He received his initial musical training from his mother, Teresa de Rogatis, a pianist and composer. His early performances at the Salle Gaveau in Paris and at Wigmore Hall in London received highly favourable reviews. He went on to an extensive career in the concert halls of Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and North Africa. Feninger was particularly noted for his renditions of Chopin and Liszt; he was also a noted exponent of the piano works of Busoni. He died in Los Angeles, where he had lived and taught for many years, in 2016. Mr. Feninger’s collection of over 2,600 practical editions of piano music encompasses music of the 18th through 20th centuries. The works of over 200 composers are represented, with particular strengths in editions of Albeniz, Alkan, J.S. Bach (including the Bach-Busoni transcriptions), Bartok, Beethoven, Brahms, Busoni, Chopin, Debussy, Gottschalk, Liszt, MacDowell, Moszkowski, Palmgren, Rachmaninoff, Rubenstein, and Saint-Saëns. Many of the scores carry Feninger’s manuscript monogram and occasionally a place and date, presumably referring to either acquisition or, possibly, to performance. The scores are mostly 20th century publications and are in either original publisher’s wrappers or boards.
