University of Lausanne, Switzerland A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in the Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term 2006 ABSTRACT Invasions of exotic species are one of the primary causes of biodiversity loss on our planet (National Research Council 1995). In the marine environment, all habitat types including estuaries, coral reefs, mud flats, and rocky intertidal shorelines have been impacted (e.g. Bertness et al. 2001). Recently, the topic of invasive species has caught the public’s attention. In particular, there is worldwide concern about the aquarium strain of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh that was introduced to the Mediterranean Sea in 1984 from the Monaco Oceanographic Museum. -

This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. FINAL REPORT November 15, 2007 Project Title Improving Understanding of Invasive Seaweeds in California’s Coastal Waters: Moving Beyond Caulerpa taxifolia. Principal Investigator Steven N. Murray Dean, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics California State University, Fullerton 92834-6850 The impetus for this project came from the increasing attention accorded introduced seaweed species in the eastern North Pacific following the California invasions of Caulerpa taxifolia and Undaria pinnatifida around the turn of the century. Much attention was given to Caulerpa taxifolia, primarily because of the notoriety associated with this seaweed resulting from its problematic invasion of the Mediterranean Sea. Its appearance in two southern California inland lagoons resulted in a massive and expensive eradication effort. In contrast, the appearance of Undaria pinnatifida, an invader known to disrupt coastal marine communities in other parts of the world, received much less attention in California and comparable organized and well-financed efforts to totally eradicate this seaweed were not undertaken. Moreover, other introduced or likely introduced seaweeds are known from the region but their introductions have been poorly documented and little is know about their impacts on coastal communities. Some of these seaweeds appear to be very recent introductions while others have occurred in eastern North Pacific waters for many years. This project consisted of two components with the goal of advancing our understanding of seaweed introductions in the eastern North Pacific beyond Caulerpa taxifolia. These included: 1) the organization and convening of a workshop focusing on the identification of research needed to improve understanding of the biology and ecology of invasive seaweeds, and 2) the funding of a small grant program to initiate small research studies on invasive seaweeds. -

Gonor ( 1961) gave in a table all available records of shelled sacoglossan opistho branchs which had ones been described by other researchers from various caulerpan species, when he showed the biology of Lobiger serradifalci (Calcara, 1840) collected from a mat of Caulerpa prolifera in the Harbor of Villefranche in September of 1960. Further, Burn ( 1966) described four species of shelled sacoglossan opisthobranchs, which were found in Octorber of 1964 living on the green alga Caulerpa racemosa, var. turbinata growing on the coral reef near the southeast of Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji. The present author also made an observation on the "caulerpan microfauna" at Cape Shionomisaki in the Province of Kii, Middle Japan in March of 1971 and found fourteen species of opisthobranch gastropods living on Caulerpa brachypus Harvey growing in the lower intertidal zone. -

Etude de l’impact de l’algue envahissante Caulerpa taxifolia sur les peuplements de poissons. Etude approfondie sur une espèce « modèle » : Symphodus ocellatus (Labridae) Nous avons étudié les mécanismes d’impact de l’algue envahissante Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh sur les poissons en Méditerranée, en particulier à l’aide d’une étude approfondie sur une espèce « modèle » : Symphodus ocellatus (Forsskål). Un suivi des peuplements de poissons ainsi que des expérimentations in situ ont été réalisés au niveau du département des Alpes-Maritimes, sur des milieux colonisés par l’algue et des milieux témoins. Caulerpa taxifolia qui forme des prairies de frondes très denses et hautes, de la fin de l’été jusqu’au début de l’hiver, représente une gêne physique pour l’accès à la nourriture benthique et aux microhabitats. Le suivi de deux récifs artificiels crées in situ a montré que l’envasement et l’obstruction de cavités par C. taxifolia diminuent la capacité d’accueil d’un milieu rocheux pour la faune ichtyologique. La raréfaction d’abris convenables mène à une augmentation de la mortalité des petits individus par prédation. L’étude de contenus digestifs ainsi que des acides gras corporels chez S. ocellatus montre un changement de régime alimentaire sur les milieux envahis (augmentation de la consommation de plancton au détriment des proies benthiques). En aquarium, nous avons montré que l’accessibilité aux proies benthiques diminue avec la densification de l’algue. Nous avons observé in situ que C. taxifolia pose également le problème de l’accès et de la détection des proies benthiques pour les rougets de roche Mullus surmuletus. -

Geodiversitas 26 (2) : 207-261. RÉSUMÉ Grateloup (1827, 1832, 1847) a décrit et figuré de nombreuses espèces de Cancellariidae du Miocène des Landes (SW Aquitaine, France). Une révision complète de sa collection de Cancellariidae est présentée ici (environ 80 spé- cimens appartenant à cette famille sont recensés). Les localités de provenance de chaque espèce sont discutées et les répartitions stratigraphiques en sont précisées. Un essai d’attribution générique est proposé et discuté pour chaque taxon. Nous confirmons la validité du genre Gulia Jousseaume, 1887 en complétant sa diagnose et en précisant ses différences avec Ventrilia Jousseaume, 1887. Sur les 32 figures publiées par Grateloup en 1847, trois (peut-être quatre) spécimens figurés n’ont pu être identifiés dans la collection. Au total, un holotype par monotypie a été recensé et nous avons retrouvé 16 spécimens désignés (ici ou précédemment) comme lectotypes de 20 taxons disponibles du niveau espèce ou sous-espèce (e.g., « variétés » ayant rang sub- spécifique), créés par l’auteur ou par des auteurs subséquents ; tous sont fi- gurés ici. -

VERMEIJ2 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2E9 2Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, USA Received 27 June 2016; revised 4 October 2016; accepted for publication 25 October 2016 A recurrent theme in evolution is the repeated, independent origin of broadly adaptive, architecturally and function- ally similar traits and structures. One such is the varix, a shell-sculpture innovation in gastropods. This periodic shell thickening functions mainly to defend the animal against shell crushing and peeling predators. Varices can be highly elaborate, forming broad wings or spines, and are often aligned in synchronous patterns. Here we define the different types of varices, explore their function and morphological variation, document the recent and fossil distri- bution of varicate taxa, and discuss emergent patterns of evolution. We conservatively found 41 separate origins of varices, which were concentrated in the more derived gastropod clades and generally arose since the mid-Mesozoic. Varices are more prevalent among marine, warm, and shallow waters, where predation is intense, on high-spired shells and in clades with collabral ribs. Diversification rates were correlated in a few cases with the presence of varices, especially in the Muricidae and Tonnoidea, but more than half of the origins are represented by three or fewer genera. Varices arose many times in many forms, but generally in a phylogenetically clumped manner (more frequently in particular higher taxa), a pattern common to many adaptations.
