If Nelly was the first chapter of the St. Louis "Book of Rap," the St. Lunatics are the required reading that follows. As they say on their hit single "Midwest Swing," the Lou is more than the Rams and the Cardinals. It's not really surprising that the S-T-L would have hidden depths in and outside of the rap world. The only question left would be what city of the midwest will be the NEXT to get their shine on. Nothing has really changed about the sound that put Nelly and his fam on the map with past hits like "Country Grammar" and "E.I." Jay E's trademark bouncy funk beats would be a perfect match for any rappers who can swang from Eightball & MJG to Snoop Dogg. On songs like "S.T.L." the rappers themselves create most of the speed as they double up their flow over the track itself. "King of the City" might actually be a bit quicker but the members of the Lunatics are laid back in the cut just riding it out; with Nelly's "Ridin cause the haters face mad, team gritty/honk your horn twice if the missus lookin pretty" hook and first verse setting the perfect tone: "You best get on your mark, get set, and go go Like Jagged Edge I leave ya more Def-fer than So So Type of person come to your show, sit in the front row Get your hands out my pocket, you don't want it, just blow blow The only bird I get with mo' is the doe-doe" The irony of this album is the title itself, "Free City," is a reference to incarcerated St. Lunatics member City Spud. You might remember his "City talk, Nelly listen; Nelly talk, city listen" verse on the song "Ride Wit Me" album, but the only place you'll hear him on this album is the final verse of "Groovin Tonight" featuring Brian McKnight - and this is doubly ironic given that the smooth R&B groove of this track guarantees it's eventual release as a single. There are certainly other potential hits though, such as the duet with Trina on "Jang-A-Lang" or the very speedy Nelly feature "Here We Come." The downside of the St. Lunatics album, if there is one, is that Nelly still remains the most visible voice and the one you wait to hear - he's like Chali 2na on a Jurassic 5 album. This is not to insult Ali (Big Lee), Kyjuan, Murphy Lee or City Spud in any way; they are all good rappers in their own right. Murphy is probably the one in the group closest to blowing up next, with his unabashed "hell naw I ain't curr" attitude and the distinctively pitched vocal flow which was also featured throughout the "Country Grammar" album. The thing which works most about this album is the relaxed groove of the songs throughout; the kind of music you can "swing and dip" to. The most serious song on the whole album is "Scandalous"; and it also features a rather unenthusiastic bassline. You'll naturally gravitate towards the dance and party type songs like "Let Me In Now" and snare-drum-kick of "Love You So." The "Mad Baby Daddy" skits aside, there are sixteen tracks of music to keep you moving; and the St. Lunatics definitely have a place in the rap game with average to above average raps and above average to excellent music to keep your hands clappin and your fingers tappin. Music Vibes : 8 of 10 Lyric Vibes : 6 of 10 TOTAL Vibes : 7 of 10. Free City. If you're looking for protest rap with socially conscious lyrics and dense soundscapes unlike anything you've heard before, then you've come to the wrong place. But if you're looking for songs about cars and girls with sing-song rhymes and bouncy, big-bottom beats, then you may want to hold your party here. As the deliberately off-key, drawling vocals on "Midwest Swing" suggest, these down-to-earth rappers aren't at great risk of taking themselves too seriously; they're more interested in shout outs to St. Louis and having a good time in general. Fans of Nelly will probably enjoy his work on this album, but it should be noted that St. Lunatics is a group and not just a Nelly side-project. Murphy Lee's rougher, faster, and higher-pitched mic style complements Nelly's highly recognizable voice, while Ali, Kyjuan, and City Spud (whose incarceration inspired the album's title) also contribute to this album. Unfortunately, their rhymes and deliveries are often fairly unremarkable, so Nelly remains the dominant voice on Free City, even though he shares time with his peeps. It's producer Jason "Jay E" Epperson, however, who's the album's MVP; he keeps the music interesting even when the raps aren't particularly memorable. There are relatively few guest stars here, but Brian McKnight sings joyfully on the lovers' track "Groovin' Tonight," which features an interesting light jazz loop, and Penelope shows plenty of attitude on "Jan a Lang." Overall, this album isn't quite as catchy as Country Grammar, but it's still a relatively affable party album. St lunatics free city torrent downloads. Kyjuan, Ali, Murphy Lee Updated: 2009-10-06 23:28:52 Murphy Lee - Wat Da Hook Gon Be Ft. D'Bes Wine, from St. Lunatics Murphy Lee and Kyjuan, Officially Launches Tonight. In case you're wondering what the St. Lunatics' Murphy Lee and Kyjuan have been up to lately, try grabbing a cold glass of the D'Bes Wine. "The mission is to conquer St. Louis, then Missouri," Kyjuan tells Gut Check. You may recall Murphy Lee and Kyjuan's first foray into the adult beverage business with "Freaky Muscato." The sparking dessert wine came out In 2011 and landed in about 400 store locations, including QuikTrip, Randall's and Schnucks. But sometime in 2012, Lee and Kyjuan dissolved the partnership with the other owners of Freaky, while hanging on to their connection with winemaker Crown Valley. The Ste. Genevieve winery helped them not only bring back a new version of the moscato, but add a peach and blackberry-flavored wine to create D'Bes. And they're celebrating tonight in epic St. Louis fashion. Freaky -- which at one time was supposed to include a "Freaky Vodka" -- fell apart due to differences in opinion over the marketing strategy. This time, Lee and Kyjuan own the line themselves, and they've expanded their team to include Chris Topher Jones, City Spud, and fellow Lunatic and producer Jay E. The guys say the difference is that they're fully involved with the business side of things -- going out into the field, doing door-to- door sales, setting up meetings, even heading up the marketing. "I'd rather own it then be on it," explains Kyjuan. "Anything we roll out will be under 'the Best Brothers,'" says Lee. "I'm more business savvy, feeling really mature and transferring it to my music. I'm always thinking of tomorrow." D'Bes first became available at Randall's on March 14 of this year (or 3/14/14), a day they dubbed "314 Day." Today marks the end of their exclusivity agreement with Randall's and the launch of the statewide availability of the line. The wines are available at 25 locations of Randall's and also at A1 Liquor. They are currently talking with chains like Sam's Club, Petro Mart and a few others about furthering D'Bes' availability. The line contains three sweet dessert wines, including blackberry flavored (11 percent ABV), peach flavored (11 percent ABV) and the D'Bes Moscato (11.5 percent ABV). The moscato is actually almost identical to the "Freaky Muscato" -- made with the same grapes from the same fields, and it's got the same ABV. The only difference, according to sales manager Marlon Whitfield, is a slight variation in the way the grapes were processed, giving the wine a stronger, more citrusy flavor. They're all priced in the $11 to $16 range. Tonight's launch party -- "D'Bes Launch Ever" -- takes place at the Coliseum Music Lounge ( 2619 Washington Avenue; 314-531-2920 ). There will be a live band from 6 to 9 p.m. and complimentary D'Bes wine samples. Lee himself is set to perform at 8 p.m. From 10 p.m. on the event takes on a Las Vegas theme with DJs, bottle service and, of course, lots of D'Bes wine flowing.
