There will be flashing lights and explosions and the following text is projected onto the screen and the commentary is heard VOICE December 1999, and as the end of the century approaches and the new millennium beckons, undetected by the general public dark deeds are being plotted to bring civilisation as we know it crashing to oblivion by corrupting all computers with the Millennium Bug. This is the story of the struggle to thwart that catastrophe Song 1 Tragedy – Full Company Here I lie in a lost and lonely part of Down I go and I just can't take it all town alone Held in time in a world of tears I I really should be holding you, slowly drown holding you Goin' home I just can't make it all Loving you, loving you alone I really should be holding you, Tragedy, when the feeling's gone holding you and you can't go on Loving you, loving you It's tragedy, when the morning cries And you don't know why, it's hard Tragedy, when the feeling's gone to bear and you can't go on With no one to love you, you're It's tragedy, when the morning cries going nowhere And you don't know why, it's hard to bear Tragedy, when you lose control With no one to love you, you're and you got no soul going nowhere It's tragedy, when the morning cries And you don't know why, it's hard Tragedy, when you lose control to bear and you got no soul With no one beside you, you're It's tragedy, when the morning cries going nowhere And you don't know why, it's hard to bear Tragedy, when the feeling's gone With no one beside you, you're and you can't go on going nowhere It's tragedy, when the morning cries And you don't know why, it's hard Night and day there's a burning to bear down inside of me, oh, ooh With no one to love you, you're Burning love with a yearning that going nowhere won't let me be Page 3 of 32 Search for the Hero Tragedy, when you lose control And it hurts inside; it's hard to bear and you got no soul With no one beside you, you're It's tragedy, when the morning cries going nowhere Scene – At the end of "Tragedy" all the principal characters remain on stage, in three very distinct and separate groups Firstly the computer group CONTROL Well the idea that the whole World will come to a grinding halt at Midnight on the 31st December is too ridiculous for words… Another scare tactic… Rumour Control, Urban myth, call it what you like… ALT It's another moneymaking scheme. Just like the Industry that’s crept up around Health and Safety… you mark my words, there'll be fortunes made by people offering solutions to this Millennium Bug 'scare', absolute fortunes. DELETE It's not as if they've even identified where the threat's coming from, it's just scaremongering. If you ask me there's nothing in it, you mark my words Then the bugs BUBBLE We've got a busy time ahead of us if we are going to crash the BOY hard drive of this computer before midnight on 31st December, I need you Bugs to be ready at a moments notice, ready to act, set to mobilise… BAZA Yes, we only have a small 'WINDOW' of opportunity and we have to take advantage when it comes up. TEQUILA We'll be ready, it's what we were born for, wreaking destruction and havoc wherever we choose to… Finally the superheroes SUPER The problem with trying to avert this Millennium Bug crisis is we DARIO don't even know where the threat's coming from. We don't know where, when or how, and that leaves us at a massive disadvantage SHE HULK We'll be OK, we have right on our side, and, let's face it, a collection of the best Super Heroes in the business, LEONARDO I think we're being pessimistic. As soon as we know where the threats coming from we will be able to mobilise and conquer… SUPER Maybe, but we don't want to get caught with our tights down, so Page 4 of 32 Search for the Hero DARIO to speak. We need to be vigilant. This is going to be a long, difficult haul Song 2 Millennium – Ensemble We've got stars directing our fate Come and have a go if you think And we're praying its not too late you are hard enough Millennium Come and have a go if you think you are hard enough Some say that we are players Millennium Some say that we are pawns Millennium But we've been making money Since the day that we were born We’ve got stars directing our fate Got to slow down before we fall And we're praying it's not too late down Cause we know we're falling from grace We’ve got stars directing our fate Millennium And we're praying its not too late Cause we know we're falling from And when we come we always grace come to late Millennium I often think that we were born to hate Live for liposuction Get up and see the sarcasm in my And detox for your rent eyes Overdose at Christmas And give it up for lent And when we come we always My friends are all so cynical come to late Refuse to keep the faith I often think that we were born to We all enjoy the madness cause hate we know we're gonna to fade away Get up and see the sarcasm in my eyes We’ve got stars directing our fate And we're praying it's not too late We’ve got stars directing our fate Cause we know we're falling from (Millennium) and we're praying its grace not too late Millennium (Millennium) Cause we know we're falling from grace Millennium Scene – The computer characters join their principals CLIPPY (Sound FX and Graphic) It looks like you have a message. Would you like my help in answering it? CONTROL Click No… We've had an Instruction and it's warning us to be on full alert, there's an 'imminent threat'. We must check our security to make sure we haven't been infected. Our hard drive is at risk ALT But we are fully protected. The policy was paid up and runs to Page 5 of 32 Search for the Hero the end of the year, we have a good firewall, and anti-virus protection… DELETE You can never be too careful, look what happened with that bug we caught last year. We thought we were safe, but it got through the firewall and the protection. It nearly crashed us out all together CLIPPY (Sound FX and Graphic) It looks Like you are writing a letter. Would you like help? ALT No, we do not. Just click 'Don't show me again'. (Turning to Delete) But our firewall's better now, stronger, and more resilient. I'm confident we have nothing to fear CURSOR Still, it wouldn't hurt to have a good check up, make sure all our parts are healthy, and I wouldn't put too much faith in Anti-Virus Protection… MOUSE I'm not sure Control will sanction any extra unnecessary expense, you know how tight money is at the moment DELETE Who asked you, you don't really count Mouse, you're just a bit of software, you won't get infected CLIPPY (Sound FX and Graphic) It looks like you are trying to disconnect your Mouse. Would you like help with this? CONTROL No, we do not. Click 'Don't show me again'. (Turning to Delete) That's a bit harsh Delete, it was cruel and unnecessary. I think you're being very mean. I'm sure Mouse was just trying to help MOUSE That's what happens when your prime function is destructive like Delete, you become bitter and twisted… and anyway, you're all just keys and functions, not Hardware… DELETE Yes, but we drive the hardware, and you can shut up Cursor, you're never going to get infected, you never stop still long enough with all that dashing about you do. CURSOR At least I have the freedom to dash about, I'm not static like you lot. I can even lose myself off-screen, it's a game I play with the human user, I play hide and seek… it can drive them wild trying to find me… CONTROL Will you all just stop arguing, it isn't helping.

