In Memoriam

Beth Musser Deceased 1-31-1992

Beth and her husband, H.A. Musser, had two boys before Beth started law school. Joel was one year old and Austin was three. Beth originally intended to attend Chase due to caring for the boys, but then applied to UC at the last minute and started off part-time. She decided to finish with her class, taking additional classes toward the end to make graduation. She was often seen around the school with the boys in tow whenever her sister/babysitter needed time off.

After law school, Beth set up office in her basement doing wills and deeds for church members and neighbors who couldn’t afford a lawyer. During law school and afterward, she clerked for Mayor Ted Berry who was on the Board of the Cincinnati Southern Railway. She continued working with Mayor Berry after school until her death.

Beth had received her diagnosis of melanoma before she entered law school and had successfully completed treatment to battle the cancer. After law school, at her 5 year check-up, it was found that the cancer had returned. She was brave in her final battle, holding strong to her faith in Jesus. Her biggest worry was who would take care of her boys. When at peace that H.A. was fully capable, she went home to the Lord on January. 31, 1992.

Austin, now 32, followed his mother’s passion for the law by attending William & Mary Law School. He is now a lawyer with FBT and is married to Meggin, who is also a lawyer. They live in Pleasant Ridge. Austin and Meggin have 2 kids, Elizabeth “Lizzie” (named after Beth) (6 months) and Michael (2 years).

Joel, now 29, majored in economics at Hillsdale College and worked for a couple of years at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance in Rookwood, where he met and married Nancy, a Xavier grad. He now works at Chase Bank in Montgomery, and recently passed his Certified Financial Planner credentialing exam. Joel and Nancy live in Kennedy Heights. They have a 15 month old, Joel, Jr., and twin girls, Natalie and Brianna.

H.A. remains close to Beth’s family from Kentucky. He married Rhonda 20 years ago, and had 2 more children with her, whom Beth’s family treats as their own.

In Memoriam

Murray Lerman Deceased 3-6-2006

Murray Lerman, our oldest classmate, an experienced financial advisor who became a grandfather during our first semester, died in March of 2006 at the ripe old age of 76.

A true father figure, Murray provided Section 6 with a good role model (and a little parental supervision) during our first year. Here’s a sample of his wisdom, a wonderful essay he wrote for The Restatement giving advice to “non-traditional students” like himself:

You will begin to feel the questioning stares of classmates and see the raised eyebrows of professors who wonder what in the world the admissions committee was thinking. One professor commented to me last year that he remembers when a woman was an oddity in his class, and now he has to deal with grandfathers.

Do not try to conduct yourself on the same life-style level as your younger classmates. You will find them brilliant and inexhaustible. You, however, will not be able to attend class most of the day, spend four hours at Woody’s, eat dinner, study into the early hours of the morning, get up at dawn, go to a job, and then start the process all over again.

Make friends among your younger classmates. Besides helping you rid yourself of the feeling of an outsider, you will find the association stimulating. You may find yourself acting as a substitute parent figure, so listen with sympathy to their social, sexual, and academic problems. Likewise, you are going to need their support as it gets closer to “making the grades.”

Above all, fight solemnity. For some perverse reason, there is a perception that if you are senior to your colleagues, you are required to act more serious and formal. Laugh! Humor is where you find it, and may be available in the most deadly class. Remember, all this shall pass into fond remembrance someday. –Mike Morley

In Memoriam

Dan Sherman Deceased July 2007

Dan Sherman was one of the most gentle men I have ever known. Gentle in spirit, gentle in his spoken word. Gentle in his manner of speaking. He was smart and funny. He was kind and inquisitive. He wanted to know about people, where they were from, about their families, about their lives before law school. What a loss to this world when we lost Dan Sherman.

–Geri Hernandez

Dan was a far better bicyclist than I, but over dozens of rides he never let me feel I was holding him back. Super fellow.

-Tom Seddon

In Memoriam

Greg Claycomb Deceased 4/20/2011

Greg Claycomb was one of the more outgoing members of that collection of strong personalities known as Section 6, and quickly made friends with just about everyone within a hundred yards. He was a member of Moot Court and wrote The Restatement’s “Faculty Spotlight” column, showing a real gift for capturing the human side of the professors he interviewed.

He also had a quick wit and a ferocious sense of humor. Greg was the guy who publicly declared before God, Professor Lockwood, and everybody else in our Con Law I section that I was the “Michael M.” in Michael M. v. Superior Court of Sonoma County, 450 U.S. 464 (1981).

–Mike Morley

Greg helped get me a job at Funky’s Blackstone Grille, and into the poker games there after hours. Those games paid for most of my second and third year!

During our last year of law school, like many of you, I signed up for on-campus interviews. The interview I was most excited about was with a 15-lawyer firm that practiced exclusively in the area of labor and employment law, as that was the area of law in which I was interested (thanks to Professor Murphy!). Before the interview, I was disappointed to discover that the firm was not in Ohio; it was in Jacksonville. I had no desire to leave Ohio...ever. I almost cancelled the interview because, as I explained to our career placement office, I did not want to move to Alabama. They politely told me that Jacksonville was in Florida, not Alabama. (Geri Hernandez was probably the one who told me Jacksonville was in Alabama; right next to the city of Delaware). I was not keen on moving to Florida either, but I went to the interview. I travelled to Jacksonville for my second interview – liked the city, liked the firm, and mostly I liked the fact that I would have the opportunity to practice exclusively labor and employment law. I accepted the job and moved to Jacksonville, absolutely believing I would return to Ohio after a few years with some great experience…

I’m still here! I thoroughly enjoyed practicing labor and employment law for 20 years. For the last 15 years of my practice, I was with Rogers Towers, P.A., a large Jacksonville-based full service law firm where I was the head of the labor and employment practice group. About 70% of my practice was litigation. For all of you golfers, one of the more interesting trials I had was representing the PGA Tour in a lawsuit filed by its Rules Officials, claiming they were entitled to overtime pay. Throughout the 2+ years of that case, I learned more about golf, golf rules, golf courses, green speeds, pin placement, hazards, etc., than you can possibly imagine! (The jury came back with a defense victory, otherwise I would not be talking about the case and would not have found it as interesting).

After 20 years of practice, and after much deliberation, I retired to join the ranks of “stay at home Moms?!” I prefer the title CEO of the house. The hours are longer and the pay sucks, but I have made the transition quite nicely. I have been very involved with community boards, such as The Hubbard House (domestic violence shelter and outreach) and Jacksonville Country Day School. I spend endless hours shuttling our boys around to school and sports, and I play tennis 2-3 times a week. I married my husband, Mark, in 1995. He has been with the ATP Tour (men’s professional tennis) since 1990, and is their CEO (Americas) and Chief Legal Counsel. Our son, Jack, is a junior and plays varsity basketball and AAU. Our son, Mark, is in 8th grade. He plays basketball, football, crew, surfs, guitar, and anything else he can fit into his gypsy lifestyle. As a family, we enjoy boating, spending time at the beach, cheering on the Jacksonville Jaguars, and attending University of Florida football and basketball games (yes, I married a “Gator”?!). I am and always will be an Ohio girl, and I can’t wait to see everyone at the reunion!

Please tell us about your life (professionally and personally) since graduation and email us a recent photo of yourself and family:

After graduation I practiced law in Cincinnati until 1992 before moving back to Chattanooga to

work in my family construction and real estate development business. I left my family business in 2000,

went back to the practice of law for a few years, and since 2006 have been with Signal Energy, a

general contracting design/build firm that designs and builds utility scale wind and solar farms for

independent power producers and utilities across the U.S. and Canada. We started as a relatively

small enterprise, and have grown to over 100 employees with a healthy client base. It’s a lot of fun and

I work with a great group of people. With my position, I have been able to travel to all but 2 states, all

but 2 Canadian provinces, and to South America, and I would not have had the opportunity otherwise. I

hope to work here until retirement. Through my two stints of actually practicing law, I learned that I am

much better suited to working in a business setting, and it has proven to be a great deal more

satisfying.

