisional Theater.

  • The Hyechra Club
THE HYECHRA CLUB The narrator has had a lively interest in The Hyechka Club since its beginning and believes that its history merits recording and dmu- menting in The Chronicles of OkZuhoma, Members of the Club in the past have been interested and its members today are interested in building and supporting a city and a state as cultural centers in which to rear patriotic and Clod-fearing children worthy of the loftiest ideals. Instead of a brief history, this band of music lovers is entitled to a fdsized, two volume publication to report ad* quately all that they have given to the education of young people along cdtural lines and to the wealth of Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma as expressed in the leadership and influence of the known and unknown contributors. Looking over the names of world famous artists that have appeared on its early programs and in its annual Spring Festivals, the words of Warner Van Valkenburg are a fitting tribute and introduction even to this brief history of Tulsa's pioneer organization of music lovers :l "I AM MUSIC. "I am the hymns of the Christian Martyrs in the catacombs; I am the songs of thanksgiving of the kneeling Pilgrime; I am the fugues of Bach, and the oratorios of Handel and Haydn; I am the magic flute of Momrt; I am the immortal symphonies of Beethoven; I am the throbbing mee- sages of Schubert and Schumann; I am the nocturnes of Chopin and the folk melodies of Dvorak; I am the rhapsodies of Linzt and the music- dramas of Wagner; I am the voice of Peter Tchaikowski, crying in the wilderness; I am Brahms and Richard Straues, and Verdi, fulfilling the command of destiny; yea I have breathed upon the harps of MacDowell and Cadman, and have sung of a new world in the west.
