Kids’ charity surprise day Haringey kids celebrated the BBC’s with special visits from two surprise guests – footballer Dele Alli and musician Danny Jones from the band McFly.

Midfielder Dele Alli visited the Vale School in Tottenham, where he surprised Mark, a young Spurs fan who is supported by Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, the Club’s Official Charity Partner. Dele joined in helping Mark with his studies and then took part in some music and sport sessions. McFly band member Danny Jones, who is also a coach on the Voice Kids UK, helped support the Children in Need schools fundraising campaign with Twinkl by visiting pupils at Welbourne Primary School. He hosted a reading of “Pudsey’s Great Fundraiser” which was streamed live to schools across the UK. Dele said: “It’s been brilliant meeting Mark – Noah’s Ark is a fantastic charity.” Parveen Duggal, Head Teacher at Welbourne Primary School, said: “We were so excited to be working with BBC Children in Need on this event.” The successful day was enjoyed by the Haringey pupils and staff as well as everyone who watched the reading streamed live nationally.

Let it Shine

More than a café, Shine is a community hub that offers training and volunteering opportunities for local people and hosts a wonderful variety of groups and events. Shine welcomes everyone from the public, the homeless and those suffering from mental health, alcohol or drug issues – and staff can signpost and offer advice to those in need. We spoke to the lead Shine project officer, Kevin Farrell (above), who also runs the café.

What is Shine? What’s your personal experience been, Kevin? We are a socially inclusive coffee shop open to everyone. Ten years ago I was homeless. I was in and out of a We don’t turn anyone away. How can the community get involved? As the centre was losing money, I said, “Let me make this socially inclusive and community led. It will take time but it The first step is coming through our doors! Just pop in will absolutely take off”. So we did a crowdfunder campaign and have a cuppa and see what we’re about. Inspiring Women of Haringey: a Suffragette in the Family

This year is the centenary of the Representation of the People Act. Created in 1918, the Act allowed some women – those owning property and over the age of 30 – the right to vote for the first time. At the general election on 14 December 1918, 8.5 million women and 5.6 million men were enfranchised. It took another ten years until the age qualification was abolished, putting men and women on a more equal footing.

The women’s suffrage movement reached every part of the country and cut across all classes. Some of the stories about individual suffragettes and their struggle for the vote are well known to us. Other stories lay untold, forgotten or hidden. This fascinating exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum presents the wonderful stories and research about local women who campaigned for the vote more than 100 years ago. These stories, artefacts and photographs have been kindly shared with Collective Exchange and Bruce Castle Museum & Haringey Archive by relatives proud of these pioneering women in their families. The exhibition tells us more about the lives of these women - such as the Spongs of Muswell Hill - who made their voices heard in their fierce struggle to get the right to vote. The exhibition runs until the end of March 2019.