Personally, I have two children, a son and daughter, and am fast approaching being an empty

nester. My son, Baker, is a senior at Auburn, and my daughter, Riley, is entering the University of

Tennessee in the second week of August. Baker is majoring in Building Science and is in Auburn’s co-

op program. Riley will be majoring in 3-D art (sculpture) at UTK. I am immensely proud of them both. It’s sad to see your children leave for college, but also an exciting time as you watch all of your parenting efforts pay off (hopefully) in this last stage toward adulthood.

It hardly seems possible that 25 years have gone by since we were all together in law school.

There were so many good times and so much camaraderie. I think that most of us learned a lot about how hard we really could work, and the intense sense of accomplishment that comes with that hard work. I wouldn’t trade anything for those days.

A highly experienced attorney in the Preble-Butler County/Southwest Ohio Judicial System, Sam Borst comes from a background of eight years as a law enforcement supervisor and police academy certified instructor, twelve years as a Prosecuting Attorney, and now eleven years as a criminal defense/civil plaintiff's attorney, with over ten years as the City Prosecutor for Hamilton, Ohio, a City of sixty thousand, where he was the only Prosecuting Attorney in a Court which handled 17,000 cases a year. During this timeframe, Sam handled all of the criminal appeals, jury trials, bench trials, preliminary hearings, motions, discovery, and correspondence for the City. Sam is very attuned to the needs of single parents, persons going through divorce, and child custody battles, amongst others. Sam is a feared competitor amongst his colleagues, due to his natural ability to think on his feet, and deal with high volume, high stress situations, common to the criminal justice system and domestic relations court. Sam is respected by his colleagues as having a much higher degree of technical knowledge of criminal law than most area lawyers.

In his spare time, Sam is an avid hunter and fisherman. He also breeds, trains, and handles his AKC Field Champion Brittany bird dogs in AKC horseback field trials on a national level, with much success. Otherwise, he enjoys attending his son's athletic events.

Sam has been involved, primary with youth, in the communities of Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio, and now Eaton, Ohio ,where he resides:

Please tell us about your life (professionally and personally) since graduation and email us a recent photo of yourself and family: Following graduation from CU Law, I spent 7 great years with Vorys, Sater, Seymour & Pease in Columbus practicing in the energy and environmental law areas, doing litigation, regulatory compliance and, ultimately, M&A work. In 1996, Susan and I were engaged immediately after finishing the 100th Marathon. In early 1997, we picked up and moved to Boulder, Colorado. I became a partner in a regional law firm in Denver. Susan qualified and ran in the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials. Susan and I are the parents of two amazing kids, Sydney and Jack born in 2002 and 2005. I left the practice of law and joined the management team of two private equity-backed oil and gas exploration and production startup companies that we successfully sold in 2001 and 2005. Thereafter, I ran a small, publicly traded oil and gas exploration and production company in a turnaround situation. I am now with Artex Oil Company managing our Utica Shale assets in eastern Ohio and commute between Colorado and Ohio. Susan and I are very involved in our kids’ school (Boulder Country Day School), she the President of the PTA and I as a member of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Board. We are very involved in the kids’ sports such as swimming, baseball and basketball. Susan is now doing triathlons and has competed at a very high level in half ironmans. I occasionally find the time to jump on a mountain bike, ski or grab the fly rod and try to outsmart a trout with a brain the size of a pea – a contest at which I am only modestly successful.

My 3rd year of law school I interned with ProKids. I ended up working for them after law school

and became their first chief attorney when we went to staff. From there, I accepted an appointment as

a magistrate in Juvenile Court presiding over abuse cases. I will have 21 years as a magistrate in

October. I also sit on the board of ProKids Steps to Peace, Family Violence Prevention Project,

Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, and Hamilton County Child Fatality Review.

Katie is finishing up her master's degree in Sociology at Aberdeen University in Scotland. She loves

to travel-studied at Cambridge one summer and in Spain and Morocco. She also took a 3 day camel

trip in the Sahara Desert. She worked with Scottish Parliament on passing their recent Equality Law

and has been asked to help write and edit the educational material about the law to be distributed

throughout the country. All that time in law school as an infant gave her a huge sense of justice 

Kristopher got his degree in Criminal Justice thinking he would go right in to law school. He did great

on his LSAT (without studying) but decided he would rather teach so plans to get his masters in

teaching. Kyle attends UC and is getting his degree in computer engineering. Michael was an Anderson

Township firefighter but had a minor knee injury in a fire and the "simple surgery" to fix it resulted in a

staff infection the surgeon ignored that resulted in him developing osteomyelitis, spending 16 days in

hospital, 3 emergency surgeries and almost lost the leg. It's been 7 months since and he is much

better and even walking well but still can't go back to work yet. Kathy and family

Kelly Browne

Kelly on the “set” of SCPLL’s latest offering: a series of Photo-Novellas, examining everyday law issues, based on questions received from real library patrons. Check out the first episode, “Medical Marijuana,” at http://www.saclaw.org

Submitted by Kelly Browne.

After graduation Kelly moved to Seattle, where she practiced law for a couple of years1; had a baby2; got her Masters Degree in Library and Information Science3; had another baby4; moved to Tennessee to be a Reference Librarian at the University of Tennessee College of Law,5; and moved to Connecticut to be the Head of Reference at the University of Connecticut School of Law6 before finally landing in California and becoming the Assistant Director of the Sacramento County Public Law Library7, where she plans to stay8. Kelly’s boys are now in college, and she and her husband, Timothy C. King9 will celebrate their thirty-third wedding anniversary in December.

Kelly loves her job. She supervises the Reference Librarians and circulation staff, directs SCPLL’s outreach efforts, and oversees the day-to-day operations of SCPLL’s Civil Self Help Center.10 The CSHC is unique in that it run by the Library and staffed by Library employees, an attorney and a bilingual Spanish-speaking paralegal, and is the first, if not only, self-help center dealing solely with civil matters11 in California, and possibly, the country.

Kelly also reviews and edits all of SCPLL’s publications, including all the content on the Law Library’s website12, and the Library’s award-winning13 series of Step-by-Step Guides, which provide instructions for completing common legal procedures, including sample forms and fill-in-the blank electronic templates of those forms. “SCPLL is nationally known for its creative programs and methods of using technology to improve access to justice for self-represented litigants,” Kelly says. “I’m very proud to be a part of that.”

When asked if she misses academia, Kelly laughs. “Not a bit. I still get to write, and teach, only here I get to write about and teach what I want. I love being able to come up with an idea and then run with it, without having to go through the mind-numbing bureaucracy of academia. Not to mention the faculty meetings! In academic law librarianship, it is considered the unauthorized practice of law to tell someone which form to use, which I think is ludicrous! Here I work with the smartest, most talented group of people I know. Access to legal information is my passion, and I feel as if I make a practical difference in people’s lives here.” She hesitates, then smiles. “But I did like being called ‘Professor Browne.’”

After graduation I worked for Professor Cioffi putting together CLE programs around the State. After doing that for several months I rented some office space and hung out my own shingle. I’ve been in practice since. My practice concentrates on criminal defense representation in state and federal court at the trial and appellate level. I’ve had the opportunity to represent people in literally everything from speeding tickets to murder charges. I absolutely love my job. I never have a dull day, and there is almost always a new and different challenge. Since 2000 my office has been in The Citadel, on 8th Street in Cincinnati. Several of the attorneys who share space in the building are some of the best criminal defense attorneys in the country. It’s a privilege to get to work with them.

