The song was used on the soundtrack of the movie Twenty Four Seven and as such is one of the nineteen movie hits featured on Morrison's compilation album, Van Morrison at the Movies - Soundtrack Hits. The original as On a Wild Night in is one of the hits included on the compilation album, Still on Top - The Greatest Hits. The song was included on Mellencamp's album, Dance Naked [13] and an "acoustic" remix was released as a promotional single for radio. The first stanza of this piece is the only one that maintains any kind of pattern at all, and it is an unusual one, rhyming: abbb. That being said, the lines are not disparate. In fact, Dickinson has structured a great number of the lines in dimeter. Not all, but many, contain two sets of two beats. The first of these is stressed and the second unstressed. An iamb works the same way except the unstressed beat comes first. It refers to a night of passion, whether that passion is of a sexual or spiritual nature is up for interpretation. But the emphasis added through the repetition of the phrase makes it one of the most important. The last two stanzas in particular are filled with images of, or associated with, the ocean and its navigation. One can interpret the love and passion expressed by the speaker as aimed at a lover, or as a result of a spiritual love for God. One should consider the fact that Dickinson came from a very strict, religious household. Therefore, if intended sexually, this piece written in the early s would have been shocking. You can read the full poem here. They could be made up of spiritual moments she spent with God in which her passion for him grew. Or it could refer to sexual love between the speaker and a partner. She is in Eden and seeking out a way forward in which the two can remain together. In the first stanza of this piece the speaker begins with the repetition of On a Wild Night two word phrase which presents one of the vaguest images in the text. As will be the case throughout the text, this line has a double meaning. It could refer to a night of passionate love between the speaker and a partner, or to spiritual love with God. No matter if the line refers to a sexual or religious experience, the night was extremely noteworthy. In the second line she turns her attention to the intended listener. Luxury is a word that can also have a dual meaning. It can On a Wild Night to the ownership of something special, beyond the normal, or the fulfillment of a desire. Both definitions seem to apply here. The second stanza is even more vague than the first. They are useless to the speaker, something has happened now that resulted in her no longer needing the wind to On a Wild Night her. This line, and those that follow, take the strictly emotional declaration from the abstract to a world more physical in nature. There are not characters or specific locations, but Dickinson is now considered with On a Wild Night relationship between love and the sea. Just as with the previous line, these phrases could apply to either romantic or spiritual love. The third quatrain continues the nautical imagery. She has reached Nirvana, at least in her mind. This is the place she would love to be above all others. The third line of the stanza makes it clear that she is not actually in Eden. The final two lines of the third stanza can be read as a wish. The speaker is On a Wild Night with her object of affection, whether that be another person or God, but she certainly wants to be.     JOHN MELLENCAMP Born October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana, John Mellencamp fell in love with music at an early age and was gigging in local bars and fronting a soul band by the time he was 14. His professional music career began in earnest in 1976 when MCA Records released his first album, The Chestnut Street Incident. His manager dubbed him Johnny Cougar out of his belief that nobody would buy a record by anybody named Mellencamp. John protested but was overruled and eventually, of course, reclaimed his birth name as his public name. Born Michelle Lynn Johnson on August 29, 1968, in Berlin, Germany, where her father, a lieutenant in the U. S. Army, was stationed, Ndegeocello is also known by the name Meshell Suhaila Bashir-Shakur, which she adopted several years ago after converting to Islam. Throughout her career, Ndegeocello has been open about her bisexuality. In interviews, she has spoken about her relationships with choreographer Winifred R. Harris and writer and activist Rebecca Walker, and she sports a "Rebecca" tattoo on her neck. However, while she continues to sing and write about sexual identity and sexuality, since the break-up of her relationship with Walker, Ndegeocello has become more reticent with interviewers about details of her private relationships with lovers, friends, and family members. "My personal life is my haven, my sanctuary," Ndegeocello told Michele Kort of The Advocate, "so I'm going to treat it as such." As a teenager living in Washington, D.
