Issues in Contemporary Theory
Constructive Studies Qualifying Exam Issues in Contemporary Theory The goal of the exam is to familiarize students with a range of key issues in contemporary theory. The exam will provide students with the requisite tools for sophisticated engagement with religious texts and practices while at the same time enabling them to reflect on the ways in which the study of religion contributes to contemporary theoretical debates. In consultation with an examiner or examiners, students will be expected to choose four areas from among the following conceptual categories. Normally five works will be required in each of these four areas. Those interested in particular theoretical movements (e.g. psychoanalysis, feminist theory, queer theory) are encouraged to construct lists that cover the requisite four conceptual areas and provide a broad overview of the theoretical tradition. The conceptual categories for the exam are set; the book lists provided below, however, are exemplary rather than definitive. You will notice a number of authors and individual texts easily fit within more than one rubric (in fact, many more so than are noted here). Image courtesy of the artist and Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago SPRING 2018 NEWSLETTER LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Karen Redrobe Dear Alumni and Friends, Mentorship, which has its etymological roots in the name of Mentor, the trusted friend and advisor under whose supervision Odysseus left his son, Telemachus, describes the elusive relationship between those who enter into a learning partnership that supports the transmission of various kinds of knowledge from the more experienced to the less experienced. While dictionary definitions tend to stress the movement of knowledge from an older to a younger person, in fact knowledge and experience move along various and sometimes surprising pathways. At times, the character of Mentor turns out to be Athena in disguise, reminding us that we do not always properly recognize a mentor at the moment of encounter. As one of my early pedagogy mentors Professor Sharon Willis (University of Rochester) explained, teaching is also often retroactive, and students who may feel they are getting little out of a course in the moment they take it, may awaken only later to deeper and longer-lasting insights. Mentors can also make mistakes, at times saying things or opening pathways that are meant to be helpful but are not. If these mistakes prove frustrating to the mentee, they also make clear that mentoring is a two-way street, and that, with any luck, mentors learn at least as much as they transmit. -

Girl Love KAJA SILVERMAN Photograph (l998–99) begins like the story of creation: a “formless void and darkness cover[ing] the face of the deep.”1 Before long, a wind “sweeps over the face of the waters,” and light begins to separate itself from darkness. But the creation with which Photograph begins gives rise to a gray-and-white world, not the Technicolor one we usually associate with the inauguration of time; it is as if color has not yet been conjured forth. On a first screening of the sequence I have just described, we have no idea what kind of a text we are looking at. The opening images resemble one of those Gerhard Richter paintings in which a newspaper photograph has been abstracted to the point of unrecognizability. The subsequent play of light on water does with gray and white what a late Turner painting does with color.2 But these images appear to move, as if they are passing through a film projector. Here, too, we are not on firm ground. The viewer who takes advantage of the freedom James Coleman gives her by turning around to look at the film projector is astonished to see, instead, the usual three slide projectors, one on top of another. If she goes closer to the screen, she is in for an even bigger surprise. The rippling of the water comes to an abrupt halt, and then congeals into the unreadable materiality of a still photograph. The opening images of Photograph are accompanied by the almost liquid sounds of a young girl sighing. -

This owl-of-Minerva-like appreciation of the analogue has prompted photographic art practices that mine the medium for its specificity. Indeed, one could argue that analogue photography has only recently become a medium in the fullest sense of the term, for it is only when artists refuse to switch over to digital photographic technologies that the ques- tion of what constitutes analogue photography as a medium is self- consciously posed. -

Another active year has passed during which we expanded the range of our teaching and research with digital initiatives, inaugurated a prestigious lecture series, expanded our curatorial and object-based teaching and celebrated milestone anniversaries. We were especially delighted to see so many of you at our homecoming anniversary celebrations which started with a panel discussion framed around the theme ART HISTORY MATTERS, followed by a festive lunch hosted by the new Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Steven J. Fluharty. The festivities continued into the afternoon and evening with coffee and dessert in the Jaffe Building where three presentations of current projects were followed by the lively opening of “Itinerant Belongings,” an ambitious multi-venue, multi-media exhibition. The newsletter begins with a summary of more than twenty years of curatorial seminars highlighting our long engagement with objects and their presentation in our curriculum. With the support of generous donors, these courses and projects introduce students both to the study of actual objects and to the Holly Pittman at the Jaffe 20/ process of building and executing compelling interpretive stories.