I went to the National Criminal Defense College in Macon., GA. I became a Life Member of the National

Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where I also served 2 terms on the Board of Directors. I was also a co- chair of NACDL’s Problem Solving Court Task Force and Pre-Trial Justice Task Force. From 2010 to 2014, I was also a CLE Seminar Co-Chair. I served on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense

Lawyers, and as Co-chair of the CLE and Strike Force Committees. On a local level I’m a Past President of the

Greater Cincinnati Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. In 2005, GCCDLA awarded me the Jim Looker

President’s Award for Excellence in Criminal Representation. In 2001, I became an adjunct professor at the Law School. (Hey, no laughing). I teach Forensic Science,

Criminal Pre-Trial Investigation, and Trial Practice – Criminal Defense. Several years ago UC and Chase jointly started an intern program in criminal defense. Through the program I’m also a Supervising Attorney to students in the Indigent Defense Clinic. In 2010 I won the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

I have two step-sons, Corey, 27, and Neiko, 22. They are both grown and out of the house. I also have a

3 year old grandson, Aiden. Having come into Corey and Neiko’s lives when they were 11 and 6, I never experienced the joy of an infant and toddler. It is the most wonderful experience of my life.

I know all grandparents say the same thing, but in this case it’s true, he is the most adorable child in the world.

I enjoy spending my free time with my four dogs. The smallest is about 100 pounds. I was only supposed to have three, but for some reason thought fostering a dog was a good idea. Only after it was too late did I realize I would never be able to let her go to another home. Thus I’m a canine foster failure.

I also am involved in transporting dogs. Kind of like an underground railroad for dogs. Typically the dogs come from high kill shelters, and are traveling to no kill shelters or rescues, who house and care for the dogs until they find forever homes. Usually each driver will transport his dogs(s) any where from an hour to two hours, where the next driver is met and the puppies exchanged. From there the journey continues. It’s a great feeling to play a small role in saving the life of a wonderful soul.

Cory’s is gone, but I still get out from time to time to see Richie and the Students. He still has just as much energy as he did over 25 years ago.

It’s hard to believe 25 years has past. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and catching up on what’s happened over the last 25 years. Jay and family

Please tell us about your life (professionally and personally) since graduation and email us a recent photo of yourself and family:

Upon graduating, I worked for about 4 years in Cincinnati at a firm that was then Helmer, Lugbill and Whitman (along with classmate Amy Larson). It was a small firm focusing primarily on employment related issues with an emphasis on False Claims Act litigation and representing whistleblowers in that arena. In 1993 I moved to Las Vegas and Bill Werner and I married the following year. (Yes that was our wedding picture that was featured in one of the reunion posts earlier!). When I was first in Las

Vegas, I practiced for about 4 years at the firm of Lefebvre and Barron, which is an insurance defense

firm. Not necessarily an area I found to be my cup of tea but the firm allowed me to have a relatively

flexible schedule which was wonderful as my two sons were born during that time and allowed me

some extra time with them.

As you may know, John Harper had also migrated to Las Vegas by now and after a stint in a law

firm began working for the Las Vegas Police Protective Association. In 1998 he asked me to join him

and for the next 16 years we worked side by side together as the two General Counsels for the

Association. The Association (the LVPPA) is the employee organization that represents the rank and

file police and corrections officers of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the City of Las

Vegas Deputy City Marshals and Municipal Court Marshals. It has been fascinating work over the

years. As General Counsel, my work focuses on participating in contract negotiations between the

Association and the LVMPD to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement setting forth the wages and benefits for our officers. I also represent the officers in disciplinary hearings before a variety of boards

and am regularly on call to represent officers who have been involved in “officer involved shootings” as there is an immediate homicide investigation that commences as soon as the shooting occurs. As you can imagine, this part of my practice has allowed me to see some of the more “interesting” areas of Las

Vegas that I am sure I would otherwise probably never have ventured into! The shootings normally

occur in the dead of night and once called out you can expect to be out for some 8-10 hours. The

Association recognizes the demand of on-call work as gives the attorneys a very flexible work schedule

to compensate for it, which has really been fortunate for me as a parent. The work has been very

rewarding over the years. Most of the officers I have the opportunity to represent are great men and

women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our communities. We recently brought in a third

attorney (the former elected District Attorney of Clark County). Sadly, my dear friend John recently left

to pursue some other career opportunities, but it was great to work with him all these many years. As

for me I plan on being here until I retire!

In addition to working at the LVPPA, I served for 6 years as a member of the Taxicab Authority here in Las Vegas - the last 3 years serving as the chairman of the board. The TA regulates the entire

taxicab industry in southern Nevada.

Personally, I mentioned before, Bill and I have two wonderful boys. Although we are no longer married, we have a pretty successful co-parenting relationship. Our oldest son Nick just graduated high

school and is on his way to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo this fall where he will be majoring in Aerospace Engineering. (Obviously he got my Dad’s and Bill’s brother’s smarts and heeded his father’s warnings

about the practice of law!) Nick is also a big runner and has been on both the track and cross country teams all 4 years of high school. Our younger son Joe is going into his sophomore year in high school

and though not the exceptional student his brother was, does pretty well himself. He has also picked up his Dad’s love of the trumpet and plays trumpet himself in the school’s marching band, concert band

and jazz band.

For me, I got married to a wonderful guy, Chris Collins, in 2007. Chris has been a police officer

with the LVMPD for 30 years now! He spent a good portion of his career in SWAT (13 years) where he unfortunately suffered a number of job related injuries resulting in a VERY bad back which sidelined

him from working in SWAT. Having to work a desk job, he ultimately found himself at the LVPPA as one of the full time officers assigned to the union, which is where we met. In 2006 Chris was elected to serve as the Executive Director of the Association, and in 2011 was elected for a second term. I expect

he will retire at the end of this term but it looks like he may continue to work on the side after that as the

lobbyist for the Association which is one of his current responsibilities.

Life has been an absolute adventure with Chris, who until we married had been a confirmed bachelor. We have a beautiful cabin in southern Utah where we fish and quad in the colorful mountains surrounding Zion and Bryce Canyon in the summertime and ski in the winter. We also have family in

Denver and Tahoe which allows us even more ski time on top of the cabin. We love to golf and travel and look forward to being empty nesters in the next few years - not because we won’t miss the kids terribly, but because our golf games could really use the extra attention!

I took up running about 4 years ago and have now run about 6 half marathons. This past fall I made the leap to the world of marathon running (yes that is 26.2 miles!!) and completed my first full marathon (the California International Marathon in Sacramento) in December of 2013 (time: 4 hours and 15 minutes). I guess it must not have been that bad as I am running another one next June in the Salt Lake City area of Utah.

I am very sad that I am unable to join you all at the reunion, but we have a conflicting engagement in Phoenix the same weekend. I have thoroughly enjoyed following the reunion blog and look forward to all the stories from the upcoming weekend. (By the way - I can’t believe the Woody’s

“Bar Review” plaques are gone!)

I have been doing tax work since graduation. After graduation, I began working in the

Cincinnati office of KPMG, one of the Big Four accounting firms. After nearly 3 years with

KPMG, I moved over to American Financial Corporation. After a couple of years at AFC, I

began working in the tax department at GE Aircraft Engines in Evendale. I started at GE in

October 1995 and have been with the company ever since then.

In May 1999, I accepted a transfer and moved out to Connecticut to work with GE’s financial

services businesses. In June 2010, I moved back to Cincinnati and am currently a Tax

Director at GE Aviation.

My career at GE has been very fulfilling.

While in Connecticut, one of my roles was providing tax support to GE’s leasing businesses

based in the US and in Europe. In this role, I made numerous trips to Europe ( and

Dublin, mostly). In a subsequent role, I had overall tax responsibility for GE’s Consumer

lending businesses in the US, Latin America and Canada and was able to travel frequently to

Toronto, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo While the travel was great fun, being in the financial services business in the middle of the financial crisis produced many stressful days and nights. I was fortunate when a tax position opened up “back home” and jumped at the chance to move back to Cincinnati. I have been back for a little over 4 years, and have loved every minute of it!

