The project draws on earlier work from amateur cinema and film studies discourse and calls attention to the visual histories of four ethnic groups and the meanings behind their home movie making practices. Findings include the stories of the individuals and families, commonalities between similar projects, themes uncommon in existing home movie literature, and subjective images imbued with history and culture. By conducting a series of case studies inspired by ethnographic style interviews as well as textual and contextual analysis, my project identifies unique characteristics of Southeast and Northeast Asian Canadian home movies and shows why they are worthy not only of research and study but preservation for future generations. ii Preface This thesis is an original, unpublished, independent work by the author, S. Manabat. The case studies reported in Chapters 3-4 were deemed to be in accordance with University of Calgary Guidelines and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans 2010 (TCPS 2). Approval was issued by the University of Calgary Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB) for the project “Alternative Histories: Calgary’s East Asian Amateur Film Heritage” on August 30, 2016. iii Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my Thesis Supervisor, Charles Tepperman, who first introduced me to the world of amateur cinema almost a decade ago and helped foster my interest in old movies. During my time as his grad student, Dr. Tepperman provided me with countless learning opportunities both on and off campus. He has been immensely supportive, encouraging, and patient with me during this long process and for that I am tremendously grateful. I wish to thank my committee members, Dr. Annie Rudd, and Dr. Matthew Croombs for taking the time during a busy December to read through my work and help me finesse it. I am also very thankful for all the families who provided their home movies and were interviewed during my research. This thesis would not have been possible without their participation. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Tom Bernier at the Archives of Alberta who provided me digital access to the Yamabe & Wright fonds. My past and present graduate friends at the University also cannot be overlooked. I would like to thank all of them for their friendship and for being a constant source of support and advice. I'd also like to thank my immediate and extended family and close friends, who also kept me sane. Finally, I’d also like to thank my best friends Onyx T’Challa and Karan for helping me achieve my goals by keeping me warm and well fed. iv Table of Contents Abstract
