ARSSAR secretary Oldham reports they have kept him busy with new Sixteen-year-old Ginger Macfarlan of Siloappalmicat Spions.ri ngWelscom broe abugoarht d hMomcKissie ckna tional honors to Arkansas, representing Arkansas Society in the Sons of the American Revolution Oratorical Contest held in July in Sacramento, California. Macfarlan’s first place finish added $3000 to her college savings account. The Sons of the American Revolution began the oratorical contest in 1945. Participants must prepare and deliver from memory a speech pertaining to an event, personality, or document relating to the Revolutionary War and show a relationship to America today. Macfarlan chose the Boston Tea Party for her speech titled, “Saltwater Tea.” By her parents' report, Ms. Macfarlan is home educated and is the daughter of Dr. Kevin and Mrs. Laura Macfarlan of Siloam Springs. She is president of the Christian Home Educators of Siloam Springs home school high school group, is active in the First Baptist Church Revolution Student Ministry, and volunteers at the Manna Center. Earlier this year, she placed second in the 2008 National American Legion Oratorical Contest. In the summer of 3008 she also represented Arkansas at the American Legion Girl’s Nation and also at the NRA Youth Education Summit. She is the author of a weekly column in the Herald Leader, A Little Spice from Ginger. Arkansas Patriot - Page 4 Arkansas Society Midyear/Board of Governors Meeting October 18, 2008 Minutes The combined midyear/Board of Governors meeting of the Arkansas Society, Sons of the American Revolution, was called to order at 11:00 a.m. at the Western Sizzlin' Restaurant in Harrison, Arkansas, by President J. Troy Massey, with the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, led by Alternate Trustee William Cox, Salute tot the Sons of the American Revolution led by South Central District Vice President General Robert Grover and an Invocation by Society President Emeritus and Chaplain Bernard Barber. The Agenda was approved on motion from William Cox, seconded by David Hoss. In attendance were Vice President General Robert Grover, 13 active members and one member in process of reinstatement, as follows: J. Troy Massey, David J. Hoss, Sr., Dennis Boyer, Ernest Cashion, Bill Biggers, Eugene L. Wittlake, Harold L. Hunt, Joe Kerr, EuGene Smith, Glenn Railsback, Walter Mayberry, William T. Cox, Trent Cox and Bernard Barber. Crowley Ridge, Count Pulaski and General Lafayette Chapters were represented by three members each, Abraham van Buren Chapter by two members, and Jordan Milam and Bayou Bartholomew Chapters by one member each. Vice President General Grover addressed the Society with opening remarks. Compatriot Hoss reported that 92 Patriot burials in Arkansas have been marked and recorded, with plans to mark each with Global Positioning Satellite coordinates. Treasurer Railsback presented a financial summary projected for the period ending 12/31/2008 as including Total Receipts of $9,928.80 and Total Disbursements of $12,106.55, leaving an excess of disbursements over receipts of $2,177.75, incurred primarily as a result of funding for the Arkansas Post Memorial ceremonies in the amount of $1,447.87. The report was approved on motion of Compatriot Barber as seconded by Compatriot Cox.