On a personal note, I have been divorced for over a year. My son Joseph will be going into his junior year at Ohio State, and my son Michael will be starting his junior year at St. Xavier High

School.

Law school represented a change in direction for me. I worked the previous 4+ years for an investment advisory firm in Cincinnati. In fact, I went to law school never intending to practice law but to get an education that would serve me well in the business world. Best laid plans and all of that . . .!

After graduation, I went to work for Strauss & Troy in Cincinnati and practiced corporate and securities litigation. I was with Strauss & Troy for 8+ years. My work was focused primarily in federal courts around the country. I had the privilege of arguing cases in Federal District Courts from California to New York and in many between the coasts also. I also was privileged to argue cases in many state courts throughout the country. As a result, I concluded that Ohio lawyers were among the most professional and courteous lawyers in the country.

In 1998, I left S&T to form an investment advisory firm, Anderson Hills Investment Advisors. AHIA grew to three partners and more than $75 million under management. At AHIA I was responsible for certain aspects of internal control and provided equity and option portfolio management services to individual and institutional clients. At AHIA we created and successfully ran Water Tower Capital, LLC, a Reg D offering for high net worth individuals. Water Tower Capital focused on options strategies and provided limited downside risk to an investor’s total portfolio.

I joined The Christ Hospital in 2010 and have worked here since. My work primarily focuses on quality and compliance projects for the physician division.

Bridget and I have been married for 24+ years. We have one son, Zak. Zak graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati where he was a 4-year member of the golf team. Zak is now beginning his sophomore year at Butler University in Indianapolis. Our family spends a fair amount of time at our place on Lake Cumberland during the spring, summer and fall where we boat, golf and lounge.

Bridget and I have been fortunate to travel frequently and have been to Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland and Italy as well as throughout a lot of the eastern United States. We have also taken the obligatory family vacations to Mexico and Hawaii.

In addition to work and play, I serve(d) on various boards in the Cincinnati area, including the IHCC board and the St. Xavier HS Booster board. I am a current reading tutor in the Cincinnati Public School system working with below grade readers and in general just being a friend in the school.

Below is a picture of me and Bridget taken this past spring in Pienza, Italy.

the law firm of Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn. I made Partner fairly quickly concentrating my practice in

children came with my husband -- two boys and two girls. Mike and I then had twins to round out our

Indiana. Our four older children live in other cities so currently; our day-to-day life revolves around our

Just an update on me:

I am still a Staff Attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. My husband is Michael, and we still live in Finneytown, where we have been for about 20 years. I have three boys, Michael Jr. (age 31), Dan (age 29), and John (age 23). Mike, Jr. works with my husband in electrical sales. Dan is married and is a chemical engineer for GE. John just graduated in chemical engineering from Ohio U. and took a job with Cree, Inc. in Raleigh, NC. My husband and I are now celebrating their independence (and OURS), although we do miss those high school baseball games and wrestling tournaments. We enjoy boating on the Ohio River and Cumberland Lake (we have a small 21-foot cuddy), golfing, and frequently going to GABP to see the Reds. I also enjoy singing and playing the piano for St. Vivian's church in Finneytown. I am so fortunate because I love my work as a staff attorney.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the '89 reunion because the Gallagher family is having a reunion at Lake Cumberland that weekend, and I am on the family's "planning committee." Although I cannot attend, please keep me on your correspondence list and I will be looking on Facebook for updates. So disappointed I cannot be there to see everyone again. I am sure it will be a great time!

My wife Mary and I met in 1995 and married in 1997. That was the beginning of our “Brady

Bunch”—my two kids and her four kids (all of whom participated in our wedding), and later “our”

daughter, Franny, to give us enough for a ball team. In 17 years we’ve coached, organized and

volunteered in or brought our kids to innumerable ball practices, games, matches, meets, plays,

recitals, etc. and wouldn’t trade it. Two of our sons are married, one is semi-engaged and another is in

a relationship with his motorcycle. Our three daughters are still pursuing their educations. By Fall

2015, we may have gone from full house to empty nest!

I practiced insurance defense for about 6 years after graduating and then lateralled to a

commercial firm in 1996, which merged with my younger brother Bud’s firm in 1997. We’ve been there

ever since. My practice has focused mainly on patent/trademark, products liability and general

commercial litigation in various courts across the US, but also risk prevention. I chaired the firm’s

Recruiting Committee for 7 years and am now on the Executive Committee. I’ve been involved in pro

bono, civic and bar organizations, and currently am a singer/cantor at noon mass at OLPH Church.

Janyce C. Katz

After 24 ½ years as an Assistant Attorney General at the Ohio Attorney General’s office, I decided to try to find out what I wanted to be when I grew up. During my years as an AG, I argued thousands of cases, most before various administrative boards, but thirty seven (mostly state and local tax) were before the Ohio Supreme Court and several before Federal District Courts. Most recently, I rewrote and wrote 144 new rules for The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, and rewrote most of the laws, now stalled in the GA as H.B. 410. I also advised boards, wrote some contracts and RFPs and reviewed others for legal status. The law was not my first career. At this point, I don’t know if it will be my last career or if I will be doing something else new, different and better. We will see.

I have a personal life these days, and I am very happy about it. I have attached a picture of my husband, Mark Glazman and me. I met him here. We have a small suburban ranch in a eastern suburb of Columbus called Berwick (just south of Bexley for those of you who know the area. Let me say how I met him. When I arrived in Columbus, I became very active in the general and Jewish communities. I have chaired committees for the OSBA and for the CBA, been a VP for a community television station, and one of my synagogues, President and board member of LWVMC and NCJW and other activities. Through volunteer work I did for the Russian immigrant community, helping to start and legally setting up a 501(c)(3) to better integrate them into the U.S. and to help the U.S. find out what skills and talents they had, I met and helped his aunt. It was perestroika, and he had been doing business in and out of the U.S. She told him to come quickly to meet me. To shorten a long story, it was close to love at first glance, and now I am married to a wonderful, wonderful man. Mark Glazman and I have been married for over 22 years. He has his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, and has focused on inventing and developing a product that controls asthma symptoms and stops molds without side effects to people. We also own a few pieces of real estate that he manages. He came with a son, now a graduate of the accounting program, Fisher Business College, The Ohio State University, and living on his own, independent of us. Now I am doing what ever legal work comes my way and trying to think what I will do next. As you know, I have reinvented myself before. That was law school. So, who knows what the future will bring. I never would have imagined living in Columbus, Ohio for 25 years, let alone loving it and loving being part of various communities in it. The next steps are coming. After two bouts of lymphoma, the last one 14 plus years ago, I know that life is special and wonderful. I treasure every day and try to remember to treasure the minutes, even the irritating ones.