Liturgical Responses to a Pandemic Crafting Comfort for Those We Serve Collected by Rabbi Shira Stern, D.Min, BCC [email protected] A.Traditional Liturgy Reframed: 1. Hashkiveinu during the Pandemic by Rav Jeffrey Astrachan This evening, we join with the rest of the world in praying for a quick and positive end to the crisis in which we find ourselves. We pray for those who are sick and dying, and for those tending to their care. We pray for their families, and for those who are most anxious about getting sick. We pray for leaders faced with making difficult choices with lasting consequences. We pray for students whose hopes for celebrating their accomplishments have been thwarted. We pray for all those in the work-force who have been – and who will be – directly impacted by the need for social-distancing. Tonight, I offer a prayer that comes to us from our liturgy, which we call “Hashkiveinu.” It is a nighttime prayer that asks God for protection and blessing. It seems fitting to offer these words tonight: Grant, O God, that we lie down in peace, and raise us up, our Guardian, to life renewed. Spread over us the shelter of Your peace. Guide us with Your good counsel; for Your Name’s sake, be our help. Shield and shelter us beneath the shadow of Your wings. Defend us against enemies, illness, war, famine and sorrow. Distance us from wrongdoing. For You, God, watch over us and deliver us. For You, God, are gracious and merciful. Guard our going and coming, to life and to peace evermore.

Yet we know little about the role that heroes play in the lives of adolescents – a period of human development when challenges are plentiful, and adolescents are increasingly open to the influence of others outside the family unit.

Houria Bouteldja’s bold and critical challenge to all of us—especially those who claim to be leftists or progressives—builds on the rich legacies of Malcolm X, Jean Genet, Aimé Césaire, Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, Frantz Fanon, and Chela Sandoval. This challenge consists of a powerful intellectual case against imperial innocence and a poignant cry of the heart for an indigenous revolutionary politics—a politics that is unapologetically anti-patriarchal, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist grounded in the doings and sufferings of colonized peoples.

Hello all — We have listeners all over, and some of them will be heading into the winter months, but where I am spring has finally shook off the claws of winter. But in the slice of science fiction fandom we all inhabit, spring is really notable for the return of Doctor Who to the airwaves, and thankfully for US fans, it is far closer to simultaneous transmission now that it has been the last few seasons. Physical distance matters less and less for communication, which in prac- tice means that it is incredibly annoying to be in the US and looking at a twitter stream full of UK tweets about what the Doctor’s been on about that week. Spoilers suck (sweetie). And speaking of the UK, we were very lucky and happy to run an interview with Lauren Beukes, who won this year’s Arthur C. Clarke award for her novel Zoo City.

  • THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.
