Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

From the Pastor’s Desk “We Enter Into The mystery of time…”

Today’s Gospel: Mark 11:1-10 From the Procession Background on the Gospel Reading

“All of the Gospels report the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem several days before he will be put to death. It is important to each of the evangelists to underscore the humility of a king who comes riding a lowly colt. In fact, the colt is really the central character of these ten verses. Jesus gives his disciples specific instructions to find a particular colt at a designated location; the people question the disciples as to why they are untying and taking the colt; finally, the disciples place their own cloaks over it. All of this is done to draw the prophecy of Zechariah to the forefront: “Behold: your king is coming to you, a just savior is he, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). The humility of this king is so great that he will not even ride upon a donkey but rather upon the offspring of a donkey.

Unlike the account of the triumphant entry in Matthew and Luke, Mark makes no mention of a vast multitude: Instead, he refers simply to “many people.” Since Mark’s reporting of the story is the first of the synoptics to be written, we may do well to reframe our imagination’s portrayal of Jesus’ journey from Bethpage and Bethany to Jerusalem on this day. It is likely that the historical event that took place without much fanfare. Moreover, because Jesus’ entrance into the holy city took place simultaneously with the arrival of a throng of pilgrims to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover feast, it may very well have occurred unnoticed. It is even possible that the scene of waving palm branches and the singing of Psalm 118 with shouts of “Hosanna!” may have been part of a traditional pilgrim chant prayed by those passing through the gates of the sacred city.

Whatever the case may be, the liturgical use of this Gospel passage to accompany the pilgrim church on its entrance into the atmosphere of Holy Week is of principal importance. These sacred days are meant to rehearse in our lives the central mystery of our faith, the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s suffering, death, and Resurrection. Thus, in the week ahead, joy mingles with tragedy, and betrayal stands alongside hope. Just as the people outside Jerusalem welcomed Jesus with great anticipation of his power, so are we invited to see that ultimate power resides in humility and obedience to God’s will. “Hosanna in the highest!” Amen Fr. Noel P. Tria Page 4 St. Ann Catholic Parish, March 27 & 28, 2021

Easter is a joyful time of year. Let us always remember the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection and His endless love for each one of us!

As we celebrate our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, on Easter Sunday, we will serve coffee, juice, and pastries following the 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Masses.

We invite you to share in this time of fellowship with our St. Ann Parish Family near the fountain and brick patio area.

We are grateful for those who can share in our Holy Week services and remember those in prayer who are not able to be with us at this time or are watching from home via social media.

May the risen Christ bring you and your family abundant happiness…