In 1996, the company was sold to a private equity firm. I then went to work for that firm, specifically handling insurance and related risk matters. After subsequent acquisitions, and then mergers with affiliated companies, I was promoted into a job that required travel to our operation locations throughout the US. That job necessitated too much travel, and time spent away from my family; I left the company in 2001 and became a full- time stay at home mom. When both of my children went off to elementary school, I became a substitute teacher and a volunteer at our church. I am now working part-time as the Administrator at our church, where I handle administrative and financial responsibilities. My husband Mark and I have been married for 21 years. Our oldest son begins his freshmen year at UT-Chattanooga next month, and our younger son will begin his sophomore year of high school next week. Our family enjoys golf and travel – in the past few summers our focus has been on states west of the Mississippi River, including recent trips to San Francisco, Puerto Rico, Denver, Phoenix and Santa Fe. It is our goal to visit every state and US territory! I am sorry that I cannot attend the reunion. We are moving into a new home the weekend of the reunion . . . it was supposed to be ready earlier, but as they say: “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Hope everyone has a great time and I wish you much fun! Thanks to everyone – especially Michael Morley, Kandy Foley and Betsy Wood (and everyone else on the Reunion Committee!) for all of the work done to organize the reunion. I was already a commissioned Air Force officer while attending UC and upon graduation I went on extended active duty as a Judge Advocate; and no I didn’t fly jets. I did however experience a quite varied practice, in many different locals, as a military attorney over the years. I have been stationed in Missouri, Ohio, Germany, and Texas with the addition of my unit having been sent to a variety of places to include Croatia, Slovakia, England, “the desert,” and Congo. My Air Force practice has had me be a criminal prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney, the equivalent of a city attorney, the managing partner of a small law firm, an environmental attorney and the Professional Development Program Manager for all Air Force legal professionals. I retired from the Air Force in 2011 and I am now working as a civilian attorney for the Army at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. My practice is in federal sector Labor & Employment law. I defend the Army in discrimination complaints, discharge of employees under current civil service laws, union matters and provide litigation support to San Antonio U.S. Attorney's office. I live with my wife Lisa in New Braunfels; the home of Schlitterbahn rated the best waterpark in the U.S., just northeast of San Antonio. Lisa is a hairdresser and likes to say she is making the world beautiful one person at a time, and although she is still trying with me I do like the free haircuts. We are part time empty nesters as all the kids are in college and periodically come home. That does give us the opportunity to travel and we have in the past couple of years taken full advantage of the lower costs of just two on the go. We have visited the Caribbean several times; North Carolina, Colorado, Virginia, DC, Maryland, Tennessee and we have a Mediterranean cruise planned for next year.

Despite all odds, and random comments to the contrary, I find myself still practicing at the firm of KMK where I started after law school. After working in the bankruptcy area for a few years

(remember the economy was #*!@&$* in those days), I settled in as a commercial real estate attorney. I made full partner in 1999, and got my title license around that time. I married Emily in 1990 and we lived in OTR for several years, moving to East Walnut Hills when it seemed like we should get around to having some children. Other than marrying Emily and having our three boys, my proudest achievement has been getting elected to the American College of Real

Estate Lawyers in 2009 (during the third real estate slump of my career). Our family enjoys lacrosse, baseball, opera, and travelling. I also enjoy home improvement projects, which are numerous in a 150 year old house, and drinking beer of all types.

Ken Lawson

“Anyone who doesn’t believe in second chances, or the concept of redemption, hasn’t met Ken.”

– Professor Randall Roth, William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

Many of you know that our classmate Ken Lawson got into some trouble a few years ago, lost his law license, and went to prison, but you might not know the rest of the story. It’s an inspiring one, a story that illustrates how (to borrow a phrase from the man himself) “God can make a message out of your mess.”

I’ll try my best to relate it here.

After graduation, Ken worked as an associate in one of the big firms downtown before opening his own law office. He had an eclectic mix of clients, from celebrities (“Ickey” Woods, Deion Sanders, Peter Frampton) to poor people he represented pro bono. He was what they call a zealous advocate, accent on the zealous, seemingly always at the center of any high profile case, especially when there was a racial issue involved.

By any objective measure, Ken was highly successful, but the trappings of success–the high dollar cars, the nice house, the interviews on the morning news programs, the two-story “Law Dog” billboard, all the flash and flamboyance–weren’t filling what he called “the hole in my soul.” Then, he injured his shoulder working out and was prescribed Oxycontin–which he became addicted to. From his work as a criminal defense lawyer, he knew people who knew where and how to get drugs, and his habit eventually reached $1,000 a day. He started stealing from clients and running a fake prescription scheme to maintain it.

When the scheme fell apart, as these things always do, Ken went into detox, and–well, I’ll let him describe it:

…for 45 days, the only way I could stop shaking was to take three or four hot showers a day. I would put a chair in there and just sit until the hot water ran out. I was hopeless. Hopeless.

My first day sober in years was Feb. 1, 2007. My drug habit was so expensive that I had depleted all of our money and was stealing from the client trust account to support my addiction to painkillers. When I got out of detox, our house was in foreclosure, my law license was about to be suspended, I was being investigated by the DEA, the kids’ tuition had not been paid, all of the rotten stuff I did and the rotten person I had become was all over the news for months, and I was looking at going to prison. I’m not sure this is exactly the right way to phrase it, but this is the point where the miracle started to happen. Ken’s wife Marva could have given up on him, and who would blame her if she had? Ken could have given up on himself, or continued to blame others for his problems. The whole thing could have simply ended up as one of those sordid tales in Ohio State 3d of a high-flying lawyer brought low by fast living and an overclocked ego.

But there was another force at work. My [AA] sponsor kept telling me that God had me right where I was supposed to be. The kids and I were living in my mother’s house in my old bedroom. Boy, was I being humbled; and, looking back, I needed to learn some humility. Through detox, and prison, and afterward, Ken’s sponsor pushed him to do an honest self- assessment.

The easy answer to what happened is alcohol and drugs, But the honest answer is that I was off track way before I took my first drink or drugs. My thinking about what life was about was way off track. I thought it was money, things, power, prestige. I kept chasing that stuff and none of it could fill that hole in my soul. . . . The truth is, I ended up hitting bottom as a direct result of choices I made. I had to learn that blaming others for my problems keeps me from seeing the truth about myself. While all this was going on, Marva, who’d finished her medical degree in 1994, moved to Hawaii to take a job with the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center as a child psychiatrist. (Six months ago, she left WCCHC to go to work for the Air Force.) Ken mowed lawns to raise the money for the plane ticket to follow her. When he got there, Professor Randall Roth of the University of Hawai’i law school invited Ken to speak to his Professional Responsibility class.

It was here that Ken completed his journey from “mess” to messenger. He gave a talk about substance abuse and disciplinary rules–and about the meaning of life and the folly of storing up one’s treasures in the wrong place. Professor Roth and his students were profoundly moved.

Ken and family

The good professor worked to get Ken hired by the law school as the office manager of its “Innocence Project.” Ken is now an “Associate Faculty Specialist” and teaches Criminal Procedure, Criminal Law, Professional Responsibility, Evidence, and The Business of Law Practice. He seems to be quite good at teaching and reaching his students–this spring, the graduating 3Ls invited him to give the address at their hooding ceremony.

If you want to be happy for an hour, buy a steak. If you want to be happy for a day, go play a round of golf. You want to be happy for a week? Go on a cruise. You want to be happy for a month? Buy a new car. You want to be happy for a year? Hit the lottery. You want to be happy for a lifetime? Be of service to others and help somebody along the way.

I started my legal career by spending three years in the Hamilton County Public

Defender’s Office. In 1992 I accepted a position as a magistrate in the Hamilton County

Domestic Relations Court and I’ve been there ever since. I could not have asked for a better

job. Although many (maybe most) lawyers avoid a DR practice like the plaque, I find it to be

very satisfying. It’s my job to help people navigate through very difficult situations and hopefully

come out at the end with as few scars as possible. And it never gets boring. As soon as I

think I’ve heard it all, I just call the next case! Of course, my biggest joy has been my kids.

Jeremy was around when we were in law school. (He idolized Pat Brown). I think he was 8

when we started school. He is now thirty-five, married, the father of the most adorable two year

old daughter, and (surprise, surprise!!) practicing law in Toledo. My daughter Samantha was

born about a year after graduation. She is now 23 years old and . . . (wait for it) . . .is a 2L at

the University of Cincinnati College of Law. She will be around school the weekend of our

reunion so if you see her please say nice things about our school (and me if you remember

anything)!

In addition to my day job, I also taught Business Law at Cincinnati State for 20 years,

one night a week. It gave me a new perspective by standing on the other side of the classroom

and honestly, I really enjoyed teaching. Maybe that will be my next career. I have been honored to be able to give back to my community and profession by sitting on many boards, including the Ohio Association of Magistrates, the Wyoming Alumni

Association, and the Temple Sholom board of directors. I’ve taken advantage of other opportunities to serve the public and find that it’s really true that when you volunteer you receive more than you give.

