This does not mean the named ensemble will solely perform the works of that artist, but, invoking these names reminds us, and our audience, of our music’s great history and its interconnectedness. In addition, ensemble coaches will incorporate important aspects of each artist’s work, into their ensemble teaching throughout the year. The named ensembles and their coaches are • The Dave Brubeck Ensemble, in the spirit of integrating arts, coached by Helen Sung • The Jelly Roll Morton Ensemble, in the spirit of interpreting the original meanings of jazz, coached by Doug Wamble • The Dizzy Gillespie Ensemble, in the spirit of innovation, dance, Afro-Latin music, humor, and teaching, coached by Elio Villafranca • The Max Roach Ensemble, in the spirit of Civil Rights experimentation and understanding of the African Diaspora, coached by Ulysses Owens Jr. • The Mary Lou Williams Ensemble, in the spirit of stride piano, arranging and intellectual discourse on music techniques and meaning, coached by Bruce Williams • The Duke Ellington Ensemble (Artist Diploma Ensemble), in the spirit of being ambassadors to the world, coached by Ben Wolfe 2 Meet Marc Cary Pianist and composer Marc Cary was born in New York City and raised between Providence, R.I., and Washington, D.C. His mother is a cellist, his great-grandmother was a pianist in silent movie houses who also played barrelhouse and stride duets with Eubie Blake. Ellington trumpeter Cootie Williams was a cousin of Cary's grandfather. He attended Washington’s Duke Ellington School for The Arts before moving back to New York at the age of 21.The next decade of his life found him sharing stages and working with Dizzy Gillespie, Arthur Taylor, Carlos Garnett, Jackie McLean, Wynton Marsalis, and Carmen McRae. He was a favorite accompanist to singers including Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Ani DiFranco. His debut recording as a leader was released in 1995, and since then has released more than a dozen albums. Cary remains one of the progenitors of contemporary jazz, evident in his influence on peers. Live performances with vibraphonist Stefon Harris and bandmate Casey Benjamin began the genesis of Robert Glasper’s recording Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and Cary’s record “Taiwa” from Focus in 2006 evolved into “For You” on Glasper’s Double Booked and Harris’ Urbanus. Cary collaborator Roy Hargrove exalted him with “Caryisms” on 1992’s The Vibe, an album whose title track is one of two Cary originals including “Running Out of Time.” To the electronic jazz tradition Cary noticeably brings his own lyricism, warmth and warp-speed chops. The familial use of longtime musical comrade Sameer Gupta’s tabla, Terreon Gully’s drums, and bassist Tarus Mateen’s bedrock low-end support system insures the indelible and indispensable presence of what Dr.Funkenstein once identified as “‘the preservation of the motion of hip.”’ 3 Juilliard Board of Trustees and Administration BOARD OF TRUSTEES Ellen and James S.
