Hamacher Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW, 2052, Australia Email: [email protected] Of the hundreds of distinct Aboriginal cultures of Australia, many have oral traditions rich in descriptions and explanations of comets, meteors, meteorites, airbursts, impact events, and impact craters. These views generally attribute these phenomena to spirits, death, and bad omens. There are also many traditions that describe the formation of meteorite craters as well as impact events that are not known to Western science. Comets Bright comets appear in the sky roughly once every five years. These celestial visitors were commonly seen as harbingers of death and disease by Aboriginal cultures of Australia. In an ordered and predictable cosmos, rare transient events were typically viewed negatively – a view shared by most cultures of the world (Hamacher & Norris, 2011). In some cases, the appearance of a comet would coincide with a battle, a disease outbreak, or a drought. The comet was then seen as the cause and attributed to the deeds of evil spirits. The Tanganekald people of South Australia (SA) believed comets were omens of sickness and death and were met with great fear. The Gunditjmara people of western Victoria (VIC) similarly believed the comet to be an omen that many people would die. In communities near Townsville, Queensland (QLD), comets represented the spirits of the dead returning home. -

These functions are supported by existing services and infrastructure. All this occurs within a landscape framework. It is recognised that the landscape development of the site is a significant factor in establishing a distinct character that reflects the overall development philosophy and objectives as described in the Masterplan. The landscape masterplan prepared by Greening Australia in 2005 established a landscape approach ‘that incorporates and builds on the strengths of the Rapid Creek catchment’s unique plant communities that include riparian monsoon forest, eucalypt woodland, melaleuca swamps and wetlands”. The resultant landscape deliberately introduces international and national visitors to the beauty and diversity of the Top End environment and associated flora. In order to provide clear direction to future works within the precinct, it has been recognised that a ‘kit of part’ comprising distinct landscape treatments is required. -

Very little study has been done on the green plum, so this is an initial screening study of the functional properties and phytochemical profile found in the flesh and seed. The flesh was shown to have antimicrobial properties effective against gram negative (Escherichia coli 9001—NCTC) and gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus 6571—NCTC) bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy analysis shows that the antimicrobial activity causes cell wall disintegration and cytoplasmic leakage in both bacteria. Antioxidant 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) testing shows the flesh has high radical scavenging activity (106.3 ± 28.6 µM Trolox equivalant/g Dry Weight in methanol). The flesh and seed contain a range of polyphenols including gallic acid, ellagic acid, p-coumaric acid, kaempferol, quercetin and trans-ferulic acid that may be responsible for this activity. -

Various reasons have been proposed – inadequate technical and business expertise, insufficient planning and consultation, limited local demand for products and long distances to external markets, harsh seasonal conditions adverse to farming, limited irrigation water availability, competing community interests, and the laborious nature of the work under arduous conditions. This paper proposes a further reason and explores a new approach as an alternative to horticulture. Enrichment planting is a strategy involving the establishment of plants for food, medicine or other uses, in a landscape that is otherwise natural and largely undisturbed. The establishment of enrichment plantings of bush food and medicinal plants in bushland settings complements wild harvest, and yet as an alternative to the agricultural farming approach, it accommodates the important social and cultural interactions of value to Aboriginal people in collecting bush food and traditional medicines, while also generating a source of income. Through a review of the limited published information available and documentation of the current status in Australia, the use of enrichment planting is examined in the global context and its application to bush food and traditional medicine production for remote Aboriginal communities is explored. -

May they and their words always be remembered. Abstract Traditional Tiwi is a language isolate within the Australian language group, traditionally spoken on the Tiwi Islands, north of Darwin. This language exhibits the most complex verb structure of any Australian language. Altogether there are 18 distinct verb slots; 14 prefixes and 4 suffixes. They encode subject, object and oblique arguments, they inflect for tense, aspect and mood, the location and direction of events with respect to the speaker, and the time of day that an event takes place. They also take prefixes and suffixes denoting associated motion, can be argument-raised by a causative or detransitivised by derivational morphology, and can take incorporated nominals, incorporated verbs, and incorporated comitative or privative arguments. Traditional Tiwi has not been adequately described. Previous descriptions are limited and do not cover verb morphology with enough detail. This thesis brings together previous descriptions, early recorded data, and adds newly collected data and findings to produce an updated description of the language, with special reference to the verb morphology. I focus in particular on two aspects of the verb morphology: agreement and incorporation. The Traditional Tiwi agreement system of inflecting verbs shows a high degree of complexity due to the interactions between subject, object and tense marking. -

The Plan establishes different categories of action according to the degree of potential impacts (Section 9.5: Table 4 - Impact Assessment Procedures). All proponents must refer to the full explanation of these categories and the impact assessment process in the EIA Guidelines before completing the following. CATEGORY 1 ASSESSMENT If your proposal involves an action considered likely to have • no impact • or no more than a negligible impact on the Park’s environment and natural and cultural values • and no impact on Bininj/Mungguy ► COMPLETE KAKADU NP’S PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST, NOT THIS FORM Some examples of Category 1 activities: • Minor capital works e.g. maintenance, replacement repairing or improving existing infrastructure in its present form. • Regular/routine ongoing operations to implement prescriptions in the Kakadu NP Management Plan e.g. patrols, weed control or fire management. • Seasonal opening/closing of visitor areas. • Issuing permits for regular activities in accordance with the Kakadu NP Management Plan, e.g. land-based tours, camping, research.