I want to thank the reunion committee for making this weekend happen. It’s been wonderful reading about what everyone has been up to for the last 25 years. Honestly, I’ve been worried through the years at what appeared to be a high number of our classmates who were subject to disciplinary actions, but now I am equally awed by the number of our classmates who have become superstars! I’m really proud to have been a member of this class.

Now approaching our 25th anniversary, Roberta and I live in Medina, Ohio, which is one county south of Cleveland and one county west of Akron. Medina is the epicenter of the commercial beekeeping industry and the real-world prototype for the fictional universe of Funky Winkerbean. In the 1850s, it was a major junction point on the Underground Railroad, which is a point of civic pride to this day.

I've been with Brennan, Manna & Diamond in Akron since 2003. I'm in the estate planning practice group, and also serve as commissioner of the office fantasy football league. Roberta works at the office of a local psychologist. The two of us report directly to the head of the household, Cookie the Dog, who seized power in a coup d'etat in 2005 and rules over us with an iron paw. Cookie also provided the pen name under which I moonlight as a wannabee automotive journalist for Amazon's "Car Lust" weblog.

P.J. is a Computer Engineering major at the University of Akron. He'll finish his bachelor's degree this coming year, and his masters the year after that, and plans to streak straight through and get a PhD. As of June 30, he is engaged to Kaley Franks.

Alex will be a Mechanical Engineering major at the University of Evansville this fall. Go Purple Aces!

As detailed on the reunion website, I made contact with my birth family six years ago and picked up three sisters (Chrissy, Linda, and Janie) to go with the one I grew up with (Mary Rose).

“In the middle of Huntington, West Virginia, there is a river. Next to this river, there is a steel mill. And next to the steel mill, there is a school. In the middle of this school, there is a fountain. Each year, on the exact same day, at the exact same hour...... the water to this fountain is turned off. And in this moment, once every year...... throughout the town, throughout the school...... time stands still.”

These are the opening lines to the movie “We Are Marshall.” The movie tells the story of the rebirth of Marshall University and my current town of Huntington, West Virginia in the aftermath of the tragic 1970 plane crash which took the lives of 37 members of the Marshall University football team. This story is very much alive in Huntington as I am reminded anytime my undergrad alma mater plays Marshall. Miami is still hated here because it is accused of running up the score to 66-6 against the highly overmatched Marshall team (the “Young Thundering Herd”) which played the 1971 season without those lost in the plane crash. This was also reinforced when a student reporter for Marshall University paper suggested the town should get past the crash and end the annual ceremonial shutting down of the fountain on the anniversary of the crash. I believe the student was run out of town.

The opening lines of the movie also relate to my life since graduation from law school as I have followed the Ohio River to do work for various steel mills. First, I spent half a decade at the law firm Buchanan Ingersoll where I practiced Labor and Employment for companies such as US Steel and Allegheny Ludlum. I then returned to Cincinnati where I recruited AK Steel as a client while at Dinsmore & Shohl before going in house for a decade at AK Steel. At AK, I spent time as Labor Counsel and in Human Resources. After a brief stint as a Labor and Employment law partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister, I returned to the world of steel as Vice President of Administration for Steel Dynamics’ wholly owned subsidiary Steel of West Virginia, Inc. This job, which I have had for the last six years, combines many of my former roles as I am responsible for Safety, Environmental, Labor Relations, and Human Resources. Notably, SWVA’s Huntington steel mill is the very mill mentioned in the above quote from “We Are Marshall” and has a prominent role in the movie.

I have two children – 16 year old son Luke and 15 year old daughter Clare. Luke is into anything car related and Clare is my budding young artist. The three of us will spend the week prior to our re-union in New York City for our city summer vacation. We just returned from our country vacation whitewater rafting, rock climbing, zip lining and rappelling from West Virginia’s New River gorge.

After law school, I worked for the U.S. Department of Labor in the Office of the

Administrative Law Judges doing Black Lung Law. In 1991, we moved to Columbus so I could begin working for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, the nonpartisan bill drafting and research arm of the Ohio legislature. I've been there ever since. We draft legislation for both houses and both parties and provide research that isn't trying to further a political agenda. The nonpartisan aspect of the job really appeals to me – law school taught me to see both sides of issues. At LSC, I've worked in a wide variety of areas, including tort reform, concealed carry, and labor law. That's been nice, as it keeps the job fresh. I currently am the Division Chief of the Insurance, Commerce, Labor, and Housing Division. The job suits me, and I feel that I get to contribute to the process: if I do my job well, Ohio runs a little more smoothly.

Shari and I married in 1990, and we have two sons. Kevin (20) is a rising junior at

Rensselaer Polytechnic in Albany, NY, where he is studying Computer Science and Cognitive

Science. Brian (17) is a rising high school senior and plans on studying Biology, probably at

Ohio State.

Outside of work, I've been involved with the Cub and Boy Scouts, which has let me do things I wouldn't have done otherwise, like hiking parts of the Appalachian Trail and sailing in the Florida Keys. I've held a number of roles and have stayed involved even though my sons have graduated from the program. In my spare time, I also enjoy hiking, woodworking, and genealogy. (I even have an ancestor who was an Irish stereotype!)

Please tell us about your life (professionally and personally) since graduation and email us a recent photo of yourself and family:

After graduating from law school I pursued one of my dreams of working as a ski instructor at a resort in Colorado. I waited in Cincinnati for the Ohio Bar results and, after getting the great news from Jay Clark in an early morning phone call that I had passed, set about preparing for my adventure in the mountains. After the swearing-in ceremony in Columbus I packed up and headed to Keystone Resort. I had a wonderful season in the mountains and loved it so much I eventually obtained my license to practice in Colorado. I have not yet used it but am keeping it in the event I decide to head back when I retire from the FBI.

A few weeks after returning to Ohio from Colorado I received yet another “good news” phone call from Jay, who told me he had learned that the Clermont County Prosecutor’s Office had an immediate opening in its County Court (now Municipal Court) division. Classmates Darrell Hawkins and Todd Stoffel, who also served as assistant prosecutors in the office, had evidently given me decent references as I was hired the day following the interview. It was great to work alongside Todd and Darrell during my seven years in the office. (I had only planned on staying there for two years but loved the office and work.) A year or so after joining the prosecutor’s office I met my future wife, Karen, through friends.

After handling misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases for about two years I moved over to the felony trial division where I handled a full range of cases, from drug trafficking to homicides. During this period I also taught pre-law courses on a part-time basis at Thomas More College and served as the attorney-advisor to the college’s mock trial program.

While serving as an assistant prosecutor I worked with several FBI Agents on joint investigations and decided I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming an Agent. I had some doubts about pursuing this opportunity due to my age (32), and the fact that I was still enjoying my work at the prosecutor’s office. Moreover, during the hiring process my wife and I learned we were expecting our first child. However, my wife, colleagues, and friends were very supportive of my decision to head to the FBI so I wrapped up my career in Clermont County on a Friday afternoon in June 1997 and two days later reported to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, to begin the training program for Special Agents.

The good news is that not only did I complete the training program, but I made it back to Cincinnati with just a few hours to spare for the birth of my son, Ryan. Unfortunately, I had to head back to Quantico after just a few days at home but he and Karen were able to join me at Quantico for my graduation a month later.

When I joined the FBI I knew that the chances of going back to Cincinnati were slim, but I was hoping we would be assigned to an office that offered a good quality of life for a young family. Although we knew little of Kansas City when I received my orders, it proved to be a wonderful place to live and work. Karen continued with her career as a CPA and kept things on track at home while I began my career as a “Street Agent.” Our daughter, Anna, was born in 1999 while we were living in Lenexa, Kansas.

