We gave a standing ovation to all the athletes at the award- ing ceremony, including the Canadi- ans, who got the bronze. The Olympic Games is a party of peace and love. Although this was the fi rst game I saw in person during London 2012, I had been watching live broadcasts on big screens in Hyde Park. As each athlete was introduced before a track and fi eld event, a group of people in the crowd would shout and cheer. I did so when Chinese com- petitors appeared onscreen. Even if you don’t have tickets, you can still get involved. On July 27, 2.9 million people par- ticipated in artist Martin Creed’s Work No 1197: All the Bells in a Country Rung as Quickly and as Loudly as Pos- sible for Three Minutes to herald the 2012 Olympic Games’ start. Th ere are also many free games, like the cycling road race, the race walk and the marathon. Th ey all happen in the streets of London and make the city a unique stage for athletes’ performances. On Sunday, the men’s marathon will be the last chance for everybody in London to see the Games without a ticket. I cheered for marathon runners in the streets of Beijing in 2008. It was one of my best memories from that Games. I’m going to relive that moment on Sunday. • Snips and Snipes 8 February 2018 the Threat That the IOC May Drop Boxing from the 2020 Olympic Games Should Come As No Surprise
Snips and Snipes 8 February 2018 The threat that the IOC may drop boxing from the 2020 Olympic Games should come as no surprise. For a few years now the AIBA which has responsibility for administrating International “amateur” boxing-but let’s not kid ourselves the Olympics Games are no longer for amateurs-have too long been focusing on making money rather than developing the sport. For a few years they have through the WSB and other initiatives helped make the transition from AIBA to professional boxing easier for elite boxers. However they have failed to tackle the quality of judging and refereeing and have failed to put in place and to police internal controls leaving themselves open to allegations of mismanagement and profligacy taking the organisation to the edge of bankruptcy. The criticism over their handling of boxing at the Rio Olympics had already put them under the IOC spotlight and then they went and shot themselves in the foot over the appointment of an interim President . They selected a man who has been sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department for alleged links to a major “transnational criminal organisation”. I can almost imagine the conversation “We need an interim President let’s appoint Gafur Rakhimov” with one voice saying “ isn’t he sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department for alleged link to a major “transnational criminal organisation”. “Yes sounds just the man for the job”! A ban from the Olympics would be a huge blow for boxing’s prestige but it is more difficult to decide whether it would have any repercussions for professional boxing.

Top Rank signs Olympian Teofimo Lopez According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Top Rank has signed Honduran Olympian Teofimo Lopez. Lopez will make his professional debut in a four-round bout against an opponent to be determined on the Manny Pacquiao- Jessie Vargas undercard on Nov. 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. “He’s one of my homies,” Arum joked, because they are both originally from Brooklyn. “I think this kid is a real talent. The [matchmakers] are really high on him. He’s a real strong kid and has a really big future as a professional. He can fight. He’s a good fighter. If he wasn’t we wouldn’t have signed him, but it’s a shame he wasn’t part of the U.S. Olympic team. There’s amateur boxing politics.” “I’ve sparred with a lot of pros,” Lopez said. “Sometimes they would invite me to go to their training camps, sometimes they were here in my area [in Florida]. I’ve been in training camp with Shawn Porter at the time he was fighting Keith Thurman, and Brad Solomon, helping them get ready for their fights, and they were both 20 pounds bigger than me. “I also sparred with Guillermo Rigondeaux and Luke Campbell, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist. I’ve sparred with many, many, many professionals since I was 13 years old. I’m an entertainer — got to entertain! My style — I’m technical, very technical. I’m very smart when I’m in the ring, like Albert Einstein.
