As lockdown eases we want to maintain value and availability to the highest standard possible.... so we are pleased to say that we will be introducing a core range of CO OP own label products to our store. Our supply chain partner Today’s group has made this possible. It allows us to improve our offering of ‘great value grocery’. We believe this compliments our already extensive range including the popular ‘Yorkshire’ goods we have available.

Interesting that on reviewing the last twelve months, the Council has received and passed comments on 55 planning applications, of which 19 related to trees in Upper Poppleton. 5 The intriguing story of our Village Green

When we moved into our house in Hodgson Lane 20 years ago, writes Bob Wood, we were fascinated by a requirement to obtain permission from Upper Poppleton Parish Council to gain right of vehicular access across the Village Green to our house. The Village Green in question is a small strip of ‘grass verge’ no deeper than two metres in front of our house. The AGM

After a year of lockdown the idea of a remote Annual General Meeting of the Parish council did not seem strange. Several members of the public joined the usual members of the council to hear the Chairman deliver a summary of the year’s work. It was reported that the planning committee had consid- ered several hundred applications for development around the village. Plan- ning is only one part of our responsibilities. The Parish Council is also re- sponsible for the upkeep of the woodland walk and many of the green areas the give the village its character. We all hope that next year the AGM will be back to normal and we will be able to meet members of the village face to face.

Sheep

It is always a delight and a sure sign of spring when we see sheep and lambs in the fields around the village. This year there have been sheep on several local fields not just the Moat Field. Sadly however there have been incidences of sheep worrying. This is not only concerning for dog owners but we must remember the financial cost to the farmer if his animals are either killed or have major injuries. Because of the various lockdowns walk- ing in the village has increased greatly and many of us have dogs that enjoy (and need) a daily walk.

Please remember to keep your dog on a lead when there are sheep about. Listed Buildings

Poppleton Parish Council has joined forces with Upper Poppleton to pro- duce a local list of special buildings. A small sub-committee has been set up and togeth- er with Grade II Listed Model Farm, Upper Poppleton York City C o u n c i l and York Civic trust to look at the village as a whole and note any build- ings and features of the village that are noteworthy. There are many buildings in both parts of the village that are already Grade II listed. It is not our intention to add to this list- un- less there are special circumstances or you feel that your property should be given a high level of protection for the future - but to recognise that some features (e.g. the signal box in Upper Poppleton and the river view in Neth- er) should at least be recognised as features of notable value.

9 POPPLETON ARTS SOCIETY 2021-2 Like most, we have had to mark time during these lockdowns, but members have been receiving copies (nine so far) of PASnotes: recommendations for on-line cultural activities, from films and books to virtual museums. To be as sure as possible of safety for all, we have decided to start our full programme in January 2022 (Tuesday 11th) with a talk by an expert on ‘The Art of Holbein’. Thereafter plans are in hand for talks about the Music of Mahler, and the work of Ruskin and J.W. Turner. There will be a grand launch for all members, old and new, on Friday December 10th, a talk