While assigned to the Kansas City Field Office I worked on organized crime and national security squads, and also served as the office’s Chief Division Counsel. In that capacity I provided legal and policy guidance to division personnel and management on a wide range of issues. Those years proved to be very challenging as I was the sole in-house attorney for a division that covered two-thirds of Missouri and all of Kansas. (Most offices now have at least two in-house attorneys.)

In 2007, because of my interest in the FBI’s international work, I joined the FBI’s Global Initiatives Unit, which is based at the FBI’s data center in West Virginia. The unit’s mission is to facilitate the acquisition and exchange of biographical and biometric data relating to terrorists and transnational criminals with foreign partners. As head of the team that covered Latin America I spent considerable time deployed to South America, Central America, and Mexico. I also traveled to other countries as needed, including Ukraine, Morocco, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Abu Dhabi.

Since my days as a New Agent Trainee one of my professional goals was to go back to Quantico to serve as a legal instructor. When the position opened up in 2009 I applied and was fortunate to have been selected. Karen, the kids, and I moved into our home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on the same day as one of the two “blizzards” the Mid-Atlantic Region saw that winter.

As a member of the Legal Instruction Unit I provide instruction to New Agents, personnel from FBI Headquarters, and police officers from around the globe. I have also been fortunate to have been able to continue pursuing my interests in working with foreign police agencies, and over the last several years have traveled to Kosovo, Italy, Brazil, and Ghana to provide legal instruction. Earlier this year my family joined me on one of my trips to Siracusa, Italy.

My family loves living in Virginia and we do our best to explore the many historic, cultural, and natural points-of-interest the Mid-Atlantic Region has to offer. Because of the great universities in Virginia we are inclined to stay here until I retire, unless, of course, the Rockies again lure me out West in which case I will “dust off” my Colorado license and see what opportunities may be available there.

Within a month after taking the Ohio Bar exam in July 1989, I was back in Pakistan,

working for Occidental Petroleum’s Legal Department in Pakistan. Subsequently, I worked for

Occidental’s Legal Department until March 1999, in Islamabad (Pakistan), Bakersfield

(California) and Doha (Qatar), respectively. From 1995 to 1999, I was Occidental’s Doha based

General Attorney and Compliance Officer for the Middle East Region, and I worked on projects

covering Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Syria, UAE and Yemen. In April 1999, I moved back to

Islamabad, to start my own oil and gas law practice. Within few years, my law firm was

recognized as the top oil and gas practice of Pakistan by Asia – Pacific Legal 500. My clients

included Occidental Petroleum, BP, OMV, Government of Pakistan and more than dozen other

petroleum companies, and I covered projects in Pakistan, as well as Afghanistan, Iran and the

Arabian Gulf. When war on terror started spilling into Islamabad in 2006, I decided to move back

to the USA, however, with my Pakistan passport, immigration to USA did not appear to be the

best option. Therefore, I applied for Canadian immigration and started looking for an expat job

outside Pakistan immediately. In mid- 2006, I moved to Bucharest (Romania) as part of

management team of Petrom (Romanian national oil company), which was acquired a year

earlier by OMV (Austrian company), my client in Pakistan. My task was to close Petrom’s offices

in India, Iran and Tanzania, sell unprofitable assets in Kazakhstan and open an office in Turkmenistan. Later, in 2008, I moved to OMV’s head office is Vienna (Austria) as BD &

Commercial Manager for the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In 2010, I moved to

Calgary (Canada) as an immigrant, and started Canadian Rockies Energy Inc, a consulting company focused on developing oil and gas business for Canada/ US based clients in Central

Asia and Eastern Europe. During the last 4 years, I have worked on projects in Albania,

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Montenegro, Pakistan, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, for multiple clients, including MNP Petroleum Corporation, a TSX-V listed junior petroleum exploration company, for whom I am also part time General Counsel.

During my career, I have also published 8 books and more than 20 papers on oil and gas laws and policies – and made presentations at petroleum forums all over the world. In addition, I

have also taught International Business law and Petroleum Law courses at law schools in

Pakistan as a Visiting Lecturer, for 6 years (2000 – 2006).

On the personal front, I got married to Momenat (Mona) in Pakistan, in April 1993. Mona until

recently was only a home maker taking care of our two (2) daughters (Hanna and Sarah).

However, 2 years ago she decided to go back to school, and last month obtained a

Professional Cooking Diploma from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Calgary, and also

passed her Alberta Exam for Chef. We may now open an international café in Calgary, also.

After graduation I went to Australia to work for Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks. I was met at the airport by the managing partner, Ian Renard, named that same week as the most highly regarded corporate solicitor in Australia. And a nice guy: I spent my first week with his family and came to appreciate cricket when we stayed up all night watching Australia beat England at Lords in London. After 17 years on the waiting list, I became a reserve member of the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2006. Still waiting for that full membership . . .

In July 1990 I met Robert, part of the firm’s tax group. (He was put down for the Cricket Club at birth.)

Professionally, through the 1990s my game was investment fund design. I was also named Title Editor of Title XXII of The Laws of Australia (ThomsonReuters’ legal encyclopaedia). By 2000, however, I was “law-ed out” and took the job of director of the 2001 Asia-Pacific AIDS Congress, and followed that with the 2004 World Health Promotion Conference.

Both had thousands of delegates and lots to organise. There was a minor diplomatic kerfuffle when at the opening of the AIDS conference I stepped in front of the Queen of Bhutan to clear her path. She was quite the sweetheart, so it must have been one of the “entourage” who took offense. Isn’t that the way?

Since 2005 I’ve run The Bendigo Trust, managers of a bunch of public assets in the goldfields north of Melbourne. There’s a tramway and a workshop where we provide parts to the San Francisco MUNI and other US vintage trolley operators, and do complete rebuilds for Melbourne’s tram system (the world’s largest). There are old gold mines—Bendigo is built on more than 6000 mine shafts—including one where we run underground tours, a working Chinese temple, a science centre and planetarium, and an old gasworks. We have 80 staff and about the same in volunteers. I love it.

I played rugby socially until 2008 when accumulated damage did me in. I still cycle, and between the two conferences I rode between Sydney and Melbourne, Charleston and Montreal, Land’s End to John o’Groats and London to Paris. A big fan of Australian Rules football, I barrack for St Kilda (at 3 wins and 9 losses they are currently hugging the bottom of the AFL league ladder).

Rob is now a barrister, working in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. He barracks for Melbourne (4 and 8, their most promising start in a decade!). We got married in California in 2013.

After leaving law school, I served as law clerk for the honorable Ann Marie Tracey, Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas. In that position, I met the late Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who was then Cuyahoga County’s Prosecuting Attorney. Subsequently, I accepted a position as one of Prosecutor Jones’ 200 Assistants, and I’ve had the privilege of maintaining the position. As a career Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, I’ve worked for 3 elected officials. I have handled Preliminary Hearings, worked in the Child Support Enforcement Unit, the Juvenile Justice Unit, the General Felony Unit, and the Major Trial Unit. I am an experienced litigator, having tried, successfully, all levels of felonies, including capital murder, and have to my credit numerous successful appeals. In 2002, I was promoted into Office management. In that capacity, I have served as Director of the Office’s Early Intervention Program (a first-offender drug intervention program), taught at the Cleveland Police Academy, managed the Juvenile Justice Unit, the General Felony Unit, and my current assignment, the Domestic Relations Family Support Enforcement/Interstate Unit. I am a longstanding member both of the Office’s Capital Review Committee and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Professionally, there have been many special moments, but one in particular was serving on and helping implement the nation’s first Fugitive Safe Surrender. The goal was to make the community safer by reducing the risk to law enforcement officers, who pursue fugitives; the neighborhoods in which fugitives hide; and to the fugitives themselves. The approach allowed fugitives to turn themselves in, in a comfortable atmosphere—a church, temporarily turned into a courtroom. The effort was collaborative and successful, with many partners. In the 4-day effort, 850 persons turned themselves in, with 340 felony cases processed, including high-level felonies. When it’s all said and done, I’m glad I did law school!

