    “NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 A dissertation presented by Sarah Elizabeth Connell to The Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of English Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts April 2014 1 “NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 by Sarah Elizabeth Connell ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University April 2014 2 ABSTRACT In this project, I build on the scholarship that has challenged the historiographic revolution model to question the valorization of the early modern humanist narrative history’s sophistication and historiographic advancement in direct relation to its concerted efforts to shed the purportedly pious, credulous, and naïve materials and methods of medieval history. As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity.

    The marketing of roots-tourism and its social implications in Ireland∗ Caroline Legrand In the age of multiculturalism, the making of family-trees has become a way to express simultaneously what makes people different (and/or similar) from each other and what makes their family histories fit (or shed) specific historical moments. In the United States of America, this whole process has gained considerable visibility since the media coverage of Roots (1976). Afro-American Alex Haley who wrote this saga served as a model for thousands of Americans after he had traced his family background, starting from oral accounts he collected for almost twelve years both in America and in Gambia. As he traced successfully (but in a very questionable way) the connection that he and his family had with the experience of slavery, he demonstrated the overlapping of family and collective histories. In doing so, Alex Haley showed that this activity could be used as a process for manufacturing a long history for oneself and as a means for asserting one’s individuality and positive identity. As regards other ethnic groups existing in America, the history of European emigration sometimes symbolises a cut in familial paths. According to people of Irish extraction who live in America, it could represent the stated origin of what they feel they are: uprooted people. Reading their past and establishing their genealogy in the light of this migration history has consequently become a way for them to better understand the reason why they feel this way. Genealogical investigations might provide them a sense of who they are by locating their origin in the past and in a foreign country.

There were calls in commentary to declare this device as having two steps from period practice: the first for the use of an enfield, the second for the addition of the wings. According to Section VII.5 of the Rules for Submission, the creation of winged monsters is explicitly not a step from period practice. This overturns the precedent from October 1976, where Karina Laurel said that "Putting wings on an enfield does not make it legal". Additionally, precedent says: While the enfield appears in period, the only period examples we can find are supporters. (The device was returned for conflict) [Anacletus McTerlach, July 2004, R-Meridies] Charges used in period as supporters are, by definition, not a step from period practice. The July 1981 ruling that enfields are only "compatible with period usage", which would make them a step from period practice, is overturned. Please instruct the submitter to draw the rapier slightly thicker, so that it does not disappear into the background.
