SKI LIFTS: QUICKER ACCOMMODATION AND MORE COMFORTABLE! All the economic players in the Department are involved in This year, ski lifts have been improved by the acquisition of new classifying existing accommodation and are working to ensure equipment such as detachable chairlifts with up to 6 places, that structures likely to invest in the High-Mountain areas are and cable cars so as to make the best use of the ski area (more attractive. runs served by fewer ski lifts and greater comfort for skiers). Children, who are bursting with energy, shouldn’t be left out on family holidays. French mountain resorts organize special activities for children of all ages. Great attention is paid to safety, and activities are led by mountain professionals. Following on from educational areas devoted to the very young (Piou Piou clubs), French ski schools have developed the “Kids Park”, intended to teach young skiers "freestyle" in suitable, safe conditions. www.frenchriviera-mountain.com SKI RESORTS IN THE ALPES-MARITIMES 6 7 MAJOR INVESTMENTS The Alpes-Maritimes “Conseil Général” plays an important role in the development of the department’s ski resorts for many reasons: maintaining employment in the mountain districts; preserving the complementary nature of economic activity between the coast and the hinterland, which contributes to the harmony and cohesion of the area; the need to establish durable conditions for the development and operation of ski areas in the various resorts. Nearly 168 million Euros have been invested in order to provide greatly improved equipment in the department’s resorts. 5 joint associations have been set up, grouping together 7 resorts: Gréolières and L’Audibergue, La Colmiane, Mercantour (Auron, Isola 2000), Roubion and Valberg, 90% financed by the ‘Conseil Général’. The extent and quality of improvements carried out in the ski areas, especially as far as ski lifts and snow making are concerned (44 million Euros invested since 2004 to guarantee snow coverage), make up for lack of snow and the resorts are now able to attract an international clientele. In 2011: investments in the pipeline total €18.5 M and the Alpes- Maritimes “Conseil General” has contributed €12.7 M to the joint associations. Works carried out in 2010: > Acquisition of a chairlift for “La Colmiane” (Génisserie Isola 2000) > Bringing up to standard the ski lifts at Isola 2000, Auron, Gréolières-Les-Neiges, L’Audibergue and Valberg > Purchasing equipment for ski runs, refurbishing runs and signposting in all the resorts > Acquisition of a piste-basher at L’Audibergue, Isola 2000 and Valberg > Completion of the construction of the chairlift from Valette to Isola 2000 > Completion of the construction of the hillside dam for covering the Demandols sector with snow > Facelift for the runs at the “Sommet

  • Snowshoeing in France's Mercantour National Park
Snowshoeing in France’s Mercantour National Park By Lisa Abdolian Recently I heard a French teenager decline an invitation to hang out with friends over the weekend because she was going hiking with her family. As I braced myself for the teen-typical eye roll and sarcastic remark about “family time,” I realized that she was actually excited about wandering through the woods with her parents. It reminded me of one of the things I like most about France – the harmony between man and nature and the great respect people have for the landscape. The country’s peaks and valleys aren’t just for those in their physical prime; they are for families with children of all ages, the elderly who have spent the equivalent of years roaming the woods and for true athletes who enjoy the challenge of an adventure. Extremely well marked walking paths, called France Grandes Randonnées (GR), criss-cross the country, providing 37,282 miles of meandering trails that highlight the most remarkable aspects of an area. Winter, spring, summer and fall, the paths take visitors through the country’s national and regional parks, into intimate medieval mountain villages, past grazing cattle, to breathtaking coastal views, past cheese farms and small wineries. The paths unravel the history of the landscape and its people and reveal unique local traditions. Even on the highest mountain range walkers will find strings of refuges that allow them to rest in the evening with a shower, a good meal, a comfortable bed and an occasional sing-a-long. 1 Nowhere is this enthusiasm for nature more apparent than in France’s youngest national park.

  • Maritime Alps Summer 2013 Wildlife Tour Report Botanical Birdwatching
Maritime Alps Satyrs and the Ancient King A Greentours Tour Report 16th to 23rd July 2013 Led by Paul Cardy and Stefano Doglio Daily Accounts and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy The third of the Greentours summer Alpine trilogy, following on from The Dolomites and Slovenia, was an excellent week in the western Alps, on both the French and Italian sides of the glorious Maritime Alps. Even after more than a decade of leading tours here, and living just to the north in the Cottian Alps, the area still holds some surprises. Plant highlights this year included Lilium pomponium, Allium narcissiflorum, and Saxifraga callosa all in fine flower, the latter locally abundant cascading from cliffs and walls. Special were the endemic Micromeria marginata, the beautiful endemic Viola valderia, and many of the local speciality Nigritella corneliana. New for the tour this year were Orobanche salviae, Phyteuma globulariifolium, Knautia mollis, Achillea tomentosa, Gentiana brachyphylla, and Leuzea conifera. It was also a very good season for butterflies, not quite reaching the lofty heights of 2012’s 124 species, but we recorded approaching 100 species, many in large numbers. The first five nights were spent at a small pleasant family run hotel in the Valdeblore hamlet of La Bolline, a fine location, well situated for all excursions, and with a small grocery and a bakery just along the street where I could do the daily picnic shopping whilst Stefano looked after the group at breakfast. For the last two nights of the tour we moved to the other side of Mercantour National Park, and the hamlet of Casterino, which allowed easy access into the Italian Alpi Maritime, a superbly productive area.

  • L'étape DU TOUR DE FRANCE 2020: a Major First Un Nice for the 30Th
Nice, October 3rd 2020 L’ÉTAPE DU TOUR DE FRANCE 2020: A major first un Nice for the 30th Key points: ➢ The date for the 30th edition of the Étape du Tour de France has been reserved for 5th July 2020. One week after the professionals, the amateur riders will follow the roads of the 2nd stage on the Tour de France, over a distance of 177 km, starting and finishing in Nice. ➢ In the history of the Étape du Tour de France, it is both the first loop stage and the first to be ridden along the coast. However, during their trek, the 16,000 amateur cyclists expected will twice climb to more than 1,500 metres above sea level on the Col de la Colmiane and Col de Turini. ➢ Bernard Thévenet will be ambassador of the Étape du Tour de France and the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2020 in Nice. ➢ Registration opens on 21st October at 16.00 on the time to web site. When the Tour de France takes on a southern accent, mountainous stages can be found on the route right from the start. This will indeed be the case in 2020 with the Grand Départ in Nice taking advantage of the Southern Alps from as early as the second stage. The loop-shaped route will be taken several days after the elite riders by the amateur cyclists who sign up for the Étape du Tour de France. Naturally, it is a challenge made for the climbers among the 16,000 participants expected, because over 177 kilometres of racing the expedition will gobble up a total upward gradient of 3,570 metres.
