    HENRY SMITH MP HOUSE OF COMMONS LONDON SW1A 0AA Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP Chancellor of the Exchequer HM Treasury 1 Horse Guards Road London SW1A 2HQ 13th July 2021 Dear Chancellor We are writing to you as a group of cross-party MPs and Peers to urge you to extend the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme for workers in the aviation, travel and tourism industries until March 2022 in order to prevent significant job losses when the scheme is due to close in September. As you will know, our aviation, travel and tourism sectors were the first to be impacted as a consequence of COVID-19, with passenger numbers collapsing from March 2020 and with recovery likely to take a number of years, these will also be one of the last sectors to recover. The consequences on our aviation, travel and tourism sectors have been devastating, with businesses seeing little or no revenue for over fifteen months, significant job losses and the risk of business failure remaining a real risk. However, with the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme due to close in September, we run the very real risk of a major jobs crisis in the industry. The latest ONS statistics show that 57% of employees in passenger air transport and 51% of those employed by travel agency and tour operators remain on furlough. With a lost summer season coming on top of the worst fifteen months in the history of UK aviation, without the continuing support of the CJRS the risk of significant redundancies will become a stark and devastating reality.

As you are aware, Mr Rajab is currently facing up to 15 years in prison for tweeting and retweeting statements in 2015 criticising the conduct of Bahrain’s security forces at a prison, for "insulting a neighbourly country" – a charge related to tweets criticising rights abuses by Saudi Arabia, and for retweeting statements critical of Bahrain’s part in the war in Yemen. Mr Rajab faces further charges, most notably one related to an article he wrote which was published in the New York Times, which could further lengthen a prison sentence. The European Parliament has previously called for Mr Rajab’s immediate and unconditional release in an urgent resolution that expressed grave concern over the ongoing campaign of repression of human rights defenders, political opposition and civil society. Bahraini authorities have previously faced criticism from the United Nations and the US State Department over their treatment of Mr Rajab. Both have expressly called for his release. Other high profile NGOs have called for an end to Mr Rajab’s incarceration, including Amnesty International who have labelled his trial as a “barefaced assault on freedom of expression”, the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, Human Rights Watch and the International Federation for Human Rights. We welcome the action the government has taken so far in this case, including representations made to Bahraini officials, and the attendance by an official from the British Embassy in Bahrain at all of Mr Rajab’s court hearings.

This was sadly a necessary measure to tackle a serious health emergency and protect the UK from the spread of new variants of COVID-19. It will however cause the effective end of all international travel and is a devastating blow to the aviation, travel, and tourism industries, those working in the sector and the communities who depend on them. These have been amongst the hardest hit of our economy and have suffered unprecedented losses, with passenger numbers at historically low levels even during the peak summer season. As an island nation, our aviation, travel, and tourism sectors are integral to our economy and are major employers throughout the UK. They will also be a vital part of our economic recovery from the pandemic when it is safe to do so. It is therefore essential that action is taken now to provide further protection for these businesses, their supply chains, employees, and communities. We therefore urge you to work with all in and associated with these industries to introduce a full and comprehensive ‘Aviation, Travel and Tourism Recovery Package’ that will provide immediate financial and additional support alongside a pathway to allow aviation to come out of these restrictions when safe to do so.

The current rules condemn child refugees, fleeing conflict and persecution, to live in the UK without their parents. It also prevents parents from bringing their children over the age of 18. At a time when refugees need their families the most, they are being forced to be without them indefinitely. They say a week is a long time in politics, but a year is a long time to wait. For refugee families it means a year of missed birthdays, Christmases, Mother’s Days, Father’s Day and Eids. We cannot let the urgent crowd out the important. We urge you to use your power to stop the delays on this Bill and allow it the necessary time to proceed and be debated. With your help we can bring families together.
