    The Abhidhamma A Practice-Study Daylong on Buddhist Psychology with Jeff Hardin Saturday, July 13, 2013, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Stanislaus County in the Sarana Kuti 2172 Kiernan Ave., Modesto, CA The Abhidhamma is perhaps humanity’s most precise and detailed system for understanding human thought and behavior. Found in the third basket of teachings of the Pali Canon, it describes physical and mental experience in minute detail and on the momentary level. The constituent parts of reality are analyzed and their diverse conditions and interactions are elucidated. More than mere theory, however, the Abhidhamma provides the meditator with a sophisticated yet clear map for dissecting momentary experience and realizing liberating insights into the nature of reality. During this study-practice daylong we will look at the history, theory and practice of the Abhidhamma. Didactic, discussion and guided meditation sessions will be integrated in order to explore the deeper meanings and movements of the mind and to provide a framework for working with Buddhist psychology in one’s own meditation practice and life. Please join us for an interesting and thought-provoking retreat. Jeff Hardin has been practicing meditation since 2000. His areas of interest are participating in residential meditation retreats, studying the original discourses of the Buddha (the Pali suttas), and providing international humanitarian relief work. Bhikkhu Bodhi is an American Theravada Buddhist monk, ordained in Sri Lanka in 1972. He holds a BA degree from Brooklyn College (1966) and a PhD degree from Claremont Graduate School (1972), both in philosophy. A scholar of Buddhism and the Pali language, Ven. Bodhi has translated several major works from the Pali Buddhist Canon, including The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha (Majjhima Nikaya, 1995), The Connected Discourses of the Buddha (Samyutta Nikaya, 2000), and The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha (Anguttara Nikaya, 2012). He is the co-founder and chair of Buddhist Global Relief, a non-proft organization assisting communities su°ering from chronic hunger and malnutrition. Ignorierten wir diese Fakten und verglichen einfach die beiden Idealtypen anhand ihrer jeweiligen kanonischen Darstellungen, kämen wir zur irrigen Annahme, der historische Buddha selbst habe beide Ideale nebeneinander dargelegt und seinen Anhängern im fünften Jahrhundert v.u.Z. die Wahl zwischen beiden gelassen, so als hätte er etwa gesagt: „Dies ist das Arahant-Ideal, welches solche und solche Eigenheiten hat; und dies ist das Bodhisattva-Ideal, welches solche und solche Eigenheiten hat. Caring for the Earth is our shared responsibility. Each one of us has a “moral responsibility to act,” as so powerfully stated by the Pope’s Encyclical and in the climate change statements by Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, and other faith leaders [1]. The planet has already passed safe levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Unless these levels are rapidly reduced, we risk creating irreversible impacts putting hundreds of millions of lives, of all species, at severe risk. The challenges ahead require honesty and courage and we all must take action to reduce emissions. Humanity is at a crucial turning point. We as faith communities recognize that we must begin a transition away from polluting fossil fuels and towards clean renewable energy sources. It is clear that for many people significant lifestyle changes will have to be made. We must strive for alternatives to the culture of consumerism that is so destructive to ourselves and to our planet. The unprecedented consensus resulting in the adoption of the Paris Agreement, welcomed by faith communities the world over, has opened up a new path towards a low-carbon, climate resilient transformation of the global economy.
