Overview of the Theme that Won the Top Award [Theme] Development of self-dissolving microneedles consisting of hyaluronic acid as an anti-wrinkle treatment [Award Recipient] Yukiko Matsunaga, Researcher (Innovative Science Research & Development Center), Shiseido Research Center [Summary] Shiseido successfully developed an eye patch showing effective improvement of wrinkles, which was used self-dissolving microneedle technology. Microneedle technology is a newly advanced system for drug delivery and has been recently gained increased attention to its painless manner and safety in the medical field. We applied this microneedle technology to cosmetics as larger eye patch*3 with appropriate size and shape, in which 1200 needles were aligned on the surface (Image). Needles consist of hyaluronic acid which is essential to maintaining skin moisture and elasticity and known to decrease with aging..Successive administration of this patch preparation to the eye corner resulted in significant improvements of wrinkles, with increases of water content in the stratum corneum and viscoelasticity, which is an index of resilience.*4 The patch applied these results have been commercialized in HA Fill Patch (launched in March 2011) by NAVISION*5 brand for medical cosmetic treatment.

*3 Self-dissolving type, in which the needles melt by skin temperature and moisture. *4 Used twice a week for 4 weeks at the eye corners of 26 healthy female volunteers ranging in age from 30s to 50s. *5 Cosmetics brand launched in the market in November 2005 for medical cosmetic treatment (11 items for doctor-use products, 28 items for home-use products); http://www.shiseido.co.jp/navision/ (only in )

IFSCC and Shiseido In 1959, cosmetics chemists from eight countries founded the IFSCC with the aim of sharing information internationally for the development of cosmetics technologies. The organization currently has approximately 15,000 members in 47 countries. IFSCC Congresses are held once every two years on even-numbered years. With nearly 200 research presentations and more than 1,000 participants, the congress is truly recognized as the world’s most authoritative event for presenting research regarding cosmetics and skin. Furthermore, since 2003, a top award has been presented to one most outstanding research presentation at the IFSCC Conferences, which are held on odd-numbered years to educate young researchers and enhance the awareness of developing country members. Having accumulated a total of 15 top IFSCC Congress and IFSCC Conference awards*6, Shiseido is the recipient of more of these awards than any other cosmetic manufacturer in the world. The awards validate that Shiseido takes leading research and development initiative in the global cosmetics industry, earns high regard for the technologies it has accumulated, and contributes to the creation of safe, reassuring, high quality products that its competitors cannot imitate.
