L337 SOCCER MOMS CONCEPTIONS OF “HARDCORE” AND “CASUAL” IN THE DIGITAL GAMES MEDIUM by STEVEN BOYER Under the Direction of Ted Friedman ABSTRACT As digital games have become increasingly significant in the entertainment media landscape, the terms “casual” and “hardcore” have become the primary ways to describe gaming audiences, genres, and gameplay. However, these terms are saturated with outdated stereotypes involving gender, age, and class. Focusing on industrial discourse, this thesis examines this dichotomy, emphasizing areas of discontinuity and overlap to question why these terms have become so ubiquitous in gaming discourse and what functions they fulfill for a variety of groups including the industry, advertisers, and audience members. Ultimately, I suggest that these terms need to be replaced in order to move beyond restrictive stereotypes, proposing a new framework for digital games that takes into consideration user motivation, personal investment, and historical specificity. -

Blatter Artificial turf has been around now for several decades. It can be argued that artificial turf was originally developed to address the limitations of natural grass. However, the earliest versions were not designed for football and changed the game dramatically. Therefore, football never thoroughly embraced the idea of high-level competition matches on artificial surfaces. The breakthrough came when manufacturers started to develop surfaces specifically designed for football. Manufacturers have now developed a turf that mirrors real grass. In order to get away from the short, tightly packed matting of the earlier generation, nowadays, the concept is to produce longer and more thinly spaced tufts and most of the systems are infilled with sand for support and rubber granules to give bounce. This newest generation of artificial turf has proven to be the most favourable for football to date. FIFA realised that, as the game’s global popularity increases, so the climate plays a greater part in limiting its development. Players in countries at the extreme ends of the temperature range will not necessarily benefit from the predominanace of natural grass turf. With the deployment of football turf, FIFA has recognised the enormous benefits artificial pitches would bring to the global development of football, not only because artificial turf can be used in more extreme climates, but because where a pitch is used intensively it can be used almost 24 hours a day and seven days a week. -

An Exploration of the Nondiegetic1 in Soccer Video Games
Sociology of Sport Journal, 2009, 26, 67-88 © 2009 Human Kinetics, Inc. Starting at “Start”: An Exploration of the Nondiegetic1 in Soccer Video Games Steven Craig Conway University of Bedfordshire This article is a critical qualitative textual analysis of a selection of soccer video games, focusing on the representational and functional aspects of machine actions outside the game (Galloway, 2006) as illustrated by the “Introductory Video” and “Start Menu.” I analyze the figurative and ludic implications of these components comparatively, illustrating their crucial role in configuring audience expectations and pleasures for the game genre as well as for game play. By doing so I hope to illumi- nate how the socio-ideological values of sport video games (and video games in gen- eral) are not only exhibited through the main content of the game but also through something as simple as the start screen. This research concludes by examining what these nongame spaces have to tell us about representations of soccer in new media, and how these mediations affect our understanding of the sport’s culture. -
EA Unveils the Future of Soccer with FIFA Soccer 07 on Xbox 360; State-Of-The-Art EA SPORTS Engine Will Transform the Way Athletes and the Ball Move, Play and Feel
EA Unveils the Future of Soccer with FIFA Soccer 07 on Xbox 360; State-of-the-Art EA SPORTS Engine Will Transform the Way Athletes and the Ball Move, Play and Feel REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 2006--The future of soccer was unveiled today at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany when Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) revealed the dynamic new EA SPORTS™ engine that will appear in FIFA Soccer 07 on the Xbox 360™ system and lead the franchise into the future. Two years in development, the new engine is the single largest investment EA has ever made in the soccer business. The engine is poised to redefine the way sports videogames play and feel. A physics-based and data-driven technology, the engine delivers individuality of player movement, authentic athletic motion and an unprecedented level of responsiveness. "Get ready for the first real next-gen soccer experience. FIFA 07 on Xbox 360 will deliver athletes that move as fluidly, as realistically and as intuitively as athletes in real life," said Andrew Wilson, Producer for FIFA 07 at EA. "This engine is the most sophisticated sports technology we've ever produced -- it gives us the ability to transform soccer as it is played today but more importantly, it is a dynamic technology that promises to deliver new innovations for years to come." The new engine creates a decision-making layer in FIFA Soccer 07 that gives each individual player a "soccer brain" -- a level of intelligence never before seen in a videogame. Player characteristics are now based on brand-new traits and twice the number of attributes, so no two players move in exactly the same way.
