Brooklyn, 1876-Mount Kisco, NY, 1956. Born Edith Helen Seymour, Helena originally sang as Helen Jenynge (I guess pronounced Jenning, her married name at that time) and recorded for Berliner in 1898 under that name. It was originally thought that “Jenynge” was some sort of Berliner misspelling, but she appears in at least one New York Times article in 1898 under this name. She subsequently sang as Edith Helena. In the early 1900s she appeared in Europe, apparently in concert, and recorded there for Beka. Upon returning to the U.S., she appeared in variety and vaudeville programs. One, at the Paradise Roof Gardens in Manhattan, 1903 included Miss Helena as well as “Aga” (the mysterious floating woman), Agnes Mahr (“the eccentric danseuse”), Riccabona’s horses (doing “tricks”) and Gilette’s dogs (performing “amusing, clownish stunts”). Such was show biz at the time. Helena had a few Victor recording sessions, beginning in 1903, and one for Edison cylinders, concluding her commercial recording career in 1921 with an Edison Diamond-Disc. She appeared in opera, most notably with the Century Opera Company in English language productions of various works, including the heroines in Madama Butterfly and Rigoletto. In later years, Helena worked from her home as a seamstress but in the 1950s she had a great success as a singer on the TV show, Life Begins at Eighty. 1807. 12” Blk. Pats.
