SECRETARY’S REPORT SEASON 2019/2020 I am delighted to be able to present my Annual Report the first as secretary of the Essex and Suffolk Border League. A year ago none of us would have been able to guess in a million years how the season has panned out! Last year Richard started his report with the words, “In a season that, in the main, has been uneventful once again”- well none of us can say that about this season. Coronavirus has truly wreaked havoc with football at every single level and a lot more. For the first time in a number of years the winter was very wet and we lost many games because of wet pitches. So come the middle of March we were already behind with fixtures and looking like we would have to play well into May to complete the fixtures. We played up to and including 14 March and followed government, FA and ECFA advice however, on 16 March we suspended fixtures until further notice. Once football was suspended we waited week on week to see if there was any possibility of restarting and completing games. It soon became clear that the general situation with the virus was getting worse and following the FA’s decision the season was abandoned and all fixtures were voided, with no promotions or relegations. It is still hoped that the Cup Competitions can be completed as a precursor to the new season 2020-2021. We have been kept informed by both the FA and ECFA with “Coronavirus Updates” which have been passed on to clubs and posted on the website. However, at this moment in time there is still no indication as to when grass roots football will return. They have been able to restart top flight football behind closed doors and with a rigorous programme of testing and preventative measures in place. This is not possible even at Division One and Two level let alone grass roots. Clubs have been able to restart training providing they carefully follow government and FA guidance and advice. This, of course, has been very well received by all participants in grass roots football. So, this year, no winners or runners up, no promotions or relegations, no medals or glory for the teams! However, there are some performances which are notable and worthy of comment. In the Premier Division, Stanway Pegasus, promoted last season, were topping the table when the season was abandoned, they were 10 points clear of Great Bentley. However, on a points per game basis Great Bentley were superior and could have been the winners had the season been concluded. In fact the division was very competitive and in reality any of the top 5 had a real possibility of winning the division. Particular mention to both Pegasus and Flitch who were 8 both new to the Premier Division and gave very creditable performances in their first season. In Division One, no one could match Sudbury Sports. They were 6 points clear when the season was abandoned and their points per game was superior to anyone in the whole league; they lost only 1 league game and drew 2. Tiptree Jobserve’s performance was almost as good with one loss and 5 draws. Colne Athletic also had an excellent season just one point behind Jobserve. Division 2 was also very tight at the top and the title could have gone to any of the top 5 teams who all played very competitively. Hedinghams leading on points but Shrub End leading on points per game. Moving on to Division Three, again the top 5 teams were all in contention. St Osyth, in their first season back with the Border League, looked the most likely winner, with Oyster and Lawford Lads Reserves being hard on their heels. Our own Cup Finals were well contested, as far as they went. As I have already said we do hope to be able to complete the 9 remaining games to complete these competitions. The Representative team played in 2 rounds of the Inter League Cup. Beating the Southern Combination League 1 – 0 at The Harwich ground and losing to the Southern Amateur League 3 – 1 at Little Oakley. With thanks to both clubs for their hospitality. Our Manager, Mr Tony Armstrong is to be congratulated on his achievements in this and previous seasons. After 23 years in the position he has decided to step down. The League would like to thank him for his service over the years and for raising the profile of representative football in the league. We are currently looking for a replacement for Tony to take us forward.