Personally, I am single—again—and that’s subject to change. I don’t have children— and that’s probably not subject to change!! My dad and I live together. He’s now 96, and I’m grateful for every day he’s still here with our family. My 3 siblings all have children—and 1 even has grandchildren—and that’s an adventure! I volunteer at a homeless shelter. I’m involved with my neighborhood and serve the community through my church. I enjoy excellent health, and remain high-energy. In the summer, I cycle 40 – 50+ miles/week. I still enjoy learning about other cultures through firsthand experience. Last year I spent time with Israelis in Israel. I live a privileged life. I am so very grateful to God, my Source, Who has provided me with life, and then more rich opportunities than is possible to express here.

I wanted a career doing research and writing, and specifically wanted to be a judicial clerk.

After graduation, I clerked at the Ohio 12th District Court of Appeals in Middletown for about 2

years before Mike got a job in Columbus and we moved from Cincinnati. I clerked at the 10th

District in Columbus for a few years before our first child, Kevin, was born in 1994 and I decided

to take some time to be an at-home mom, my career for about 8 years. When our second child,

Brian, entered kindergarten in 2002, I was able to return to clerking at the 10th, after which I got

a job as a staff attorney for Colley Shroyer & Abraham, a small personal injury firm in German

Village. I have been there for about 8 years, drafting the firm’s briefs and memoranda, among

other tasks, but always looking to get back to state service. This past spring, I applied for a

position as legal counsel to the Ohio Constitutional Modernization Commission, and just learned

that I got the job. I will start on July 28, so I am very much in transition at this point. I’m looking

forward to this opportunity to serve the state and to be part of Ohio legal history as the

Commission reviews and makes recommendations for changes to the Ohio Constitution.

Although we sometimes miss our hometown of Cincinnati, Mike and I have enjoyed Columbus,

which, after 23 years, is home, and has been a great community for our boys. Neither son has

chosen law: Kevin is majoring in Computer Science and Cognitive Science at Rensselaer

Polytech in New York, and Brian wants to be a biologist and is thinking of Ohio State.

Have been employed for almost 25 years with the U.S. Small Business Administration,

Office of Disaster Assistance (SBA ODA). Recently worked for 8 years in the Fort Worth, TX

office after 15 years working in Niagara Falls. In December of 2014 I was able to return to

Western NY and work from our Buffalo, NY office. SBA ODA makes low interest loans to

homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes after federally declared disasters. From 1996-

2007 my duties were more managerial than legal, and I was happy to return to a primarily legal

advisory role in 2007 after managing the Legal Department during Hurricane Katrina (during

which we went from a staff of about 100 to 1350, including about 450 attorneys). I currently

serve as the designated Ethics Official for all of SBA-ODA, and fill my days with projects,

research and other ad hoc and random assignments. I married for the first time in 2004. Leslie

is a Buffalo area native, and we were both happy to get back here in time to celebrate our 10

year anniversary in September. My only other responsibilities extend to two cats, Motu and

Moorea, who, as children go, are just about my speed!

I moved to Las Vegas the day after hooding and I've been living here since. And not in a hotel.

For the first 12 years after law school, I worked in-house for Mirage Resorts and Boyd Gaming,

handling mostly employment litigation and labor matters, including a couple of really fun strikes.

Since then I've been teaching law, labor relations, and risk management in the College of Hotel

Administration at UNLV.

Kathy and I were married in 2007. She's an RN working for United Healthcare. Our oldest Jon-

Paul just finished his freshman year at UNR and Nick will start at Cal Poly in the fall. Bobby will

be a senior (and place kicker) at Bishop Gorman HS and Joe will be a junior at Palo Verde HS,

playing trumpet in the marching band. Little Phonsie was an improbable but wonderful and

surprise -- a chance to do it all one more time. He starts kindergarten in the fall.

We spend a lot of our free time fishing and hiking in southern Utah, where we plan to retire

some far off day in a very quiet place.

Cindy Wilson I joined Bowles Rice McDavid Graff & Love in Charleston in 1989, where I did coal, oil and gas work and related litigation. About 4 1/2 years later, I went in-house with Mountaineer Gas Company, West Virginia's largest natural gas utility. A couple of years later, Mountaineer was sold, and, as in-house legal departments often don't survive these events and my children needed health insurance, I left to clerk at the Public Service Commission of West Virginia in 1995. I advise and directly support all three gubernatorial appointees. By statute, our Commissioners must be from both political parties, so I choose not to have any public political opinions these days. I saw a Bowles Rice partner the other day and said that I was quickly approaching the "Rule of 80," under which I could retire from the state system and do something else, and that I had been working for gubernatorial appointees for a very loooong time. He aptly remarked, "You've survived gubernatorial appointees for a very long time." Our commission has a broader mandate than public utility boards in most other states. We regulate water, sewer, gas, electric, telephone and taxicabs, and have limited oversight over wreckers and household goods movers. Moreover, West Virginia law requires trash collectors and landfills to be certificated. By state statute, we also handle quality of service complaints and have rate review authority for the basic tier prices of cable television service. And, if a county does not have a franchising authority, the Commission fills that role for applications to provide cable service. We also get a case about an oil pipeline (yes, there is one in WV) or a toll bridge every once in a while. When the Legislature wants something new regulated, that topic often lands here. A few years ago, a plan was reached to allow coal trucks to carry more weight on designated roads, and we are responsible for the system to issue permits to these haulers and enforce the weight limits. When the cost of veteran's grave markers was regulated, that was assigned to us. The WV Public Service Commission, not a separate siting board, issues Siting Certificates for wholesale electric generators, including wind farms. We also certify alternative and renewable energy facilities as a qualified energy resource to generate alternative and renewable energy resource credits. Twice during my time here I've been the lead law clerk, with hiring and training responsibilities for other attorneys working for the Commissioners. As the political winds blow, the lead law clerk responsibility shifts and I'm out of that role at the moment.

My son Eric, 27, who you may remember was born between first and second years, is a Nuke Sailor on the USS Eisenhower based in Virginia Beach. When he qualified to operate the ship's reactor, he described it to his aunt this way, "It means that some important people trust me to take care of a floating nuclear plant. . . Don't freak out too much." When his Navy contract is up in about 2 years, he plans to go to law school, likely in Virginia. His wife, Andrea, is the first assistant golf pro at Broad Bay Country Club in Virginia Beach.

My other son, Bradley, 22, graduated from Marshall University this summer in international business and finance, and he is in the midst of deciding how to make his way in life as an adult. Grad school is probably in his stars, but I vote (to the extent that I have a say any longer) for some real world work experience first. His semester abroad was at Anglia-Ruskin University in Cambridge, England. In the spring of 2013, I hopped across the pond to visit him and we saw the Colosseum, Ephesus, Pompeii, the Acropolis and Stonehenge in one wonderful trip.

I was divorced about 10 years ago and now that college expenses are done, I'm attending to delayed maintenance items at home – roof, gutters, tree trimming, and so on. I love traveling, cooking and yoga, and I probably should think about an intervention to separate me a bit from my Kindle. This summer I'm growing Swiss chard in a container outside of my office. The deer have quite the sense of entitlement to anything that I plant at home.

In the next phase of my work life, I'd like to teach legal writing, full- or part-time. If I land in a law school setting, perhaps I might teach administrative law, too.

Like Judy Levy, I attended law school several years after college and was a non-traditional student. While pregnant and mothering a newborn, there wasn't much time or energy for me to socialize at UC. These blog posts make me feel more connected now than I was 25 years ago.

Many, many thanks to the planning committee.
